For those of you who may not have performed any dollar to SP conversions, this info may interest you:
The cheapest AUR is the "200,000 Aurum Plus 25,000 Aurum Bonus". That's .000444 USD per AUR.
The most effective Booster is the Active 3-day Booster if you cap out. It costs, 3500 AUR or 1.5554 USD.
If you cap out exactly, then you get 90,000 SP for $1.56
Let's translate that into how much skills will cost you in USD, since that's what purchasing boosters is really all about:
Skill Rank = Total SP to LVL 5 = Cost in USD
(x1) = 310,920 SP = $5.37 (x2) = 621,840 SP = $10.75 (x3) = 932,760 SP = $16.12 (x4) = 1,243,680 SP = $21.49 (x5) = 1,554,600 SP = $26.87 (x6) = 1,865,520 SP = $32.24 (x7) = 2,176,440 SP = $37.61 (x8) = 2,487,360 SP = $42.99
So, if you paid for ALL Assault Rifle Skills entirely with Booster money alone:
Assault Rifle Operation (x2) .................................................... $10.75 Assault Rifle Proficiency (x5) .................................................. $26.87 Assault Rifle Ammo Capacity (x3) .......................................... $16.12 Assault Rifle Rapid Reload (x3) .............................................. $16.12 Assault Rifle Sharpshooter (x3) .............................................. $16.12 Assault Rifle Fitting Optimization (x6) ..................................... $32.24
Total ......................................................................................... $118.22
I am interested in why people think that paying for boosters is a good deal.
Not to mention that it takes a lot of time to grind these out to hit caps.
Passive skill points have a terrible yield in comparison to active skill points. Using a passive 7-day booster yields 84,000 skill points for $3.11, nearly double the cost of active boosters.
Does anyone else think that the cost is completely ludicrous?

Boosters are not pay to win, you are not going to get a **** ton of SP off of them.
They are optional and only give a slight bonus that is the point it is not suppose to give more SP then actaully playing the game.

I understand. I have read several posts by die hard players who swear by boosters and I was wondering what makes them tick.
Assuming a merc earns 60 mil SP over a career, if 20 mil of those were earned by boosters, that would be about $350 at the most efficient exchange rate.
I'd hate to know how much money could be wasted at an inefficient rate. I estimate as much as $700.

The value in passive boosters is that you accrue points without investing in-game time. So you understand you trade additional SP for less time grinding. So passive should yield much less than actives if you are also getting your time back.
Also, wouldn't this suggest that the game is NOT PTW since a significant investment > $100 results in a relatively small, short-term advantage?

I have performed those calculations. That is why I will never spend a dime on boosters or microtransactions. I made a post called "I'd pay 5 bucks for 1 million skill points" that was very unpopular as a result.

You don't just get these SP instantly when you buy the boosters. The fully maxed out assault rifle example you gave, that would require 76 3-day boosters. Good luck capping out in three days for the next 76 weeks without getting burned out and hating your life.

Person A thinks it's awesome you can buy boosters for only $$$.
Person B thinks it's not worth to pay $$$ for the boosters.
There is nothing wrong with both persons.
It's all economics: if it really is too expensive then people would not buy them and CCP would probably lower the price.
It seems you don't belong to that specific target-group so what? You are not forced to buy anything. |

The problem is that when there are many people getting suckered into paying high prices, then the pricing approvers are justified to charge exorbitant amounts. My question is basically, why are so many people willing to pay this amount? I suppose it is a deep marketing question.
Your answer reflects a knowledge of market forces, so you should be familiar with what happens in the case of monopolies.
While there are other games in the genre, there is only one Dust 514 that offers this particular experience, hence the players are monopolized by CCP.

You math is under the assumption that people are using the 3 day boosters to cap out; where as a lot of us (lazy) people use the 30 day boosters which are cheaper. Not only are they cheaper, most of us got most of our AURUM in mercenary deals where we got a load of it free.
Also you forgot to count in the bundles and discounted offers CCP have been selling recently, also to the fact that those offered each came with one 7 day Omega booster, which makes your math even more construed.
I have to admit; based on 3 day boosters its interesting to see how those boosters work out in USD. I live in England so its even cheaper for me :D

Emphasizing and few key points:
- Boosters are optional
- They are not intended to provide huge amounts of SP
- They are not intended to provide more SP than playing the game semi-regularly
In short, if the cost vs. reward ratio was any better you would effectively be paying $5 = 1mil SP... like one of your previous threads suggested. No matter what way you frame this Clone D, you aren't going to be able to straight-up purchase SP with money.

