You're literally going to go down in history as the laughing stock that players a decade from now will say, "Boy, does that guy feel stupid."
Listen bro, I used to be like you (hell, I still joke about this very thing) but what you have to understand is that CCP Shanghai made the same exact mistakes that CCP Iceland made.. Over-hyping concepts and designs that were not even close to being finished, unrealistic and half-thought. They, like all human beings, learn from their experiences and I can almost guarantee that they won't make that mistake this year (I've even got permission from the CPM to virtually choke a ***** if they do).
Holding onto past experiences should be done for the lulz. It should be the sarcastic running joke that's meant to semi-politely jab at the guys at CCP in a way similar to, "Hey, remember when we did -THAT-? Remember when we made that terrible decision? Boy were we young!" but it should never be used as a grudge, lest you not only make yourself look like the world's biggest, most self-entitled douche (I mean, really, who are you to tell them how to run THEIR game?) but it also serves to accomplish nothing but demoralize the developers who, just like you, are trying their best.
Now, take a step back and think about how this is going to go over.

Props to the OP if he actually does get to ask his question to completion and without getting escorted out of the building.
In all honesty,I do feel like these are some questions that absolutely need to be asked, but unfortunately if you do get an answer, all it will be is more rhetoric and guarded vague answers.

I was there back on 2008 when many players believed that Eve Online is going to die by the end of that year. I still run into players who say the same thing this year.
OP, I understand that this is a valid question and it deserves to be asked. But if you go ahead and ask that question in the most douche-like manner possible, you will more than likely accomplish only one thing...

Right, it couldn't hurt to ask what happened and what the implications were which they'll most certainly reply that the game was riddled with bugs and the reviews generally were mixed, saying the game -felt- lifeless. Asking these sort of things in a non-douche way can certainly be healthy, if done correctly. I don't really see a problem with asking what the specifications were, hell I'd honestly like to know myself =D

To extend on your argument, I'd like to add on this:
If anyone went and looked at CCPGames.com and looked at all the positions they're hiring for the Shanghai division, they'd know that CCP is doing everything in their power to turn things around and speed up the development process. I think everyone needs to understand that these guys have (up until the recent holidays) been burning through -monthly- point releases; that's no easy task and I'm sure all of the developers have felt the grind from that.
Then of course there are members of the community that chastize them for having extended holidays... With that kind of acid-spewing, you can't immediately wonder why CCP is more often silent then not xD

You guys realize that when CCP created eve online they were basically a start up, right?
Bringing up the long ass evolution of eve has no bearings whatsoever on the development of Dust. With Dust they have ten years of experience, deep pockets, an ability to attract real talent. Those strengths didn't exist when they started out with Eve.
It is a straw man's argument devoid of logic to compare the development of Eve to Dust as if Dust should go the same route. From a business standpoint, it is utter failure to take ten years to develop a successful product, especially when you already went through that struggle. It implies that nothing was learned and Eve was a fluke they probably can't replicate. It also means they are going to lose a lot of money for apparently no reason at all.
sorry- It's just maddening to hear people compare the two. Past success doesn't insure future success.

Other than the fact that they have ten years of experience... with Eve. Deep pockets that went to a TV series, comic book series, FPS, White-Wolf merger, World of Darkness and EVE: Valkyrie - the ability to attract real talent is negotiable as well, CCP is pretty independent. They're not backed by EA/Ubisoft, afterall.

Technically CCP has absolutely NO fps experience. Their only experience is in the mmo and card game market as well as making awesome trailers. That's it.

Dude, from a business standpoint I could pick your little list into pieces. I get that you are a fan. I am too.
As a business person, casting a cold hard eye on this, my point stands perfectly. You aren't making any points to buff your standpoint, but in fact, pointing out why I am right. Let's do this exercise, try to separate your entertainment perspective from the whole situation, and pretend you have your whole fortune invested in Dust.
Now think about it for awhile, and tell me why I have a point. Just for fun.

I know there appears to have been a little lull in content over the past month or two but this is generally attributed to extended breaks for the holidays and I promise that a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes - arguably more than ever. :)
There'll be more updates to come in the nearish future, as well as some Dev Blogs for you guys to sink your teeth in to.
That's really good to hear. Can you please look into moving the scout registry back into general form the locker room? A lot of us players that specialize in the scout role have a lot of information in there, and we help out new scout players all the time. We'd clean it up so it was more approachable as well.
As an aside, I'm really happy you are on board. I am not familiar with CCP Rouge, but I've had more confidence in Dust's future since you've showed up. After the past year, I'm looking forward to you guys kicking some ass.

