[Specializations] When Uprising 1.0 launched, I made this thread, basically the point was this: The logistics and now the commando dropsuit are the only examples of specialization done right as of now. The logistics is very different from the basic mediums; giving up one thing to be very good at (or "specialize") something else. Likewise, the commando heavy specialization sacrifices HP and and the heavy weapon slot in exchange for 2 light weapons.
The majority of what we have right now however are not real specializations, but mild tweaks. From medium to assault, from light to scout, and from heavy to sentinel there is barely any change. This is very bad in my opinion.
[Basic frames] Basic frames are suits with no reason to use them, we should NOT have useless suits with no purpose, especially since it can't be used to save money (seriously, why are they more expensive?). Not only are basic frames bonus-less (thus inferior) versions of specialized suits, but also more expensive. There should be situations where you would actually want to use them, both ISK-wise, and gameplay reasons. They need a price cut, they should be at least 10% cheaper than their specialized counterpart, they should be the cheaper alternative to specialize suits.
They should be very generalized and versatile in slot layouts compared to their specialist counterparts, like a middle ground between the specializations of the suits; this could be done by altering the basic frames (like medium basics get a 2nd equipment slot and lose a module slot), or by altering the specialist suits (like taking equipment slot from assaults, and grenade slot from logi, so basic will be a middle ground with both).
[Solutions]: these are just examples of how I would solve the issues of price and slot layout. PRICE: basic frame price = specialization price - 10%
LIGHT (reasoning can be found here) Basic: + 1 high or low slot (& PG/CPU to fit it, they need a buff anyway) Scout: + 1 equipment slot (& PG/CPU to fit it, they also need a buff) Pilot: ? (not here yet, so can't say)
MEDIUM Basic frame: + 1 equipment (2 equipment total, between assault and logi) Logi: - grenade (they already have an extra low slot & lots of equipment compared to assaults, offensive abilities like grenades shouldn't be emphasize) Assault: + 1 high slot (logis get an extra low slot compared to assaults anyway)
HEAVY Basic: -sidearm, + 1 equipment (middle-ground between commando and sentinel) Sentinel: same Commando: same

I honestly hope that something like this is part of what they have in mind when they redo the Specialist suits.

I was a bit disappointed to see no apparent skills on the basic suits as of the SiSi dumped changes. There's some serious balance issues with those SiSi changes too though.

KAGEHOSHI Horned Wolf, I have a question
Prerequisites: Advanced Gallente Light Frames including scout is 2 high 2 low which of course breaks the chain of progression in the suit. It's messed up and prevents the scout from ever having only 3 low slots at advanced.
The reason someone justified so was so an Advanced level scout could not slap on 3 MLT Profile dampeners and evade a prototype scanner. With the penalty accounted for, Level 3 scout (no dampening skills) and 2 MLT profile dampeners put the profile at 28 while the third would push it below to 25ish.
Considering that the Light Frames do not have an applicable scout skill, this could warrant them to have 3 low slots and 1 high slot instead of the current 2 H 2 L at advanced tier. This would help distinguish the Gallente Light Frame from the Gallente Scout as well. Would give a good reason to use it for other non-scoutly purposes, like armor tanking or speed tanking or rep tanking.

I don't understand which part of that was a question, but very good point with the slot thing.

Make them useful, or jut remove them. If you remove them, make the basic frame skill unlock the specializations, and make specialization skills just give bonuses instead of unlocking.

I think that just dropping the price substantially would go a long way. It's a basic suit, no bonuses, no frills, just a basic suit. No need to make them a lot different than the corresponding specialist suit otherwise. The only allure needs to be cost/simplicity.
Just make it so you get what you pay for: A cheap suit that works, like the netbook of Dust. Make it 10-20% less than the corresponding specialist suit, maybe reduce the SP cost to get to proto, bang. An actual reason to use that skill and the suit.

If you're going with a model like EVE, then yes.
Frame suits should be multi purpose and OK at most things.
Specialty suits should feel like 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

I believe originally I heard that the Frames were sort of general-purpose suits with no bonuses but possibly more base stats and slots to make up for the lack of bonuses. What we have now is a pale (yet unfathomably more expensive) watered down version of the role specialized suits.
Shame, so much could have been done to make frames a common sight on the battlefield with the specialist suits excelling in very specific very focused roles.

I think that we need more suit options. First, make the "specialty" suits true tech II items. They are sort of that way anyway. In EVE, the TI ships have roles, but are much less specialized than T2 ships. IIRC, T1 ships have one set of role bonuses, but still a lot of variability of use, and T2 items have the role bonus of the ship they are based on, plus a further set of bonuses. So, instead of basic suits being gimped versions of the specialty suits, give them roles, just with mild bonuses, and require level V of the appropriate skill to unlock the "specialty" suits, as one would expect of T2 gear. Then make the specialty, T2 suits VERY good at a very limited role. For instance, make an infiltrator light suit with massive bonuses to cloaking, concealment, mobility, and maybe hacking, but then nerf it's ability to do damage into the ground. Basically make it nearly impossible to actually kill something with it. Then maybe make a "glass cannon" suit. Not especially stealthy, super easy to kill, but if it gets the drop on you, you die before you know what hit you. These are just some on the fly examples, of course. |

Suit progression.
I use all the different races in one tree so please over look that and any spelling mistakes.
Starter suits get a static racial bonus Standard get one per level bonus Advanced get two per level bonuses Prototype gets two per level and a static bonus
Of course slot layout and resources can be argued over later but this type of tree would allow any suit to be useful and fun. The hard part is getting the bonuses correct. There is like 36 suits in that tree and if you multiply them by the four races then you have a total 144 suits that are all different. I would make up some example bonuses but I don't have time. Do you think something like this would be better than what we have now?
