Once upon a time I used to invite the occasional player to DUST 514, but they all felt pretty much like "Newberry". Their bullets did nothing against the enemy. I'm actually breaking in a new weapon myself now and I still get the same sort of feeling even though my suit skills are pretty good.

I'm glad you are not a quitter or a whiner and are up to a challenge, so why not make a fitting that you can only expect to go 2/12 in? If you play in that and improve your game and not resort to playing in your better gear then I'll admit you are right , but right now all I see is whining that you don't want to do that and just want to stomp because you were stomped. |

One thing is clear, if you are a novice, recommend a fat suit and rifle gauus, with the initial 500,000 sp is caught, will be the only way not to leave the game at first and may make war, that to me is the initial suit for novice ... And starting from there with time you get to the rest ...
These rookies have to go through what my also metoco pass (am "CHECHOMAN") and took only slightly more than 6 months, and a month ago is when I started to struggle with skinny suit, I have the pro logistical ak.0 and ck.0 by aurum or loyalty points, sentry pro ak.0 open the logistical pro gk.0, skinny and now I can give war veterans ... Time has cost me, and it was time, it is not only make the costume as you know, I do not sack suit, without having all well since then I have everything in the suit is a level 5 ... And his passive skills also increases ...
Right now I am about 22,000,000 sp, and pg (2,200,000 war points).
One thing is clear, now ccp, would have to give a new vlon created no less than 2,000,000 sp.
That's my opinion, a greeting from Spain ... Flamenco, bullfighting and ole! Hahaha

You said it.
Too many multiplayer games are over-populated with loud-mouthed, snotty teenage boys with the attentionspan of a palsied 4-year old. The hardcore nature of the Eve universe only serve to keep them out. And I for one am thankful for it.
Trying to make New Eden "more accessible to the broader public" would only hurt the game. |

There's definitely problems with the NPE, but as far as new players not being able to do anything in public matches that to me is more of an issue of PC players wanting to play highly competitive in their best gear but having no place to do so at (PC is effectively shutdown with district locking, FW is a one-sided joke with poor payouts). I sent him gg mail the other day thinking he was your alt

I also try to help "newberries" (although I only play with adults). When discussing the new player experience, I usually tell them the following...
1. Join a learner corp "DUST University" etc.
2. Stick to Skirmish mode so that... - You run into less proto-stomping. - You can achieve war-points more easily/safely.
3. Run in squads.
4. Be patient, try to not worry too much about your KDR.
5. If you quit, come back in 6 months and your character will have 4 million SP which will make the game more fun.
These are far from perfect, but they help the "new player experience" somewhat.

I had a similar experience with my sons. Baby boy is 12 and his kid bro is 8. I used to peel around in my limbus and they would hack stuff while i covered them. It was sweet being able to have mobile cover and teach them about supressive fire. I had a great time. They even saved my Darken mobile and picked me up at the ground spawn. They needed some one to look out for them and fill them in on everything. Putting them against competetive teams like Imperfects and Hellstorm just made them want to quit. Back then you could get camped alot easier. You would get killed before you even fully spawned in.
Neither of my boys still play. It stopped being fun for them and skilling up took to long. They couldnt handle the grind without a squad of Wolves watching their back, so they never played when i was at work. It is a damn shame there is no relief from corps like NS and STB who rock the best gear 24/7. Its their right because they started earlier. They found a way to take advantage of CCPs apathy for the NPE.
It is the same when I grab guys fresh out of the academy. They have no clue and are just fodder for pubstompers. There are a bunch of players willing to help these new guys but no real effective way of succeeding. We need things like a referral system after the academy. An academy that is useful. A check and balance to match making. Perhaps an option for corp squads to fight other corp squads. You will always have douchebags that prey on newbs, but a place for corps to have good matches against other corps is needed.

The assumption that proto stompers are looking for a challenge is a falacy. It is for the advantage, period. The fact that most of them have so much isk that it doesnt matter is the other half of the problem. I keep saying Faction Warfare is the place where high end players need to be playing. Right now i see the oppisite, proto in pubs and militia/standard in FW. |

If major, major things are not done to fix the NPE soon, this game will die or else not be worth saving. I am quite serious. New players are the lifeblood of games. It is absolutely critical that they are supported and taught and given a fair chance.
It is completely unacceptable for them to be thrown in against people with three times their HP, twice as much range, and twice as much damage as them without even being taught what the gamemodes are.

I've always regarded myself as fortunate in this game. Having first arrived in mid summer, I was just on the last end of being able to have enough SP accumulated in academy to compete in regular matches and even PC. The rest of the game I learned all myself, had no help from anybody in any corp, nor even any squads. I first started squadding up in late October and first actually decided to join a real corp back in December. Never even read these forums until late November.
Sadly, new guys just don't have a chance today. 400 WP or whatever it is for Academy is just a suicide mission. It was 12,000 when I was around and protostomp pubs were only a moderate occurrence. I still feel for the new guys when I'm in pubs and I see the bottom of the boards with guys going 0/10, 2/17, etc. A lot of them aren't going to spend all the time trying to build up skills and ISK either.
My recommendation is to just extend Academy for a decent length of time, and/or establish a secondary Academy for people who are at a certain SP level to avoid stomping of new players. At the current rate we'll just never have a large new player base and that's something we're all going to have to live with for the time being I think.

I agree 100% with your assessment. Couldn't have said it better.
Eventually this game will fade out as more and more of the old guard leaves for whatever reason and the player base slowly decreases, sad as it is.

Meta-level capped matches are the best short-term solution, in my opinion. While other options like tiercide are viable long term, something needs to be done in short order to make the NPE better.

We should all try to keep public squads up titled and geared to attracting new players and helping them out. I usually run one called "Noob-friendly Pubs" that gets surprisingly good traffic, as it seems new players do actually use Squad Finder. Have had several vets pop in looking to help, as well. If everyone in this thread did something similar, we could have squads up all day offering info/advice/lessons across the spectrum and be of great service to the playerbase. |

In EVE when you create a new character you get accelerated training up to a certain amount of SP. (Or at least you did.) Extend the academy and have triple xp up to a few million. Make it clear that once you leave the academy SP accrual will be normalized before boosters. I threw together an alt and was out of the academy in 1 1/2 matches, first death out of academy was to a proto suit. That is no way to retain new people, for every one that presses on more move on. I know New Eden is a harsh place, but there is no Highsec to fumble around in while you learn the game and skill up to a competitive level, dust needs something aside from being thrown straight to the fire.

Better matchmaking or prohibiting proto gear from public matches would be the best course of action. I feel sorry for the new player, it's tough to go against a team of protos. One or two aren't that bad. Tactics and teamwork could still overcome proto users. Get in a squad and everyone start aiming for the same guy. Have one guy toss a flux grenade and then someone else a locus grenade. |
