i liked the event and thought the rewards were decent.
If i didn't already like the game and login daily, this wouldnt have changed that. Not a big enough event.

It might be interesting to know how much SP/how long you been playing. Maybe it was good for newer players but for vets it might have been more a bitter vet syndrome?

I think they would like this too but they just don't have a system in place to skin things or only allow certain items during certain periods of times. Hopefully 2014 is the year they make some major upgrades to the system.

My main issue is, that often I only have time for a few matches at night, and sometimes, those few matches were massacres, where we were pinned at the red line. This prevented me many times from getting anything. Even though I was #1 on my team many times, because of the loss, I missed out on almost every day of rewards.
I still think the kill or resupply or team spawn counting is the best way to go. This gives every player a chance to get items if they are good or at least prolific.

Basically what other said as far as the event being better probably for newer players. I found most of the items underwhelming and 12 really does go by fast. If it was intended for newer players, I see them losing out on this equipment most matches before even finding out the potential of said equipment.
It kept me logging in each day and since I have an active corp was easy to grab it and go. Though, honestly, without the event, I would have just logged in for the free consecutive points and been on my way over this break.

Where was the significant occurrence?
Hell, when one those special contracts show up that placed you in a game where everyone deploys with dumbfiring swarmlaunchers that actually shoot snowballs and santa/showmannen dropsuits and you get a goodie for every kill you make? That's what I call an event, but yeah it's too much work so they don't do that. This was not even worth the name 'event'.

Rewards were very inconsistent. The Quafe and Black Eagle suits? Cool, but they've already been given out as rewards, which diminishes their uniqueness for people who earned them previously and makes them less special for people who get them now.
Kinda surprised they haven't implemented an achievement or medals system where they can give out cosmetic and moral rewards that aren't items that can be acquired from the store for a few AUR. |

Well it could have at least been a bit better had it been rewards of like 50+ of an item or something like that. We all know they have better stuff to fix then create Christmas themed things.

This was my thoughts on the subject.
A handful of low-level gear or a gob of suits I have a bunch of already isn't all that cool.
tl;dr for the link: A reward that'd inspire me to log on would be a couple of militia suits that have different colors than normal. Not even intricate color changes. A palette swap would suffice. No fancy balance breaking gear. Just some warbarge bling would be enough.

I really like the concept of the event and it somewhat encouraged me to play a quick match but i feel like it should have been tiered rewards.
e.g. day x: 1 win = aur std assault rifle, 2 wins = aur adv assault rifle, 3 wins = aur pro assault rifle.
This way we are more encouraged to play a few rounds and we actually use some of the rewards.
"Scan Attempt Prevented"... Music to my ears.

As for any content ideas... You want an event?
1) Free for all, all players spawn in an enclosed arena, vehicles are prohibited, Light weapons are prohibited, heavy weapons are prohibited. You spawn in a light suit, with a scrambler pistol and nova knives.
2) Drop ship Demo, All players are given a 'special' selection during this even from the vehicle menu, The Demolition Drop Ship. They are speced out to have militia blasters with 1 damage mod and an active scanner. Two players are the gunners and one is the pilot, the team that clones out first loses.
3) King of the rock pile, A single wide area indestructible nano-hive, which reps a 75 HP (armor and shields), and regerates at 20% ammo is placed on top of a hill/rock pile. The players within the range of the nano hive get the benefits of the nano-hive. Winners are the team who still has clones left.
4) Squad enforcement, a match is created with room for only 12 people. All players are forced into a single squad, and placed on the largest map. The clone count is only 36 per team. When you spawn in you spawn in 25m behind (opposite direction of the opponents) the rest of your squad. Winners are the team with clones left.
Take those for a test drive.

Dev sponsored teams given new content, and mercs fighting them can "earn" the bonus content through special battles. The most obvious flaw is covering timezones. Though this could be minimized through the use of Proxy organizations, such as crewing a special Corp for the event and recruiting players to run the gear, and allowing them to earn bonus gear for joining the Dev side.

Events are always good.
My feedback on this one however -
Players should actually feel like they are taking part in something, as in, doing something differently. Players who skip past the 'news feed' when logging in and jump right into games, would literally be participating in the event without even realizing it.
For future events, I think it'd be a great idea to utilize the "Other Contracts" option. As in having event specific battles, so that everyone in the game is consciously participating in the event.
And then the prizes. I think the prizes should be awesome, but the risks should be high as well.
In my imaginary 'event', players would play special battles found in "Other Contracts" during the time of the event. The battles would not reward ISK, but have really awesome gear rewards, like unique prototype variants. There would be a somewhat decent participation prize, so you wouldn't leave any game empty handed, but winners would get something really awesome (don't know what, perhaps choosing one of several unique items... vehicles etc).
I think an event like this would be competitive, engaging, risky, and above all, FUN!

definitely understand this. Every time I have to login, I have the mic glitch which many do right now where you have to login, activate a channel voice coms, logout, then back in again. Am reminded this entire holiday season that a year later and large bugs still exist. I'm a vet and if not for the fact, I don't see how anyone just trying the game would accept the bugs but CCP knows this and I'm just waiting to hear what their plans will be in 2014.

