CLIPS AND MAGAZINES
Now, I am not a gun snob, but I find it weird that every infantry weapon in this game is described as having a clip, when most weapons clearly have a magazine.
Lemme lay it out for you guys.
Guns with magazines
- Assault Rifle
- Scrambler Rifle
- Rail Rifle
- Combat Rifle
- Sniper Rifle
- Laser Rifle
- Scrambler Pistol
- Sub-Machine Gun
- Flaylock Pistol
- Forge Gun
- Heavy Machine Gun (Box Magazine/ Big Bucket O' Ammo)
- Swarm Launcher
- Mass Driver
- Plasma Cannon
- Shotgun (Internal Magazine)
Guns with clips
- NONE

Special
- Plasma Cannon (Single-Shot Cartridge)
- Nova Knives
- My Fist of Steel
Well, as it turns out, every gun in the game uses a magazine except Nova Knives, the Plasma Cannon, and the sweet sting of my Heavy's fist. It's of course not the biggest problem in the game, heck, it's hardly even a problem, but CCP may want to think about replacing "clip" with "magazine" in the future.

Interesting fact, clips are used to fill magazines, and magazines are used to load firearms. Back in WWII, soldiers actually carried clips of ammo with them to fill their .magazines, because the magazine was built into the rifle. Modern rifles (and Dust rifles) have detachable magazines, thus soldiers do not carry clips around, and just carry extra magazines.
TL;DR a clip puts rounds in a magazine, a magazine puts rounds in a weapon. |

20 years in the reserves working with police and others interested in guns. I heard it all the time.
On a side note. I wonder if the laser based weapons use batteries or some form of cartridges that fill a magazine.

Not sure what medium is used to hold the charge because i cant imagine a actual battery maybe there is something that converts the heat from a stored plasma charge into energy that is used. |

I wasn't too sure about the laser weapons, but since they look like magazines I just lumped them in with the rest of the magazine fed weapons. Although I imagine them to be more like Energy Weapons from Fallout, using Electron Charge Pack, Energy Cells, or Micro-fusion Cells, something like that.

I've thought that advanced laser weaponry could use fissionable material to make micro detonations and generate enough energy for a pulse. CCP has stated that our weapons are too dangerous for normal humans and those not protected by drop suits to use. So, nuclear bullets?

Hence, it's magazine vs clip things is pointless, now they're one and the same.

Its a shame CCP got lazy and used the same model/animation for the Rail Rifle as the Laser/Scrambler Rifle reload animations.
As I understand it the Rail Rifle uses Magnetic Rail technology, which fires a projectile at ridiculously high speeds. So the magazine should look like it houses those projectiles instead of a battery.....

Language however changes overtime.
Clip is an acceptable civilian term for a magazine.
Oh btw, in some nautical circles, they also sometimes call small arms magazines clips, simply because parts of a ship are called the magazine and it saves confusion. They also just use the term 'ammunition'.

Actually, the revolving chamber of a mass driver would be referred to as a clip, and is the only weapon in the game that has a clip.

In the strictest terms a Gun is a mounted weapon like on naval vessels although I'm willing to bet carriages count. Weapons under 50-caliber machine guns are handguns or weapons.
General use of the word gun to encompass more weapons is a later half twentieth century change thanks to slang.

The multiple stacks of cookies would be a box, and an individual stack of cookies would be a stack. But this analogy doesn't really fit clips and magazines very well.
Any weapon that can hold multiple rounds at a time holds them in a magazine. Clips load ammo into magazines. WWII era rifles had magazines, just as modern rifles do today. the difference is on the old rifles is tat the magazine was built into the weapon itself, and nondetachable. Therefore troops would carry clips to load into the magazine, which would then feed into the chamber of the rifle. Nowadays, we can simply remove the magazine and place a fresh one in, so we don't carry clips on us anymore. We still use them, but only for loading our magazines prior to the mission, not during, as WWII era troops would.
Here's a Wikipedia article on magazines for further information. |

Interesting thread, nice to read a bit about terminology and history.
Arguing about clip vs. magazine in a game where we can create ammo by simply walking close to a small device dropped on the ground does seem a little strange though

Just because people don't know the difference between clip and mag is not really an acceptable reason to say that they are currently interchangeable terms. They are completely different terms. OP is right. That being said, it's a small issue, one I'd like to see changed, but one I'm not overly worried about. So, CCP if you changed it, I'd be happy, but I'll play the game either way. |

Nope. Bullets are made of Nanites. Your dropsuit is basically a miniature nanite generator (With a limit, of course). If you do the math, the Sniper Rifle has something like 4.733333333333_ clips (Or some other ammunition-based term...). I can't remember the exact number and I'm not going to do it right now, but it came out as an irrational number last time I checked. I'm sure it's the same with other weapons as well.
In short, you aren't carrying extra magazines. I can only assume that you "plug" the magazine into your dropsuit to refill it (to a limit) Nanohives basically refill these nanites.
Or at least, that's the logic a player made up a while ago. There's no real explanation as to why some weapons have weird/irrational numbers when it comes to magazines/clips/whatever.

We do not magically make the stuff. minerals are placed into the nanohives, and micro drones make the ammo for you.

lolno. That's completely false. WE don't carry around nanites on us. the ammo that we carry around is pre-made and fitted into mags/batteries/drums/cylinders, and the nanites that are in nanohives build the ammo and mags from minerials stored inside of the nanohive.
