So this morning I was running a squad with some friends but we weren't quite full so I threw it in Squad Finder. A few seconds later the squad fills up and we're chatting when I suddenly hear this clearly prepubescent voice in my ear.
This young new merc promptly asked something along the lines of "when I log off, why am I not in a CRU anymore?" My immediate gut reaction was "OH GOD KICK HIM HE'S BRAND SPANKING NEW!" For some reason though, this catgirl had a shred of warmth in her heart and decided to help mentor this poor young fellow.
We played a few rounds of skirmish and he struggled (no surprise there), but then came the statement that was just an icepick to the heart for we vets - "I'm just going to snipe from now on, it's the only way I can get kills."
OUCH.
In the match the disparity between veteran and newberry became VERY obvious. Newberry said he felt as if her couldn't even get a shot off before he was dead. He complained on how other players could "eat" his bullets but for some reason their rounds were doing far more damage to him. This poor newberry was running around in starter militia medic suit going against Ishukone RR's and Boundless CR's - HE HAD NO CHANCE. This is someone who didn't even know the names of the game modes being put in a match against Hellstorm, Nyain, Molon Labe, etc...needless to say he was a bit dejected.
This newberry told us he has only been playing the game for about a day now. When asked how he heard of DUST he replied that he saw it in the PSN store and it looked "cool." He then informed us that he just kind of had to figure things out on his own. He figured out how to hack on his own and that defending the objectives were important. He had very little knowledge of the names of installations or equipment. He somewhat knew CRU's but he called the MCC a "big spaceship thingy" and didn't know what supply depots were.
The guy had spunk though, when asked if he would stick around or quit playing he said he'd stick around. I warned him though that if he thought today was bad, eventually he'll face super corps that will stomp him so hard he'll have to check his RL nuts for bruising. After a few more rounds of him getting his ass handed to him (even though we won some matches), he went off to play BLOPS.
I'm telling you, I've read and heard the stories of how horrendous it is for new players coming into DUST but I have never had a run in experience with it. CCP you have REALLY got to do something. He stated that a tutorial he feels would have helped. You have countless newberries like this running around not knowing what's going on that will get dejected and leave the game. If people have a bad new experience, negativity will spread by word of mouth and this game will never grow.
Something needs to be done.

I am glad you have seen the truth. Ever since 1.7 hit, iv only incountered one noob, I was going to help him out, but I got punched in the face by a fatal error. I never saw him again. In fact, I havent seen any new players from my contacts list since 1.7.
I can't help notice that most protos I run into are AUR variants, I find this vary ironic. If the stomping keeps going as it is then there won't be a growing player base, the dust server will no longer have the funds to stay up, thous shut down, and all money anyone has spent on this game will waisted.
I'd say walk in my shoes for a day, but you probably still won't understand.

I was in that squad and was about to make the same exact thread.
Back when we all started playing the game, the learning curve was much less than it is now. But to hear a kid maybe thirteen years old say, "enough of this I'm going sniping", eye opener to why you end up with all the blues in the backfield doing nothing.
It's not a matter of him not wanting to play the game, he wants to play with people on his skill level. There needs to be better training and tutorials, and there needs to be gear and or SP regulated game modes, when someone says they would rather play crap ops, that's an eye opener.

There is a player out there named Eirik Yassavi. No, he is not an alt of mine, he is a brand new player I've been playing with. He started out very frustrated, but after just a few days he got up to using basic advanced heavy frames with the MH-82 and is having a good time.
There's definitely problems with the NPE, but as far as new players not being able to do anything in public matches that to me is more of an issue of PC players wanting to play highly competitive in their best gear but having no place to do so at (PC is effectively shutdown with district locking, FW is a one-sided joke with poor payouts).

Welcome to logiRR514. Tell him he just needs to play for about 2-6 months, and invest that time in putting points into things he likes, only to watch them get nerfed into the floorboards right when he finally uses it.
don't worry though, about 2 months after that, they'll make it gloriously OP and everyone and their grandmother will be abusing it to high heaven and you'll feel disgusting when you use it because of how it became FOTM.
Just tell him to spec into gal logi and rail rifles. they're IN and CCP will probably go back to making them the best slayer suits in the game by the time he specs into them.
Gotta love the matchmaking in this game. "you've played a couple rounds with people who can't tell the difference between the trigger of their gun and their own ass, so now you're ready to fight the top end players with over a year's worth of a headstart, who ONLY use what's OP while it's OP."
If you hear the words "WORTH IT!" look about, something hilarious just happened.

