I know for myself, when my ps3 friends ask me about this game when they see me playing it from time to time, I just tell them it's my guilty pleasure. I tell them though no one should start playing this game, there is no real reason to play a game like this "now", when it started sure, but at this point, it's a sinking ship with no land in sight. This new update isn't going to do anything but give the vets some new things to play with for a bit, hell that's why I'm playing again for now, but the newbies will still be getting thrown into the pit with a rusty spoon and told to "HTFU".
Edit: After all games are meant to be fun. Inb4 flaying their genitals by dying over and over to proto stomps = fun
Double-Edit: Also, Inb4 but Eve is like this game. Really? Where's the ******* PVE? Because, PVE would give newbies something to do between wincing from the proto-stomps. Where's our High-Sec? How is this game anything like Eve? Because it shares lore? Woooooooooo!!! |

I would agree the NPE parallels to EvE are a bit of a stretch as the games are operating under completely separate business models.
Only a few percent of FTP players are going to spend money and as players gain SP, they have less use for boosters and the like meaning sales to existing players could stagnate. In my opinion, BPO's were the best monetized option that CCP has offered and they are on their way out. I don't even look at the new packs as I have enough SP to skill into at least the STD level of the suits and weapons I'm interested in.
A successful FTP game needs a large, renewing player base. EvE has true PVE to ease players into the game and the subscription model to make a smaller player base viable. DUST has neither of these.
A stagnant userbase with no need for consumable microtransactions is the quickest way to kill DUST. Everyone should support a better NPE to attract new players. I am really struggling to think of how a bigger userbase would be a negative for any vet.

I know every time I get invited to try a FTP game, I always make a point to do a day or two of youtube research before I download the game and give it a try. Doesn't everybody? (/sarcasm)
Seriously, though I understand your point which I think is you get out of DUST what you put into it and that's a valid point.
However, no one is saying new players should be able to spawn into a PC match without putting in the time, but should new players be kicked straight into tankbush/protostomp 514?
How does a better NPE hurt anyone?

From what I can tell, it's because CCP itself on numerous occasions, even so far as making a ******** music video, has supported the screw the new guy attitude. Yes it's childish but the fans will mimic the attitude of the developers.
That and of the hundred or so people I've spoken to over comms since I started playing this only 5 of them could I say are mature adults. Plenty of adults, but many are your stoner gangster wannabes or the classic fps nerd where he has to one up everyone in conversation and act like a complete tool.
Edit: I guess what I'm trying to say is the community being awful doesn't help the NPE either, hence Sebiestor Field Sappers fo life fo shizzle..... |

there's absolutely no way i can talk someone into downloading this and then feel good about myself.. 3-5 fatal errors a night, every match is totally lagging, tank spam, etc. no normal person would put up with this sht. the lag and hardfreezing and fat erroring has reached an unacceptable level and they're just like ignoring the issue. the lag is effecting my whole squad so it cant be just my connection. the server just stops, everyone freezes running in place.. then it starts up again in between all that is the normal lag. this game retrded as F.

He had been doing youtube research for the last few days too lol and I tossed him a M isk just to cover intro costs which helped. also managed to drop a dude and steal his tank on his 4th match ever which was definitely the highlight of the day.
We're squading up again this afternoon so this is actually a success story but just further illustrates the abysmal NPE

I barely remember the Academy on this character. All I remember is seeing a DS for the first time and wanting it so badly (sadly I don't really fly any more - lack of content)
On my mid alt I went in and breezed through with the frontline. Was a good fight actually
Then on my heavy alt I went in with militia Heavy + basic HMG and their tiny little minds couldn't handle it.
Instantly passed through and never even got to the objective (I was literally the only blue there on the point. The others were, no lie, killing themselves in the redline or riding burning LAV's about to explode - sad part was no enemies even touched them and they were fully loaded 3 at a time)
...indeed... wow

For the record you are absolutely correct on the extra 1 mil. A family member started a new account so I sent them a mil to help buy skillbooks. I suggested they go Logi since I knew they had a better chance of survival if they weren't on the frontline. I was shocked that if I had not done that if probably would have taken 5+ matches to unlock even the std minmatar suit. That means 5 matches of getting absolutely wrecked in militia if you were lucky enough to get a kill at all.
If you stick it out for 5-10 matches and have someone who knows where to put your SP it gets better, but I really believe many players wouldn't even know there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
Increase the new account base funds by 1 mil and reduce ISK and SP requirements to skill into STD level equipment.
Neither of those suggestions hurts vets at all unless you're scared of noobs in a STD suit.

Correct, but perhaps not how you meant.
DUST will either adapt to the fact it is operating under a FTP microtransaction model or it will die.
CCP is a business and if DUST can't make money they will have to make a decision on whether to continue development at a loss.
I hope the last message on the "News" screen when CCP runs out of money and has to shut down the servers is either "HTFU" or "Welcome to New Eden".
The irony would be epic.

HTFU.
This is pretty much what happened for me when I joined during Codex. I was playing on a "small" screened (by today's standards) standard definition TV and couldn't read ANYTHING. It wasn't till I started playing on a computer screen in HD that I knew what the squad/corp/etc tabs even said. With that said, the current NPE is garbage. The Academy was a step in the right direction and then they all the sudden said "Hey this feature is working too well, lets sodomize it like we do everything else."
Stuff....?

I love the "HTFU, when I started... blah blah blah", like somehow "this game used to be ****" is a reason to leave it that way, or "adapt or die" funny how this is used most often by people arguing against the game changing. (ya know... evolving)
Anyway if people are so opposed to logical improvement in a game how about you back to playing MAG... oh wait... so THAT'S what happens when the playerbase stagnates...
