Going off of the information released so far, it seems all of the Suits are kind of being pushed into a "this is what you are supposed to do."
Sentinel: Defense, lots of EHP. Logistics: Support, specific bonus to racial equipment. Scout: Sneaky, meant to be hard to find or find people. Commando: Damage, bonus to light weapon damage while having high HP. Assault: I am really not sure; they just seem to be getting a bonus to fitting weapons and be better with a particular weapon.
They don't do more damage than the Commando and don't have more HP so I am trying to see where their niche is. Even ignoring the fact that Logistics get more slots and therefore more HP than Assaults, what are Assaults supposed to do as a role in 1.8 compared to the other suits?

Assaults are also for damage (for instance Amarr assault reduced heat build up means you're able to dish out damage for longer). Where it differs from the Commando is that the Assault is better at flanking and such.
Mail me in game if interested in learning about the Amarr Empire and serving them in Faction Warfare.

Logi suits have more CPU/pg and slots.
Assaults are just a little bit faster but thats negligible for am extra slots. |

The hinted at reason is assault suits are for Slayers to use. They really hate Logis getting kills as do many of the QQ Kittens on the forums.
All the designs in Dust5t4 for assault suits so far have been ... mediocre at best. Almost any Logi was better than the same racial assault suit. The only problem was the loss of the small arm slot. With the incredibly short TTK of 1.7 not that many Mercs get a chance to switch so ... without the small arms slot at least the suit is cheaper.
In my biased opinion there hasn't been a good assault since they delivered the Nerf Hammer of Doom on the Caldari in 1.5 or so. That doesn't look like it is going to change.
I would expect if Logis are still Slayers in 1.8 then an even bigger Logi Nerf Hammers will be raining down from Shanghai. Thus making Assault suits good slayers because everything else will be worse.
And so it goes.

my bad it's actually high slots for the Kinetic Catalyzer, but I agree that people will have to work out what they want more or a way to balance it so they have pretty good speed for a heavy and HP(sh,arm)

Amarr Assault helps out their niche weapons. The others... Not as much.
The Gallente is awesome if you're using AR. Anything else and it's useless.
Caldari Assault has a reload bonus. Woopty doo. I mean, it's KIND OF useful for every weapon, but it doesn't negate their own weapons' weaknesses like the Amarr do.
Minmatar assault has greater clips. I can see how this is useful for their weapons so I'll place this as useful.
In conclusion, the useful assaults will be Amarr and Minmatar. Gallente and Caldari need to be rethought out. Their bonuses are supposed to make their racial weapons OP. |

Slayer logis look good on paper but in the field they generally either move really slowly due to stacked plates, or are really squishy because they need so many plates to be comparable to an assault.
And then looking at the new proposed assault bonus (x% reduction in fitting costs) that frees up enough cpu/pg for the assault to wield better weaponry while not sacrificing any tank.
And the funny thing about the forums is just how much they undervalue sidearms. In any real combat situation I find a good sidearm invaluable. The Assault being able to break out an SMG or ScP instead of reloading has been the downfall of many slayer logis.
Sidearms are also seemingly getting buffed in 1.8, so the commando's advantage of having two light slots seems just a little less impressive.
So back to the OP, the point of the assault is to be the generalist frontline fighter. It's able to have both decent damage output and eHP without having any major downsides.
I do suppose the comparison between the commando and the assault should get fleshed out a little better.
Sure the commando has a higher natural hitpoint pool. But higher HP does not mean better HP. The shield stats are appalling and the limited slot count means that one has to decide between higher HP or HP regen. High base HP means jack-all if you have no way of restoring it.
A high base hp with slow regen might be a good choice for the first few seconds of the first encounter with an enemy, but after that initial advantage is burned away you'll be screwed. Commando suits seem better suited for long range AV or area denial. They don't seem suited for actual combat due to the fact that they have terrible regen and no grenade slot.