There is really next to nothing explained in this game. I have been playing since August 2012 and I didn't learn the game until around Dec, I was actually about to delete it from my HD when I met a guy in a public match through voice chat and he took me under his wing. (Adam Average thanks again!!) We have to consider a few things:
1. Fps players as a whole are not patient
This applies to many things, including glitches, lopsided matching, poor gameplay, hard to understand mechanics and scaling, etc.
2. Say what you will about the other core shooters, they do play better as shooters than dust
COD, battlefield, halo, they may not be your faves but they have significantly advanced the bar of what shooter gameplay is. You may not like the mindless twitching of blops, or the giddy epic moments only in battlefield, but they succeed at their chosen formulas. Why would someone stick out mediocrity for months on end to maybe finally bask in the core camaraderie of Corps and the teamwork based gameplay and to finally enjoy a few games, when they can plug and play the other shooters around and start swimming right away...
3. Some of us have not played Eve
Meaning we are not familiar with ccp, it's practices, it's design philosophy, or the like. We don't know the lore, the races, or how they fit into the world. This leads to not knowing which suits excel at our particular playstyles until it is far too late...Me personally I had to make 5 chars before I figured out gallente starter suits were the best for me. None of the lore or progression information is clearly presented until after you make your character, in fact they tell you that your base choices will not affect your gameplay when they clearly do. I have a minmatar who in my starter fits I can't fight a cold, and a gallente who I can go 20-2 because the suit is geared to my playstyle. If there is no real sense of gravity in choosing until you've already made a mistake, how can a new player make a stand against veterans when he is already behind the 8 so far?
All in all the npe needs to be expanded and explained quite a bit more if we want to see the playerbase grow. I know word of mouth and recruiting is one of the primary pulls to dust, but even the website is obscure and not promoted in game to access this information. I know it's in the launch screen but I personally never read that. New players are missing out on email events and free stuff also in that respect... |

CCP doesn't want to fix the protostomping/npe problems. How else are they going to sell Aurum gear to all the noobs to stay "competitive"? lol
And if they actually explained things to noobs? EIther they would die less (and spend less) or understand the game better and not buy aurum gear in the first place. So it seems it's in CCP's best interest to let the stomping continue... Sucks but there it is.

I would honestly love it if tactics worked better than better gear. I have never cared much for running proto, and have only done it in PC where it might have made a difference. Since that is currently shutdown I see no need to be loosing money over some overpriced suit?! What's sad about proto stomping is you actually get atleast six vets, who you would think had brains, to all agree to run around matches fully fitted for PC?!
Man if you see guys going down in 3's, and you haven't even reloaded yet, downgrade?! They can't hang with your proto heavy and boundless assault hmg?! Hell who can? I run adv at the most period now. To save money, and to have a challenge! I'm a glutton for punishment if you will ::)
I fight tanks on foot, play demon and dark souls, and play all fighting games on their hardest modes ::) Do I win? Mostly not, but it makes me think of ways to be effective and overcome rediculous odds. The most satisfying thing in dust is killing a proto, and knowing he just read "frontline and assault rifle" lol! I'll run a modded frontline dropsuit, and save tons of isk! Stopped caring about k/dr from the beginning when i saw how one sided this game was?!
We've all been pleading with CCP to fix this militia/proto gap. Tactics should decide the battle. You would stop seeing so much explotaition and spam if guys stopped proto stomping everyone?! All this stuff comes from neccessity. Grenade spam comes from the need to be able to kill fully proto teams coming at you, and not having a rifle that can actually kill them?! If you knew your team could run good tactics and beat protos, you wouldn't need OP weapons. The game does not reward good tactics and just rewards closed beta vets?!
CCP seems to only listen to things that make them money, and not things that keep the game going?! Dust 514 is expendable to them since they have EVE. If it fails they've made money so i don't think they care?! They don't respond on these threads like this, but let a tanker whine and everyone comes in to fix it?! The result of that is tank 514?!
Newbs can't even get out of newb phase on this game?! Then there are threads talking about new players are coming to dust lol?! Yeah well they if they do we won't have shortage of snipers smh?!

