Someone playin for a few months has accumulated a lot of lifetime SP, me myself i specced into stuff I don't use anymore or don't like to use (e.g Proto sniper rifles).
After the respec, ppl with experience in most of the weapons, suits and equipment, ppl that have been there before 1.8, won't spec into stuff they considered useless or not suitable for their playstyle. ( at least I hope they won't).
What does that mean: in my example, i will use the SP formerly invested in sniping and other skills i don't need/like to max out my favourite weapons I use right now, which i make quite some kills with. It will even be more OP (hint) than it is right now. I won't skill into any assault suit anymore, etc, just the stuff I like to use and work for my play styles.
That's actually what I like about a respec. Try new stuff, leave stuff u dont like aside.
TL;DR: From my point of view, a respec will drive away new players even more than right now, cuz they will face vets with 30 Mill SP or more, that invest all their SP in maxin out equipment, weapons and dropsuit they know like the back of their hands, whereas a new player will get devastated (in a wider array of racial dropsuits to choose from) by cloaked proto scouts and crazy buffed Proto Commandos or whatever.
My point is: A respec is gonna help seasoned players and vets more than attracting any new players. New players give a damn if there's a Minmatar heavy or Gallente Commando they can specc into from the beginning after 1.8.
They are too busy not being shot by anything out of 300m.
Respecs are gonna kill this game.
P.S.: that's my PERSONAL opinion, nobody needs to be offended.

Also I think its flawed to give a respect when 1) we still don't have all the vehicles, 2) we don't know the changes that will need to occur to balance the game
I can image 1.9 being nerfs/buffs and just balancing in general, which case people will whine the 1.8 FotM gets corrected
do we actually have a confirmation or is this still speculation?

I think that having to save up lager amounts of SP adds weight to my decisions. Do I really want that proto scout later or should i spend more time getting the quicker core scanning skills up. oh wait i'll just wait till the next time CCP gives me all my SP back and get it all at once.

As u can read in many post before (for example: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=137569&find=unread) unfortunately a lot of ppl are very aggressively supporting respecs. I don't know about a confirmation from CCP though.

I have 30 million, 95% perfectly specced with nearing 9 million unallocated. I'm gonna make sure I'm healing the **** out of all these respecced badasses so they can let rip on the masses with their streamlined fittings.

Our equipment, suits, and weapons are already maxed out. We will just end up maxing out different things.
The PC and SL should fit into the Sidearm slot so it's accessible and practical to carry one.

Sorry, you don't have a point. Mainly because new players will always get buttraped by 30 mil SP veterans, regardless of how badly they might have invested their skillpoints.
Also, please stop using the term "new players". Your whole thread is basically about what might drive YOU away, but you falsely try to make it sound as if you are somehow a representative for an important part of the playerbase (which you are not). |

I'd take my SP from Calogi, Galogi, Min Assault, Ammarr Assault and max out Amarr Logi, Min Logi, and Min Scout.
Let's not be dramatic. I already have all equipment maxed, all HP skills maxed, the only fitting stuff not maxed is Dropsuit Upgrades (L4), Light Weapon Operation (L4), and the weapon fitting optimization skills are only at L2.
It's not the 30 million SP people that the brand new players would have to watch out for. It's the guys a 15 million SP that have their SP all over the place. Overall the matches would be much more fun with more players specialized.
But a 30 million SP player getting a respec isn't going to change him/her much. Let's go ahead and put this myth to bed.

Yeah, a respec doesn't really help us older players out that much as we've got a lot of stuff maxed out already and many have plenty of unallocated SP to max out the new stuff they decide to try. For the newer players however, a respec will be greatly beneficial because they'll be able to take their wasted SP and spend it a little bit more wisely in making themselves competitive; hell a stacked squad team vs randoms just might not be completely one sided after a respec.
CCP: Is it the most asinine way possible to do this? Yes. Then that's how we're doing it.

This can easily be solved with an optional 2nd tier academy for players under a SP cap (like 2-5 mill SP). Give them an optional kiddie-pool to play in until they can put together a decent fit. It's a simple fix. I'm a "no-respec" guy, but I think an infantry respec with as many changes are coming is the only rational approach. Not to mention it will create more racial balance with a more even distribution of heavies and scouts.

seriously I'm not for or against an sp respec, my build is fine but if someone quits over a respec they are wound way too tight.

Except the new stuff thats coming, right? At proto level. U can skill into it right away rather than grind the SP like everybody else beginning to play DUST would have to?
If u like grinding SP for new stuff in EZmode (respec) be happy when u get it.
I'm good with my stuff pre 1.8 and will be ever after, no matter how many respecs ppl gonna QQ for.
@CCP: Sell respecs for Aurum , It seems like u could make a hell of a profit with that ;)

This. I played four matches in Academy with my new merc before being booted into the big boys playground. The NPE is a complete clusterfuck disaster and is going to send people away before they even get their first proto anything.