Damage Application with racial weapons.
Amarr: Lower heat buildup allows for higher damage application
Caldari: Faster reloads allows for higher damage application
Gallente: Less dispersion allows for higher damage application
Minmatar: Larger magazines allow for higher damage application.

The assault suit is the general slayer. Main pushers. Scouts can't directly push an objective because they don't have enough hp. Heavies can't because they are too slow. Same with commandos. Logis can but assaults are the best at.. Assaulting objectives lol

My opinion, not CCP, but the Commando is the best DPS machine with a flexibility for weapons but inflexibility for everything else. It's still a modified heavy, it's less mobile than the assault and will suck if you don't fit it for strictly high-offense. Assaults are more versatile but because of their versatility they can't specialize in damage.
Slayers should consider the Commando specialization. We should actually be happy that we get to choose specializations. There will be more. Pilot suits, Marksman suits, Crusader/Tactician suits, etc. One day we'll have plenty of options that seem better than are core classes but will have their disadvantages along with their advantages.
Don't forget that the Commando will cost more and CCP is planning for them to have a multitude of skills to make them worth using a lot.

Be well.
Assault is about mobile DPS. IT always has been in EVE with assault ships, always will be.

Right but they get bonuses that specifically help them deal damage, usually in the optimal range department. In 1.8, the Assaults Suit will not have such a bonus that makes it good at "assaulting." |

For that to be true you'd have to nerf weapon damage by 25% and give each suit a damage buff for their racial weapon per level to bring it back up to where it currently is. |

The laser is not useless. It takes practice and range dictation but it isn't useless. If I was a better shot I would be very dangerous with a LR. I use the ELM all the time and it is almost perfect, it may be OP if the optimal is too wide or it is too good at a shorter range.

To me the assault suit is rapid deployment and high weapon diversity. I run the Min Assault so its different to other suits but: I can engage an enemy, pull back, recover fast and engage again. Have the mobility to respond to threats Carry weapons the compliment each other, either covering weapon shortfalls or different damage types to take down enemies faster.
For me if I want to defend a static point I'd prefer the Logi suits durability. If I'm going on the offensive or defending between points I prefer to the Assault suit as it can react better. Plus some weapons simply need a good sidearm -LR, MD ect

Be well. I know for a fact gallente assaults are just big scouts. Once you veiw them that way its a whole new ball game.
Armor tanking a gal assault is inefficient. Thats what logis are for.
On my proto I can run 6.93 speed, have 650 ehp with a proto weapon/1x dmg mod and be almost unscannable with a quantum scanner.
This game has a strange design curve that leans towards stealth later on that you never see coming that is insanely interesting.
It is so good to be gallente right now........unless you like assault rifles. The you are fkd because only the duvolle is competitive right now.

Be well. Have you seen the new bonuses? Assaults will be better. To answer your question they are made to kill other people. These suits have defining characteristics, they are not in the slot load out, or the bonuses exclusively. Its in things like sprint speed, shield regen, stamina, stamina, regen, when compared to logis these suits are great for frontline fighting, particularly when it comes to flanking. Many people believe the logi is currently the superior engagement medium suit, this is of course not true. The assault suit is simply a slayer. The logi can slay and carry equipment but the superior ability of the assault suit is clear once you have proto out both..... |

Be well. Baby Commandos.
With the upcoming 1.8, Assaults will have a sidearm as well as roughly equal EHP (as logi's will then finally have to fit a self repper), being faster then logi's and heavies, and with a smaller htibox as opposed to Commandos or Heavies.
I think 1.8 will neatly entail the roles that each class should be doing, and then subdividing the smaller bits within the races (logi's for example, every racial logi will specialize in a specific Equipment, or heavies look like they specialize in different tanking/combat styles, minnies being Hit and run, Gallente for Logiless Assault, Caldari for Shield Combat overal, and Amarr for Logi Supported Defense). One thing that has me thinking however,is that the subsects that the other classes divided themselves among seem to be missing in the Assaults. They all seem to be about straight up fighting, with no real difference among the races. The only thing that differs among the races is the Tanking style, nothing else about the assaults are diversified.
Which can be seen as a blessing, and as a curse. Its so simple so that if you accidently skill into a race you don't really like, the differences are marginal between the races of the assaults that it won't really affect you, but also it leaves the class devoid of items that perform better in said role the another race.