It's not about spending money for skillpoints, it's about spending money to save time.
You will eventually get enough skill points through regular gameplay and passive sp, but boosters just save the amount of time it takes to get there.
That said I've only ever bought 30 day passive boosters fro 14k each, omega passives for 28k, 7 day actives for 3.5k ea, and 7 day omega actives (for sp events). I have bought 2 regular merc packs at $20 each, and the $100 merc pack (only cost me $30 though...I got $70 for free from sony) that came with 200k aur, two 30 day actives and two 30 day passives. I then spent that 200k on omega boosters and later on regular boosters. The rest of my aurum I spent on vehicles, dropsuits, and weapons while they were all 70% off during the sale right before 1.7, and I currently only have 15 aur left.
So I've spent $75 on this game, so a bit more than a brand new PS3 game, maybe a collector's edition ...but I have spent more than 1000 hours in this game, when usually I judge my money spent by the amount of gameplay it will get me. 1000 hours is more than I have spent in all of the FF games I've played combined, and more than any other MMO. ________________________________________
So grand total...
4 - 30 day passive omega boosters 4 - 30 day active boosters (From merc packs) 8 - 30 day passive boosters (2 from merc packs, 6 bought at 14k ea) 3 - 7 day active omega boosters (to be used on 3x sp events ONLY) 4 - 7 day active boosters (all bought at 3.5k price) -From the merc packs: More than a dozen BPOs in total Hundreds of random modules and items -Hundreds of Misc dropsuits/weapons to try them out before I wasted skill points. -Weapons on sale (On sale for only 7-15 per weapon, 1500 per 100): 200 Carthum ASCRs 50 Imperial Scrambler Rifles 100 Boundless HMGs 50 Freedom Mass Drivers -Vehicles on sale: 20 fitted dropships (1000 aur) -Dropsuit and vehicle pack (On sale for $5...regular $20): 300 crap dropsuits 100 mauler heavies (two highs, one low) 50 fitted LAVs 50 fitted Dropships 50 fitted Madrugars ___________________________________________
I don't know how much that is, or how much I have saved...and I really don't feel like trying to do the math either...but I've done the most I could with $75 in this game, and I feel like it was all worth it. Not to mention I always support things that I like.
However, now that I have over 30 million sp and only have active omega and std active boosters left, I just have to wait for the sp events.

Johnny Guilt wrote:microtransactions , This.
Also use of Boosters isn't so much as a good deal as they are the only deal.
Lastly if you buy AUR do not count the bonus into the currency conversion. It is tantamount to a discount, if you get a half price item the value doesn't include the money not spent (i.e a cup of coffee bought for $2.50 isn't actually worth $5 just because it was on sale).
The old packs had a conversion value of 20 AUR to the penny. 20 AUR = $0.01 (US Dollar).
So back to the beginning about Boosters being the only deal with the death of BPOs. Yes it sucks. Boosters are best bought during major sales like during last years Fanfest. Even then the 30 day Omega Passive was expensive at $18. Anyone who bought them earlier this year for over $30 are either rich or completely insane in the membrane.
But seriously what else are people going to do? The Penny Arcade gets expensive quick.
Here, have some candy and a Like. :-)

Can you verify that it is cheaper? My numbers don't show that.
I haven't calculated the coefficient if you get the 30 day booster as part of a deal, but if you purchase an active 30-day booster, then the cost is $12.44 per 450,000 SP; that is $27.65 per 1 million SP. If you can cap out in 3 days each week, then the Active 3-day booster is cheaper at $1.54 per 90,000 which is $17.28 per 1 million SP.

I look at it another way. DUST is my primary game right now. I'm averaging $20 per month and I play every day for at least an hour and generally for several. Even if I only average one hour per day my entertainment is costing me about $0.66 per hour and probably far cheaper with the actual amount of time I play.
I don't care how much this is costing per SP, dropsuit, dropship or whatever. Those numbers are irrelevant. This is about the cheapest form of entertainment per hour there is and I don't even have to spend anything if I don't want to.

Hi Rip! Yes, I understand that. I'm trying to understand the community; how people justify spending so much for marginal benefits. I suppose I'm trying to figure out the psychology of this niche of gamers.
I am deeply interested in the answers to these questions:
What drives anyone to pay for a free game?
What is so great about this game that is causing people to devote their lives to it?
The only answer that I have derived so far is that some people want power; to gain a foothold in the social hierarchy.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

You can have the DUST514 experience without paying any money, so I wouldn't break your head over it. Maybe, like me, they get rewards points for buying smokes, sodas, gas, etc..and those points van be turned into PSN cards. Thus I have "bought" an elite pack, veteran pack, and a bummer of Merc packs. Anyway I find boosters a better way to spend aurum than gear. Gear you use and lose the SP you get from boosters is forever

The company is offering the game for free but is hoping we'll pay for optional services. I believe in paying for things that I use and especially for those things that I enjoy. All the designers, artists, programmers and other personnel need to eat and have a roof over their heads too. I can afford to give them money so I do. In return I hope they run a profitable business and that all of us are happy to have the game in our lives.
I also realize that the more money that CCP makes the more they'll put into the game.
Those that don't pay for the game are just well programmed AI for me to interact with.

Reav Hannari, thanks for your awesome feedback.
Regarding your statement above, I too value my independence on the field, although I interpret this as being directly related to the power struggle. It's essentially saying, "I'm so strong and capable that I don't need anyone else." It is certainly a trait of alpha behavior.
So when I refer to the social hierarchy, it's not just about point standings, corporations and so forth. I see it as how we relate to society, even in the absence of interaction.