Agreed, it was better than nothing but I think the point of most of it all is, if it not unique or valuable then small quantities will be viewed as an underwhelming reward.
You should take a second and do the poll, not much to read, 6 options to choose from, basically 3 questions within the poll.

For something that ran at a time when few staff were available and which was holiday themed this event seemed reasonable. Not exciting or really ground breaking in any way but I don't think it was supposed to be a highpoint for events anyway.
I'm not sure the win requirement made a lot of sense here, given the meta level and amount of gear handed out. Requiring a win can be a good mechanic for the right event but here it was disproportionate to the reward.
It also suffered due to the usual issue where one in every ten modules CCP gives away is useful to any given player. Extra SP or ISK should be part of every event where we're getting a shotgun blast of random crap. Don't like giving out SP and ISK? Then design more elegant events than "today you get a few of a randomly selected module". |

Thanks for stopping by Ya me too, I would like to see the initiative come from the team(s) that actually does the rewards and marketing.
Actually that might be a good dev blog on how those teams take the data from an event and analyze it. Was it an effective event? how do you determine what players might like? the process of creating the event, the challenges, what you can and can not do? etc.

As far as getting isk as a reward, I think once we get the player market (whenever that is) we'll feel less underwhelmed because we'll have the ability to convert what we cannot use into isk or if we have a corp where we know dedicated players will use a piece of equipment more than me, tradesies. I get specialist weapons in types that I know I'll never use, but wish I could give to a corpmate who could use all he could get.
Other than that, I agree with Aqil in that the win requirement made it very hard for some people. On the days my corp was on, this was an easy requirement, but when alone (2 days), I found it difficult and wishing I could hurry up and win one so I could turn the game off. I'm not a new player so I imagine for newer players, this was just frustrating and even more reason to not continue playing, especially during the holidays. Next time, a 'minimum number of games' might be a better option.

Some of the stuff was great tbqh - the black eagles and quafe suits were very nice. But things like enhanced shield extenders, which aren't used much by anyone, aren't of much use. Perhaps it's simply an issue with how useful some of the items are in game. Few people use fused locus grenades and enhanced shield extenders.

Full time college student on Christmas break (read broke with nothing better to do), had me logging all of my tons each day looking for a win. Cool for you I spent more time in Dust. Bad for you... The prizes may come in useful but they all look like AUR items to me. Which means i'll never have more than 12, so meh. I've been over exposed to Proto stomping and am really close to being burn out on Dust. Not one of the items is permanent. Not looking for amazing items, but a bpo of some sort to remember the event would have been awesome. (Maybe a Christmas colored frontline? A "Rudolph" laser rifle... something militia grade and festivish...) Came really close to missing the event, and wouldn't have even noticed or been upset...

Personally, I'd rather see reward items named iin different ways to make them special, even if they are only ADV items.
Like a heavy suit with something santa implied, or a scout suit in reference to an elf. Maybe even a LAV with references to reindeer.
And then modules could be called different christmas decorations or something. What about santas vs elves where it would be kills in heavy suits vs kills in scout suits? Some creativity would be nice.

Take those for a test drive. Veka, you just earned my vote. How about a commando LolRena?: Free for all, everyone spawns in a1 commandos, fitted with plasma cannons and nova knives, the Plc has 1 shot, and it's proto tier. The NK's do diminishing damage as you charge them, but the range increases, and punching out a full charge does 300% melee.

Really, if this game is going to have items associated with any one religion in it doesn't it seem foolish not to be a little more inclusive. Or how about this, we leave out the whole Christmas themed thing and just make a good game.