Why?
The only differences between the assault suits is the tanking style, the small bonuses to the suits to the racial weapons, and equally small base stat differences (minnies are .5 meters faster! ohhhhhhh) Assault suits are very similar.

Logistics, Sentinel, Scout, and Commando are getting defined into roles while Assault really isn't. Saying that an Assault is a Baby Commando is kind of backwards. Imagine a scenario where I have a two landlines. One landline is defined into a smartphone; would you consider the landline a baby smartphone or that the smartphone actually has direction and purpose? Don't get me wrong, the landline does have some advantages; longer battery life, cheaper, it is easier for grandma to understand but it doesn't mean that the landline has a fit purpose like the smartphone does.
The thread really wasn't about how Logistics are better Assaults but my one line did push it that way. Saying that losing their innate 5 hp/s makes them have to have a self-repairer thereby making the health closer is a little off. The Assault has to have a self-repairer to by that logic and the Logistics still have more slots. Plus, the Logistics could just carry a bunch of triage hives. But again, I don't mean for it to be about Logistics > Assault. Logistics actually has a defined role, helping people through equipment whereas the Assault doesn't seem to have any CCP defined role.
People can say they are 'better at assaulting' but that is just in the name of the character. They don't have bonuses where you would go "boy howdy this will be good for assaulting."
Gallente hip-fire will be tighter, Minmatar and Amarr will be able to shoot for greater times, and Caldari will be able to reload faster. This doesn't have direction. The Commando is clear; more damage with racial weapons. Logistics is clear; more efficient with racial equipment. The Scout, while not as blatant as the other two, is clear; Gallente will not be found, Caldari will have a superior radar system, the Minmatar will be the Minjas again, and the Amarr will not be used (seriously, change the bonus) or at least be able to be able to run longer by a couple seconds. The Scout bonuses help at being sneaky. Flip objectives, be invisible to active scanners, have godly passive scanners, again the Amarr one needs to change to be in line with sneaky.
With the Assault, you could say that they are better at prolonged engagements because of being able to shoot more but the Gallente and Caldari one don't help in that regard. You could say they are better at close range fighting, but the Caldari, Amarr, and Minmatar one don't help in that regard.
Simply put, ending this wall, when you look at the Logistics, Commando, Sentinel, and Scout bonuses you can immediately tell the theme that the Scout itself and the Racial Scout is going for. For me, I can't do that with Assaults.

Be well.
This time i am going for the suit with the most slots, as sadly thats the best suit to use or adapt to various playstyles, i am done with having only 6 slots while other suits got 7-9 to play with.
Every fit i could do on my Amarr suit was 1.5 times better on the 9 slot suit, though i only had it at level 3 to just test out the suit and not run it 24/7 as i figured, hey CCP will fix those FOTM suits anyyy second now ...(fast forward 8 months ...annyyy second...oh ....they didnt ....
The stuff assaults are getting as part of the rebalance really has to be in the slot layouts, otherwise i dont get it, is there even any info about their slot layouts floating on the forum that ive missed? Because the new bonusses are just the old bonusses from a couple of patches ago.
ps: i am gonna be very afraid from a Heavy suit with a light weapon in 1.8, yer just not gonna be dropping one before you run out of EHP, especially using the Scrambler Rifle and the nerf to the damage components and resists on the heavy suits, while the Assault will still be quite the same.

That's right, gentlemen, the primary reason everyone uses Logistic suits for killing is NOT being changed.
Which is just kind of silly. Agreed.
