So this morning I was running a squad with some friends but we weren't quite full so I threw it in Squad Finder. A few seconds later the squad fills up and we're chatting when I suddenly hear this clearly prepubescent voice in my ear.
This young new merc promptly asked something along the lines of "when I log off, why am I not in a CRU anymore?" My immediate gut reaction was "OH GOD KICK HIM HE'S BRAND SPANKING NEW!" For some reason though, this catgirl had a shred of warmth in her heart and decided to help mentor this poor young fellow.
We played a few rounds of skirmish and he struggled (no surprise there), but then came the statement that was just an icepick to the heart for we vets - "I'm just going to snipe from now on, it's the only way I can get kills."
OUCH.
In the match the disparity between veteran and newberry became VERY obvious. Newberry said he felt as if her couldn't even get a shot off before he was dead. He complained on how other players could "eat" his bullets but for some reason their rounds were doing far more damage to him. This poor newberry was running around in starter militia medic suit going against Ishukone RR's and Boundless CR's - HE HAD NO CHANCE. This is someone who didn't even know the names of the game modes being put in a match against Hellstorm, Nyain, Molon Labe, etc...needless to say he was a bit dejected.
This newberry told us he has only been playing the game for about a day now. When asked how he heard of DUST he replied that he saw it in the PSN store and it looked "cool." He then informed us that he just kind of had to figure things out on his own. He figured out how to hack on his own and that defending the objectives were important. He had very little knowledge of the names of installations or equipment. He somewhat knew CRU's but he called the MCC a "big spaceship thingy" and didn't know what supply depots were.
The guy had spunk though, when asked if he would stick around or quit playing he said he'd stick around. I warned him though that if he thought today was bad, eventually he'll face super corps that will stomp him so hard he'll have to check his RL nuts for bruising. After a few more rounds of him getting his ass handed to him (even though we won some matches), he went off to play BLOPS.
I'm telling you, I've read and heard the stories of how horrendous it is for new players coming into DUST but I have never had a run in experience with it. CCP you have REALLY got to do something. He stated that a tutorial he feels would have helped. You have countless newberries like this running around not knowing what's going on that will get dejected and leave the game. If people have a bad new experience, negativity will spread by word of mouth and this game will never grow.
Something needs to be done.