Christmas is more like a cutural thing nowadays than a religious thing. Santa has, besides the origin of his name, nothing religious about him. CCP have added nothing religous, nor referenced to the religious origins, of this event. I think you are overly sensitive. Also, CCP are not the government. There is no seperation of church and game developer. So even if they did add some reference to the baby jesus or the christian background to the event, there's nothing stopping them. Would you really be upset if they did something for chinese new year? Or for the islamic new year? |

Rewards for this event haven't been passed out yet. Most likely you received items for the last event, RR, CR trials. |

The rewards were not only a joke but actually kinda insulting. the made me feel that the little discussion CCP had included the sentence "**** em and feed em beans".
Day:1 Queef scout gk.0 suits, great if you have gallente scout suits a level 5. Otherwise 100% useless Day 2: Hacked Nanohive: ya... a ******* nanohive, not a good nanohive. Day 3: Pyrus STANDARD assault rifle.... tef fuh? Day 4: Heavy Mauler suits.... not to bad on this one but still...meh Day: 5: Fused locus grenades, 12 of them...yup Day 6: ADV armor plates..boring Day 7: Standard repair tool almost useless. Day 8 Black eagle suits, 1 bullet away from dead, useless suits Day 9: An aurum shield extender shown with the armor icon /facepalm Day 10: ADV submachine gun, one of the better ones, still didn't log in. Day 11: A scanner I can avoid with my gallente assault suit. Day 12: who gives a duck.
All in all not only was non of this good, but there was no surprises. No red and white santa suit for the Heavies, no green and red elf suit for the scouts, just absolute lack luster bullshit. Showed me they don't want to have to do any work here, if it aint creating fancy ingame menus or fancy pages for their website they don't want to know. Apparent by effort in the 12 days of dust event page versus the rewards given. I say next time don't even bother.
I would have just ran an X SP/ISK/LP event. simple as. 1st day 10% extra SP/ISK/LP through to the 12th day 120% SP/ISK/LP, raised the cap to 120% its usual. Given all maps snow for these 12 days and said merry ******* xmas.

I agree, for what was given, simply logging in should have been enough. Maybe login gets you xx item, plus win xx matches and you will get a surprise item for that day. Larger quantity or rare official weapons would have made this event really nice but like you said it feels like a last ditch effort to through something together for the sake of having something.

Hopefully 2014 is the year they make some major upgrades to the system. We'd love to - but the backend for this just doesn't exist at the moment. It's definitely something we want to do and will be looking at putting systems in place for in the future.
A couple of items were good (the Quafe, black eagle, and Heavy fitting), many were average or subpar (but this is free stuff from a free game, so I'm not going to complain too much), but I was hoping for more unique items.
I understand if the backend wasn't in place for room decorations, but a holiday themed drop suit would've been really cool. Something like a red and white "Santa/candy cane" theme; a green, red, and white "elf" theme; or even a special snowflake color scheme (light blue/white) suit or vehicle would have been awesome. I could even see it as a final reward- get all the items from each of the 12 days, and then get the bonus suit. That would have made me more excited to make sure I log on each day.
Of course, there's one day left, so I can still hope.

I'm cool with the event overall, I think it was good in that the requirements were small and didn't encourage massive protostomping like the last one.
If I were to offer some constructive criticism, I think most of the items, like the enhanced extenders and pyrus AR were a little too weak. I think they all should have been ADV or better no-skill items, at an absolute minimum. Personally though, I think they all should have been different colored suits (shouldn't be that hard to do, I would think), or, failing that, all of them should have been prefit suits like the heavy was, all with no skill prerquisites.
Make the first day 12 of some weak suit, then day two, 11 of a slighty better suit, day three, 10 of an even better one, etc, until on the last day you get a no-skill-required full proto suit.

Well, the 12 days each day having a different item to win was okay, but it also encouraged me to only login and play 1-4 matches each day, why play unneeded matches during the holiday times? Also...I was hoping for a special holiday reward for you know actually sticking with Dust 514 it kind of let down not to get one. Mind you the passive boosters for 50% off was very nice (Finally they did this, about damn time) They also had a package for 75% off which was decent, but then again that isn't a holiday themed gift or truly special. I guess what I'm saying is, I wanted an actual gift like you get on Christmas, the other stuff was just nice fluff, but still just fluff. |

It's possible my post ended on a more sour note than I had intended, I just think we should have moved past handing out random gear by now. CCP has gotten the same feedback regarding this style of reward structure for a while now but it keeps happening. I'm relatively certain that "More appropriate rewards" was one of the things the community requested quite loudly when CCP had that thread on what we want to see from events, yet here we are.
Brush Master wrote:I agree, for what was given, simply logging in should have been enough.
This is tricky. I think that the win requirement can be very handy as it's not just gear you got, it's gear you won. It is possible to add value to low ISK rewards by adding that condition, even where people resent the necessity if it gets them playing it's not a terrible thing. The problem arises when the gear is not just cheap but also useless. Winning it is like winning one of those paper cracker things people pull on at Christmas. You get a joke and a crown but you don't feel like a winner. Just handing things out wouldn't have made this a better event so much as it would have changed people's complaints, stuff I'll never use stays stuff I'll never use no matter the relative ease with which I acquire it.
My feedback is basically this:
CCP, you were told that better events require more appropriate rewards rather than just randomly selected gear. You were told this repeatedly, some time ago. You failed to incorporate this into your event design philosophy. This event suffered as a result. To do better give us events with either
A: Stuff everyone can use (SP, ISK or possibly LP).
B: Gear tailored to each player.
C: Unique or genuinely rare/desirable items.
D: Some partial combination of the above.
Don't give us events that are flawed in a way we've already explained and then ask why we don't like them, you know why. |

