Mobius Wyvern wrote:You know, I've posted in threads like these before saying all the usual **** about "HTFU" and "QQ" but when I was talking to a good friend of mine today, I finally came to a realization that was rather sobering.
One of the central pillars of the EVE community is the sense of community itself. From people who like opposing playstyles all the way up to massive coalitions who spend all their time killing each other, come FanFest they would all get together for a beer and a laugh and swap stories.
I can't see that in Dust. I could actually see that turning into fistfights.
The problem with this community is that attempting to be part of it takes good people and turns them into something else. Day after day all I see is threads about how this Corporation are cheaters, or this other Corporation is doomed to fail because we're better, or this asset is OP and me and everyone I know will leave the game if you don't nerf it completely, and the list just goes on and on.
I thought General Discussion on the EVE forums was bad, and I've made jokes about other game forums being worse, but while those other games had many people getting on each other about in-game issues, these and the Planetside 2 forums are the only ones I've been on where people get so hostile and vindictive toward each other, nevermind the game.
I've had a few members of this community that I actually looked up to, that I saw as a beacon of reason in the sea of angst and backbiting, and recent events have made me see that they were all the same as the others that have come and gone, tried to be good men and been consumed. In keeping with the tone of this sob story, I'll leave identities to the imagination, because they don't really matter anyway.
I guess what I want from this thread is for everyone who reads it to just take a step back and examine what the feel, and how they want to go about supporting or discussing it. I strongly believe that all the people who post here are good people, but we're letting ourselves get wound up in all the negativity and not getting anything done but starting all these feuds that have led to our current state of not being able to get consensus on even the simplest topics that most of us actually agree on.
I'm not really sure why I started this other than that I felt like I wanted to make a statement, but I guess the thing to draw from it is that we're all here together because we find something in this game that we enjoy, or we see the potential for it to get better. Even the ones who post about being gone forever that say they're just around to laugh at those foolish enough to stay still come back when the patches drop, even if they do leave again.
For better or worse we're all here, and we might as well try and work together to accomplish something. That's all.
You all suck. This game sucks. The developers suck. The moderators suck. The GMs suck. I hope you all die in a fire filled with AIDS gas & Ebola water.

Ludvig Enraga wrote:Hmmm.... what's there in common between PS2 and Dust? Lets connect the dots. F2P FPS is the answer - this is the root problem.
EVE is an MMO the sense of community is in the center of any successful MMO - players identify themselves as citizens of whatever virtual world they play in.
Dust is an FPS, it attracts and foster players who are aggressive and competitive a lot of whom are also pretty young - teens and very early 20s. If you throw an untoward monetization system in our case F2P that skews the balance of this competitive environment, you end up with a lot of angry ppl.
Surely this is readily apparent to you, no?
Damn.. missed your post. would have saved me time in writing my own post that's pretty much saying the same. lol

Surt gods end wrote:It's not that hard to really not understand. Eve is a mmo. mmo communities are like anime communityes to me. no matter what anime you like, you all come together to enjoy anime.
FPS games (like PS2) Are like gladiator games. Think football. It's.... more complicated. Just liking football doesn't mean you can stick ravens and patriots fans in the same room and expect it to go smoothly. different genres man. People take their teams to heart. And FPS games, players take their battles to heart.
But you can have mutual common ground. and many do. But I see nothing wrong in it. FPS are not building anything. They are what they are. Arenas for the battle of the gods.
Exactly. This game is trying to truly meld FPS and MMO successfully. I enjoyed MAG when it was still online, and despite its flaws, this game should be able to capitalize on those mistakes.
And the football reference is spot-on. It's literally MMO nerd vs. Overpassionate FPS nerd. Both are wanting the same thing, yet both go about their business very different.

look, there are good people on this community, this thread proves it, but i think that dust lacks sentiment, that sentiment of belonging, of new places to explore, things that goes with the MMO, and i think dust needs to give interactions and ways to understanding your factions, and choosing what to fight for, maybe ideals are missing as well, we need something that inspires people, and maybe, just maybe, we as a community should do that, i mean CCP gave us our freedom inside the game, and we see the nature of the human, to complaint and do displays of anger when things dont go their way, CCP just builds the universe around us, its up to us to make it interesting.

