Cloaks are almost ready to be released which is a very good thing, but I want to look at the practical uses of a cloak in Dust514
So as far as I have picked up, you need to activate/deactivate cloak and wait out any cooldown time You won't be able to engage in combat or do anything else while cloaked.. 'Shimmer' effect while moving.... which is the polite way of saying, 'we can see you dip****'
So scouts lose their equipment, and their CPU/PG to using a cloak In return they have the ability to hide, and contribute no WP to their squad
ehmmm... I don't see the point here... maybe I have missed something...
Because from what I have seen, this is only bad news for scouts... We can no longer provide uplinks or AV or even some ammo .... But thank god we can move about with this pretty shimmer while being unable to fight
This game is full of people trying to kill you... If anyone thinks invisible scouts will save you from the deaths a normal scout gets you are wrong ....
All this does is make it easier for scouts to sneak up on guys not paying attention... Which is about all the scout does anyway ....
I understand that firing while cloaked could **** people off, but you are asking scouts to give up
- Equipment - Fitting cost... (Speed/HP/DMG/Dampeners) - Ability to use weapon, without delay
I'm still hopeful that the cloaks can be implemented in a useful way, but so far I don't see it

You can fire a few shots, but firing rapidly drains the cloak and breaks the effect, so you can engage an enemy while cloaked.

I agree. I dont see the big deal in getting to fire first as a scout. They are so gimped. People hear "we are going to give the scout an edge over you" and they all begin to cry not fair. They neec to shut it and let the scout have 1 goddam thing to make it viable and special. If everyone is so buthurt, give only the scout the ability to get off the first shot cloaked. Plus I dont see the diff of swapping to ur gun to drop ur cloak and just dropping after the first shot. Both are going to be timing identical.

The CPM is pushing for players not being able to fire, but CCP stated that the current plan for cloaks allow a few shots to be fired before the cloak fails.

With rendering issues, lag, giant maps, volcanoes dumping red ash everywhere and YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED, YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED, YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED, I think the cloak will be a huge advantage. And as if snipers weren't big already red line hugging pussies, now they can cloak while hiding in their safe zone. I can't wait for the thales spam.
Also, I don't think the shimmering effect well be that noticeable to most players and a good scout will still try to ghost you from behind.
We'll have to wait and see how the cloaks work when we finally get them. All I know is cloaks are very powerful in EVE and you can't fire when cloaked, in fact there is a 5 second delay after decloaking before you can even lock your target.
Even if it's only a few shots, shooting while cloaked sounds OP to me, but time will tell. |

And @ Fire of P... of course they will be useful to an extent but look at the cost, a scout will sacrifice their fitting to use cloaks, gimping our suits.. along with no contribution to squads via links/hives/revives/RE/PE/scanners
All of this to be partially invisible, with a HP max of 300 if lucky
As a Plasma Cannon user I get what you are saying about under-rated items still being useful if used effectively, but a commando has always had a decent base HP along with 2 light weapons and an equipment slot, I've never underrated the commando It has the ability to support any good squad .....
Being an invisible Gimp is a different story, I don't see how a cloaked scout is going to out-do a fast scout IMO once we adapt to seeing cloaks used, they will be ineffective

Also, despite being cloaked... how much will it take to avoid a Gallente logi provided they recieve a scanning bonus
The cloak will have giveaways ... 'Oh my reticule just flashed red' followed by a shotgun to the face I think after the first few times, we'll be on guard too easily for this
I'm not disputing the fun, and I see how it will help with assassination tactics but good scouts do this anyway its the role they fill ....
I'm still not convinced that it will be worthwhile, I intend on testing upon release but so far the original design seemed 'OK' but I dont see why it isn't implemented as either a module, preferably optional High/Low slot variations or why it can't be a suit variation...
Damn... thats a really good idea, make it a variation of scout suits !!!! They can alter the numbers so it is easily used on these specific suits Suits could be designed differently, less visible when uncloaked or shimmering Skills would be the same Scout l5 would access proto cloak scout And we still get an equipment slot!!!!!!!!
So how about that..???