Do you have better ideas on what you promised us last year that you could not deliver, Is that why it is taking you so long??? How come you could you not deliver anything you promised but two new racial Assault Rifles, and a patch completely untested by your community, delivery date of said patch TBA, with the introduction of a full set of changes and the "Other Half" of the Racial Suits.... What can you tell us "This Year" that will keep a player base that has fallen off because of a severe lack of "New Player Experience" and a lack of delivery? I'm going to read you some quotes about Eve Online in the Eve Online: Into the Second Decade collector's edition book, maybe help you reflect on how stupid this goal of yours is going to be. "CCP talk of expansion packs and add-ons but if they can't even introduce many features that were promised from release do we think we will ever see such a thing as a first-person option in the future, despite the fact the developers once said in a CSM that this was on the agenda?" ~ Barnett
"The game'll be dead in six months. Mark my words." ~ Elan Dochin You're literally going to go down in history as the laughing stock that players a decade from now will say, "Boy, does that guy feel stupid." Listen bro, I used to be like you (hell, I still joke about this very thing) but what you have to understand is that CCP Shanghai made the same exact mistakes that CCP Iceland made..
Run for CPM1...please!

mollerz wrote:You guys realize that when CCP created eve online they were basically a start up, right?
From a business standpoint: If youre frogking strategic goal is to make a well rounded, attractive, popular MMO ruled by balance and to fix problems as they arise, time is irrelevant. They've planned for this 'game' (EVE) to continue on near indefinitely at this point.
DUST taking the slow road proves that they've learned far more than what they lead on from EVE, and its going to take time to replicate, due to a whole host of problems (staffing issues, inter-company communications, language/time barriers, and absolutely abhorrent/impatient community)
Protip: If DUST wasn't sustainable, would they still be working on it at this point? (Business standpoint says no)
All said and done, DUST will become something the lot of us can be proud to say we actually 'played'

I still dont understand why the game is being made in china. More talent in europe/America. Game should be made in-house along side maintaining and expanding eve. How can you build a game thats supposed to exist within another game on the other side of the world.

Cuz if you're from a real news agency then CCP MIGHT have a prepared line of crap to feed you.
Folks, I concur that asking this kind of serious question of CCP could increase the bad press and community 'cohesiveness' but wtf are we supposed to do when this company makes a business out of poor communication |

Lol at learning mandarin Chinese. While I can understand the point around it being "difficult" to relocate talent from overseas (I myself was expatriated from the UK!), I have to disagree with you on the whole. There are incredibly talented people both at CCP Shanghai and in China as a whole.
Online computer and mobile gaming has taken Asia by storm. Having traveled around China and Korea it has been mind-boggling to observe people of all ages glued to games. I visited 5 PC Bangs (net cafes) on my recent trip to Seoul, because I'm a nerd like that. :)
Finally, DUST 514 isn't meant to exist "within" EVE Online, but more in the EVE Universe - important distinction. :) We work closely with our buddies in Reykjavik.
Edit: Mandarin Chinese is hard. I'm taking regular lessons and still suck pretty bad. But it also hasn't hampered my ability to communicate with anybody at CCP Shanghai and, as I mentioned on another thread, a lack of fluency shouldn't deter to anyone looking to apply for a role at the studio!

what do you think they're doing? do you honestly believe that they take any joy in failing to deliver? you say they're are developing "slowly", but if they could do it any faster do you think they would? making a game is like construction work it can only happen so quickly and there is a point where nothing will speed it up. I think people often forget that this is a JOB it's WORK you work 9-5 and go home. if you're running behind schedule you pull overtime but even then you can only do so much. sometimes **** happens.
"There's only one rule that I know of, babiesGÇöGod damn it, you've got to be kind." ~ Vonnegut Heheh. If they can't deliever any faster, why lie to the consumers, knowing all the while you can't deliever - false advertisement. I assume it's fine with you though. no, it's not okay with me. certainly if they know they can't deliver. but honestly I trust ccp, perhaps it's a flaw of character, but I like to think that they aren't intentionally deceiving the customer. it's a judgement call that each of us has to make, can ccp deliver the product? if you say "no" why are you still here? our building is a little behind schedule, is it too far behind to be worth it? that's a question I can't answer for you. To extend on your argument, I'd like to add on this: If anyone went and looked at CCPGames.com and looked at all the positions they're hiring for the Shanghai division, they'd know that CCP is doing everything in their power to turn things around and speed up the development process. I think everyone needs to understand that these guys have (up until the recent holidays) been burning through -monthly- point releases; that's no easy task and I'm sure all of the developers have felt the grind from that. Then of course there are members of the community that chastize them for having extended holidays... With that kind of acid-spewing, you can't immediately wonder why CCP is more often silent then not xD I'd like to chime in and say that Aeon's spot on here...we're recruiting for numerous positions in Shanghai and we're committed to making this game as amazing as possible.