Truth of the matter is CCP will do what they want, when they want, and how they want. I've yet to see a player credited on a significant development change, even if it was done in the the same proposed manner. It may be your idea, but CCP codes it and you can bet your biomass ass that they're going to take credit or claim it was part of that invisible road map. The people that don't regularly post on the forums are the Dust 514 community. We're just a dive bar full of bitter vets and trolls with nothing else better to do. Oh come on. We are not 'brats'. We are consumers who complain about a poorly made product offered to us under false advertisement. Honestly, I don't care if I make an impact on Development, I don't believe I will - and if so, as far as I am concerned, it's CCP's funeral and they can do as they please. I will however be heard otherwise, I am just folding in. The game is free. The products you buy are what you can really feel entitled about, which is basically just the micro-transactions. The vast majority of the game you did not pay for, so feeling entitled doesn't make sense. You can feel entitled about the various packs, the value of aurum, the usefulness of various aurum items, because you payed for those, but not other stuff.
Oh rly? I spent $60 - I believe I have paid for everything this game can possibly offer. Moreover, I paied when in closed beta, spending money on merc pack that was promised to be reimbursed on release - we know how that one went. So I was paying back then to support efforts to develop a game that CCP promised. Instead I am stuck with what Dust is now to far from the game CCP said they were making. I know that I was not paying for 'a pack' of things that don't even exist in the real word. To state the latter would actually be the thing that makes no sense.
Oh, sht! I just learned you can make a signature! Thanks, CCP! Forums are getting better!

Just to reply to OP quickly.
It was close to being a good community, player numbers were low and attitudes adjusted to value each player.
It still can be but the time is not right.
Dust must extort EVE.
That would be truly unifying.

I like my FPS communities. It's just like any gladiator game/sport community. Boxing... Football... MMA. My enjoyment in FPS games is competition, so it's cool to be around like minded players. Has that good old tavern feeling to it. Yeah, you have some jack asses, but that's true in all communities.
We are a tough lot, but every player is a warrior by their own right, and gets respected as much. To get **** talked by another player just shows you got noticed that much by that player. We can talk **** about our game as much as we want, BUT YOU CAN'T DO IT.
We share some tactics and advise, weapons of choice, but their really is not "For the moment weapons" Every one plays with their own gun skill, and with the weapon they are comfortable with. So you see a large variation of weapons on the field.
We talk about previous FPS games and those battles that were epic. And we QQ about close battles lost. We are maybe just as passionate or I dare say more then any other genre. We don't intentionally go to build a community like mmo players do, because our bonds are made and strengthen through FIRE AND BRIMSTONE. Battles won and lost are what builds our community.
I wouldn't trade none of FPS brothers that I've met here or there, for anything. even the ones that QQ more then others. lol |

Don't take this the wrong way but .. telling people to HTFU and welcome to New Eden breeds resentment and dislike .. this attitude is what drives so many good people into being abusive, negative and generally complaining and being unhelpful

As a somewhat newer person to the forum, I can see how some people get torn down into spitting rage at people. In one way, the 8 billion posts on the same thing make me kind of mental. There is a search feature for a reason, but it makes me even angrier as its mostly a cry for attention. Anyone new will freely admit they are new and when pointed in the right direction, often follow the trail and quietly disappear. For the rest, their way of existing in this world is to whine as much as possible in as many different threads to do nothing else but create a name for themselves among the community:
"I know there is a post already, but..."
STOP THIS.
And, it's always almost in a negative light. Negative attention is attention and for most people, its the quickest way to get attention.
Even for those who are level headed and expressing good and welcome feedback, you start to notice repeat names. There is nothing in this game that drives players to this forum. Sure, there are a good number of us, but you have to admit the names you see repeatedly make this seem a very small world. Dust on the PS3 is so isolated and disconnected from anything that would drive a user to the forum. No documentation in the 'welcome new player', no direction (i'm assuming based on what it's pumping out) from the academy and even on these forums, 'join this chat to learn', taking people directly out of the forums and back into the isolated game.
Hell, I don't even think the forum IS the place for the community. Transfer of knowledge, training up newer players, leveling up skills, learning to strafe, ideally shouldn't be done by providing a user with walls and walls of text. I feel like half the good training guides (which don't get me wrong, I love them) are a complete turnoff. As a new user, would you really want a 'welcome to the game, here's your manual) feeling? Especially when you're going to be killed repeatedly in a pathetic attempt to grind anyways?
There is no way to interact with teammates other than in a setting of risk. No training servers, no 'just fun' play settings (race tracks for vehicles) hell, even dummy shooting competitions. ANYTHING to get the 'not now, my kdr matters more than friends' out of our heads. Now let me go flaunt about it till someone else can pull out a bigger d*ck and we can call each other cheaters all day.
