I'm not sure the win requirement made a lot of sense here, given the meta level and amount of gear handed out. Requiring a win can be a good mechanic for the right event but here it was disproportionate to the reward.
It also suffered due to the usual issue where one in every ten modules CCP gives away is useful to any given player. Extra SP or ISK should be part of every event where we're getting a shotgun blast of random crap. Don't like giving out SP and ISK? Then design more elegant events than "today you get a few of a randomly selected module". I agree, for what was given, simply logging in should have been enough. Maybe login gets you xx item, plus win xx matches and you will get a surprise item for that day. Larger quantity or rare official weapons would have made this event really nice but like you said it feels like a last ditch effort to through something together for the sake of having something.
It's possible my post ended on a more sour note than I had intended, I just think we should have moved past handing out random gear by now. CCP has gotten the same feedback regarding this style of reward structure for a while now but it keeps happening. I'm relatively certain that "More appropriate rewards" was one of the things the community requested quite loudly when CCP had that thread on what we want to see from events, yet here we are.

This is tricky. I think that the win requirement can be very handy as it's not just gear you got, it's gear you won. It is possible to add value to low ISK rewards by adding that condition, even where people resent the necessity if it gets them playing it's not a terrible thing. The problem arises when the gear is not just cheap but also useless. Winning it is like winning one of those paper cracker things people pull on at Christmas. You get a joke and a crown but you don't feel like a winner. Just handing things out wouldn't have made this a better event so much as it would have changed people's complaints, stuff I'll never use stays stuff I'll never use no matter the relative ease with which I acquire it.
My feedback is basically this:
CCP, you were told that better events require more appropriate rewards rather than just randomly selected gear. You were told this repeatedly, some time ago. You failed to incorporate this into your event design philosophy. This event suffered as a result. To do better give us events with either
A: Stuff everyone can use (SP, ISK or possibly LP).
B: Gear tailored to each player.
C: Unique or genuinely rare/desirable items.
D: Some partial combination of the above.
Don't give us events that are flawed in a way we've already explained and then ask why we don't like them, you know why. |