I think winning is fine if the rewards match the time needed to do it. If you squad up with a 6 man group, your chances are much higher of winning so it is encouragement to work together. We know player market is in the works so that will help somewhat but does not change the fact that the rewards are no where near what players would like them to be.

I think its a point for some that 0% of items have matched their role. CCP has a thing for scouts? and small amounts of std or adv gear. This round we saw AUR gear, players are not dumb, it seems to be a marketing idea that maybe someone will build a suit for 12 uses with xx item and maybe they will buy AUR to restock the suit; however, they failed to account for that high death counts of most players. Who is going to buy tons of std or adv AUR gear when you die 5-10 times a match on average.

Just part of the problem. One is same items being given and other is almost useless items. Free is free but why bother if players view the event rewards as nothing special. It was underwhelming. Coming off the heels of the EVE Christmas event, I was intrigued by what Dust might be able to do with the same sort of setup. I actually pulled up the reward page every day to see what I might be able to get, hoping for some limited cosmetic or "fun" types of items that you'd only be able to pick up once in a year.
In the end, I didn't login a single time to play a match for the event, because not a single reward seemed worth it. Granted, I have issues with the current TTK to the point I don't find the game particularly fun, but I might've made an exception for something unique. Instead... it was all very meh and disappointing. That's compared with stuff like "livestock" and "Fedo" from EVE, mind you... which I thought was very amusing even though I have no use for them. I did login to see the vehicle changes (and noted removed BPOs... /sigh). I assume I have another month or so to 1.8 and hopefully some useful TTK adjustments and possibly content.

The idea of giving free items is always nice, and the requirements were fair enough since a victory is not impossible to achieve even if you play in MLT. However, most of the rewards were/are useless to me because I already have them or I can't use due to missing requirements.
As a final note, I was quite surprised when I read "M-1 "Neo" suit" while on the background there was a Caldari soldier... c'mon guys! >_<

Liked the idea, logged in everyday to get the reward, but was repeatedly disappointed by most of the rewards themselves on reveal. |

Apparently i missed a day. I guess I played too early and got the win before the roll over. Oh well, no chip on my shoulder. I'm fairly certain I won't use most of this equipment seeing as I can't make any more fittings CCP. FOLDERS!!!

These rewards are genuinely good and people asking for new items in this event don't have a good grasp on reality. No one's saying that these items are bad, it's just more that they arent all that interesting. If they were looking for rewards that would inspire somebody who's been around for longer than a couple weeks to log on then the sort of items they were giving out didn't do the trick.
right on.

lithkul devant wrote:Well, the 12 days each day having a different item to win was okay, but it also encouraged me to only login and play 1-4 matches each day, why play unneeded matches during the holiday times? Also...I was hoping for a special holiday reward for you know actually sticking with Dust 514 it kind of let down not to get one. Mind you the passive boosters for 50% off was very nice (Finally they did this, about damn time) They also had a package for 75% off which was decent, but then again that isn't a holiday themed gift or truly special. I guess what I'm saying is, I wanted an actual gift like you get on Christmas, the other stuff was just nice fluff, but still just fluff.
yes, kudos for a nice promotion that we all been asking for.

My feedback is basically this: CCP, you were told that better events require more appropriate rewards rather than just randomly selected gear. You were told this repeatedly, some time ago. You failed to incorporate this into your event design philosophy. This event suffered as a result. To do better give us events with either A: Stuff everyone can use (SP, ISK or possibly LP). B: Gear tailored to each player. C: Unique or genuinely rare/desirable items. D: Some partial combination of the above. Don't give us events that are flawed in a way we've already explained and then ask why we don't like them, you know why. Edit: Or events which have a link to EVE lore. They're not for everyone (lets face it, some people don't care) but it wouldn't hurt to have them every once in a while, especially since we had so many during beta where we couldn't choose a side but now we have that ability and it's going to waste.
some really good feedback, thanks.
