Yes, this is all generalisation, and yes, of course squads will need to adapt to the situation at hand and the preferences of the squad leader and members.
But what would a good default infantry squad composition be?
Here's a straw-man to kick things off...
1. Anchor - HMG Heavy or similar tanky DPS machine 2. Logi support, running behind and to the side of the anchor, with a rep tool, injector & hives 3. Left flank, generally assault, running ahead and to the left of the anchor 4. Right flank, also generally assault, running ahead and to the right of the anchor 5. Scout, running well ahead of the anchor 6. Squad support, running behind the anchor with a stand-off weapon such as mass driver
The anchor would advance straight up the middle, looking fierce and trying to hold the attention of the enemy, with the logi supporting him. While the enemy is focussed on the anchor, the assaults open fire from both flanks to do the bulk of the killing, with the scout engaging them from behind and the squad support lobbing MD rounds into them as well.

We often talk about this sort of stuff in corp, usually around the fabled PvE. Most (if not all) RPG MMO's require a balanced squad composition, but since dust allows people to do anything with their suits you end up with all sorts in the squad. Sure, PvE is different to PvP, but the squad setup shouldn't be too different to what you describe.

It's TF2 comp slang.
crowd control handles choke points and area denial.
Pocket = medic + whoever's charged with defending him. The pocket always gets the blue donut.
Roamer = offensive muscle, backup pocket, suicidal picker. Occasionally even uses shotguns.
Utilities = flankers, hackers, uplinks, scanners, cleanup crew for wounded targets etc.

This is interesting.
Does anyone assign a squad member to defend their logi in Dust?
Or are Dust logis more self-sufficient than TF medics?

A single squad can't truly be all purpose without switching fits... but...
Heavy for Crowd Control and soaking damage and attention; Offensive Logi with that duo rep thing for Survivability + Nanos; Defensive Assault (Slayer) for Infantry Offense/Defending logi and weaker offensive units; Defensive+Offensive Assault AV (AV Grenades + Rifle) for some AV plus Anti-Infantry; Defensive Assault dedicated AV (Swarm+AV nades); Defensive Scout Combat Sniper; moving up and sniping. Scouting AND sniping - mid-range sniping. Main purpose being suppressive fire and spotting enemy snipers. Mostly Offensive.

My ideal squad composition would be this:
Very fast Scout with Nova Knifes and biotic modules to be a ninja An extremely well dampened Scout to be the most annoying ******* ever by sneaking behind enemies and shooting them in the back A range and precision enhancer stacked Scout meant to show every single person on the map An offensive Scout with codebreakers to hack all the things A sniper Scout to countersnipe other snipers and suppress everyone on the battlefield And a Scout with a repair tool to keep the other scouts alive.
Is this viable? Probably not. Is it going to be the most annoying squad composition in existence? Most likely. Is it going to be a ton of fun? Heck yes.

Gallente Assault tanked out with damage mods and scanner + Minmatar Logi with core focused reps
Trust me, it works.
Maybe throw in a scout or assault with an injector to distract or for backup, a forge gunner/HMG to sit on objectives and to deal with tanks, and possibly another logi for uplink placement and to keep the heavy alive.

It would be cool to be able to say to your (initially general purpose) squad something like "OK, we're getting pummelled by those queue-syncinc proto scum, so lets switch to lolcsout composition" though.

Yeah, given the current state of tanks I suspect more emphasis on AV is quite important. This isn't so far from my strawman composition though, with the dedicated AV acting in the team support role instead of using a mass driver. Hmmm... plasma cannon?

the only squad that murders me is 5 proto assaults and 1 logi.
they tend to fight smart, use cover and flank, and you can't hope to match the fire power of 4-5 assaults, even if you bring 2 down the other 3 will get you and the logi will just pick them up.
if you are lucky you can take one or two out with explosives but ya if they are good they won't fall for that.

It would be a basic Marine fire team only with six instead of four ppl.
Point man/scout Heavy machine gunner Squad leader with rifle or MD Rear guard (flanker)
The two extra could be rear guard and extra point man.
You rotate around the point man or the leader depending. Stay in a loose or tight staggered column while moving.

1.8 is going make scout squads OP completely balanced and viable.