IWS bascially storyboarded out a playable tutorial...make it so CCP! But until that happens, at least extend academy for goodness sake. Reign Omega is right about the Eve lore stuff too, as a closed beta vet I didn't really have to worry about that stuff when I started Dust, you either played scout, assault, logi, or heavy. I learned that way and then by the time Uprising came out months later I had the info to be able to make a decent choice on racial suits and weaponry.
We should have some sort of voice over description of each race on character selection. Give a very brief description of the race RP wise and what battle strategies they prefer.
For example: Caldari: place The State above personal goals, are a break away from Gallente federation, main enemies are Gallente, primary allies are Amarr. Caldari battle philosophy: rely on shields over armor and use long range weaponry athat is more effective against armor than shields. Flesh that out for each race and pay some people to voice act the synopsis as well as having such in words.
Most tankers are like sand people. They frighten easily, but will quickly return...and in greater numbers.

Getting your ass handed to you is normal. That's what happened to me when I started playing RTS games, for example. And the thing that I did was to look at replays to see what I did wrong and what my enemy did right. No need for a sob story about a little boy who gets defeated - Game should be challenging and fun, not just going through the motions.
Unfortunately, FPS don't work like that. There are few skills in this game that can be aquired through explicit transmission. You might argue that proto stomping does make you better, considering that the game gets easier once you get more skill bonuses, but my account is about six months old and I often get the urge to just throw the controller away when I've got another instance of a bunch of fucknuts invading the game with four tanks, two ADS and really ******* bad players that one-shot me because of their proto RRs. Seriously, those guys are so bad that I can kill their heavies with my scout suits in frontal assault, just by utilizing cover properly. They can't hit the broad side of a barn, but can enjoy a feeling of power with their proto gear and the mechanized force on their side.
And that's why I'm still in favor of a mode where proto players are set up against mlt/std players, with a 1:2 ratio or even more. This would allow stompers to get back some challenge due to a numerical disadvantage, while allowing newer players to enjoy the game by seeing their comrades fall alongside them. The sense of community when you rush a tank with militia AV should be fun. Which gets me to another aspect that is lacking - Community. The guy in OP's example had a mic. But there's plenty of players that don't. And that really hurts the game, because you start to resent your fellow mute blueberries after a while. The game needs a system for gestures or text chat or whatever. Just something that allows you to directly communicate with people who stand right next to you. Give a player a sense of community and he will suffer through anything. I experienced that with RTS games - The single most powerful feature in those was the centralized chat lobby. Any game without lobby died sooner or later, but the games with lobbies survived even with exceedingly small communities. |

we dont need a IWS story board added, we need tiered fighting, wether it be by SP or by dropsuit tier/meta levels. People will try argue that there isn't enough people to split the community, but reality is that there is, They're just scared of the thought of having to fight other proto tryhard 1337 scrubs. Fact of the matter is this game loses a larger majority of potential players through pathetic and poor design(non-existant) matchmaking and a terrible NPE(new player experience). I have had so many friends try Dust514, I run quiete a few games with a 6000+ strong online gaming community; I am the ONLY one of those people who plays Dust514. It is the only game I know of that we have only 1 person actually playing.
In an ideal world the stompers would realise that they have **** oponents and maybe switch to MLT/STD fits. They won't ever do this, I don't know if its a pride thing, or arrogance or maybe even they are scared a closer battle. This game will always struggle to capture new players. It's a shooter with the standards of 2008(max), claims of tactical shooter, no tactics in sight. Depth, though there is only a handful of things worth putting your SP into, which in reality is a shallow game. So many people will play for a few days and go back to Boyfriend 4 or kids of dookie, which rewards you fast, offers fast and clean(er) action.

It's just little kids don't grasp stuff right away because they're too eager to get started.
I agree, though, that there should be a better tutorial put in place to learn what a CRU actually does, or what a supply depot is capable of. Teach the young ones, CCP! |

I think a good way to fix this is to have a tutorial that's a little more like the Eve Online one. They'll be a simulation battle. So basically it will just guide him or her by page.
DISCLAIMER: This is a MMOFPS. It will take time to get good. This game requires a lot of patience.
Then sends him into a simulation of each Game Mode.
Basically NO AI BS.. just lets him or her look at the Minimap.. and shows what everything does.
They have to start with Ambush and show them what each symbol means (Amount of players and what the clone reverses are and what happens when it depletes.
****, maybe even let the player only choose Ambush until he gets a certain amount of SP (kinda like the newbie rounds in open contract).
Then a simulation of a Domination map which shows them that the rules for Ambush still apply, but there's also things that need to be hacked and this is what each thing does.
Finally dump the newbie into Beginner matches like it does now and hopefully then, he'll get enough SP and knowledge of the game to play with everyone else.
I know the problem is what if there's not enough new players. Well... then maybe the consideration of A.I. Simulation Matches would be a good idea.
Popularity is not an attribute of a Scout, unless it's the afterlife.