This idea needs work, but surely there is better potential with a new type of scout suit rather than forcing us to gimp current suits by equiping cloaks

If cloak is OP it'll get hard-countered by players speccing into scanners. Otherwise I'm sure it'll be good for scouts.
But seriously, no nerf needed because scanners are so viable for the average player as a counter. If you get killed by cloaks, equip a scanner, you have no excuse, HTFU. Scanners serve as balance since scanners are so important to run even w/out enemy cloakers.
But i will think they'll be useful, a Minja w/ nova knives and damage mods cloaking OneHitKilling sounds almost OP. Seriously, fear the knives.

We know what the pg/CPU costs will be?!?!?!?
And on a side note, my basic commando has all of this unused pg/CPU because it has no module slots, so i most likely can fit a cloak on my basic commando, but once I get into the higher tiers (proto specifically) I have to downgrade all my mods to enhanced or basic if I want to fit 2 proto weapons, wich to me is a fair trade off. So I don't think we will see many proto cloaked commandos.....unless they have barely any health mods equipped.
I see that scouts will become gimped and I want them to get a buff, I truly do. But until we know what the CPU/pg requirements are of the cloak, we don't know "how gimped" the scout will be.
The commando is gimped in the respect that it has very little module slot count (at proto it's only 3) and has the worst shield recharge rate of any suit in the history of dust. It has a 10 hp/sec shield recharge rate....that means 35 seconds for a basic commando to go from 0 shields to 350 (full).
Perhaps I should go scout next and rant all over the forums to get the devs to listen :p

The simple truth is that we can't make any kind of conclusions as to the viability and utility of a cloaked scout until we see the equipment costs and the dropsuits/possible changes of them. Speculate till the cows come home...or till we get stats and can draw more informed conclusions.

Yes , as I said I will need to test myself and I do not have fitting costs... what I do know is that if I have to sacrifice equipment, and any of the fitting currently available then the suit won't be worth running V MLT gear.....
Anyone who consistently runs scout knows that sacrificing this for a cloak will inevitably ruin our ability to contribute to the team...

Believe me I know, I ran MLT scout for a while and loved it, but I also realized that your equipment is your best friend, so here's to hoping scouts get 2 equipment slots :)

honestly i think cloaks are more likely to be implemented like the plasma cannon was. pre-nerfed to absolute ****.
All the threads i have read about cloaks made me not want the thing. movement penalties on a scout, no sheids when cloaked, decloak when near anything that is not terrain, showing up on enemies radar when you decloak, 5 seconds of cloaking for a full minute of cooldown, and the list justgoes on and on. All of which with the shimmer not full invisibility. When i hear shimmer i think of the cloaks from the first halo where you turned into an transparent blob. I still got sniped whle invisible.
On the other i do think cloaks shouldnt be game breaking and have drawbacks. The shimmer im fine with. The high fitting requirements i am fine with. Still being scanable im fine with ( i actually am in favor of cloaks not effecting scan profiles). Even manually deactivating my cloak with a short delay before fireing i am ok with. but some people hav just went into a fear induced frenzy. we stil have about a month til 1.8 (february) and then we will see how they are.

If they give scouts an additional equipment slot then the cloak will be exceptionally useful: ghosting through an enemy position that is completely fortified from a full frontal assault and dropping a single uplink behind them...hehe. Sounds good, doesn't it?
It's a very tactical piece of equipment that'll take brains and imagination to get the best use out of it. I'm all for more of that kind of thing in my games.

For being scanable. i would be ok with that because it is a viable counter to someone who is cloaked and precision enhancers and profile dampners would still be used rather than fitting cloak to easily beat scanners. The purpose of profile dampners are to help you hide from scanners. The purpose of cloaks are to help you hide from enemy eyes. If cloaks were ment to hide people from scanners then they would be called active dampners.

Oh, you thought I was going to put it on my scout, LOL. I use a Allotek nanohive. So not unless I get another equipment slot and some more CPU/PG.
I'll be really sad if it ends up turning out that the only way for scouts to be viable against the new assaults and heavys is by cloaking. I can't stand the thought of having to give up my Allotek (damn it CCP scouts need an extra Eq slots and the CPU/PG to make use of it). I don't want to be forced to play scout by having to rely on the cloak, I like my playstyle the way it is now.

Just round around the corner, cloak, and stay still with knives charged.
