I played with a new guy and watched his entire experience through his first public match.
He spawns in Mcc and takes a big look around first skirmish ever. He walks the whole way to C and starts to hack. An Lav races in at full speed and out pops a proto heavy and mows him down.
I can tell what he's thinking oh well I am just gonna go back and get him!
On his way there he gets proto sniped walking from the mcc back to C. So he spawns in the ground spawn and carefully works his way across the street. As he is focused on the fight happening near D he get's smacked by a logi Lav.
He probably thought to himself dang shoulda looked both ways!
Spawns in ground again to get into the action dodges the patrolling lav to walk into the fire fight he's made it to some action. A well cooked grenade is thrown over the top of him and bam he is done!
Figures well I'll take my chance with the sniper. Walks the long way around to B evaded everyone's attention and is so excited to help the team with a sneaky hack. Starts hacking everything going great then BOOM Remote explosive.
Finally decides well I'll just be a sniper and shoot from the ground spawn. I might have a chance at scoring a kill.
The whole team is there with him in a nice tight bunch. Then Magic beams appear from the sky and kill everyone on the team for the final clones. I'm sure WTF was definitely uttered.
Then after the match I felt bad that I just made this game horrible for him...
Then moments later I realized that was myself 7 months ago. My only thought is keep it up kid you're gonna make it here if you want it. I don't hate proto stompers they are the goal to be and beat. Goodluck guys. New and old its a hard life being a merc in NEW EDEN.

So...you made a new player's first non-Academy game hell because your team was Proto'd out to the nines in a random game? Well done. I'm sure they will thank you for such an enlightening experience.

As much as it sounds like you are trying to relate to that poor blueberry, you are just as much a part of the reoccurring cycle that is protostomping: start out new and protostomped by players who have been playing awhile, then set out for proto gear to stomp anyone in your way (which also includes the inexperienced players).
Save that 'pat on the back' speech 'to stick with it.'
Trying to make yourself sound like the little guy is pathetic.

I did. He talked about how, eventually, the little blueberry gave up and began sniping because all of the Protostomping on the other team. He also talked about how that was a 'good thing' because it would be a drive to get better...not just, y'know, quit because people are asshats and want to be the big fish in the ever-decreasing little pond.
I said he was on the Proto team, that was a mistake. Is that really the issue? Not the fact that he said, "I don't hate proto stompers they are the goal to be and beat." Protostomping is not something to aspire to: it's something that should be eradicated by removing tiers, which are only detrimental to true balance.
This story is nothing more than a truly depressing tale of how the game is utterly unenjoyable the game can be when you're faced with a bunch of assholes in Proto gear going up against new players. |

I think the point is that he respects the guys efforts when clearly outmatched. If more guys would see what Greasy saw (even though it's around them everytime they play) that is what will make the difference.
Hammer them in game, send an email and invite them to run with veterans for a few matches. Give some advice on suits and weapons...take 10min to teach a newberry a little something in your squad and their odds of sticking around the game are much much higher. |

That last part is great; however it was not said or implied in the OP's opening statement. REVERTING to sniping should never be referred to as a 'good tactic.' He just sent the little bunny on his way to the wolves' den.

I'm not shocked at all that alot of you are hurt about what this game is. But you are all and will be guilty of the same actions at one point or another.
If you slam me about it fine but you are part of the problem too. Gonna turn in those core upgrades for a fair fight?
No your not I don't care if people proto stomp or not it never stopped me from wearing militia gear or basic. IN FACT I took more joy in the game realizing that my wimpy gear was taking down good gear and that feels good.
If you want your game to be a no work for it quick shooter this ain't your game pal. So either appreciate how it works or stop crying.
I'm not here to listen to your down trodding of people who worked hard as hell and took their lumps to have that gear.
I tell every new player I teach "Hey be prepared to die ALOT."
Ever tried to teach someone who has no idea how to play? You couldn't keep them alive if you had them in the best squad in the game.
You gonna forget everything you know to just walk up and start shooting at their mcc and completely ignore your passive scans?

LOL Even when I get proto stomped it is just another obstacle to overcome. You have the right to proto stomp... you've put time and energy into building up that much SP to do it. It's a toy that anyone would gladly play with given enough SP and ISK to use it. DUST's version of a sports car.
But every time I get killed by a proto the thing that immediately runs through my mind is, "You couldn't have killed me in advanced?" If you have to run proto every match to be as good of a player as you are then you aren't actually a great player in the first place. How many less kills would you get in advanced? How many more times would you die? You mow people down with your proto weapon, you receive little to no damage, and to top it all off you run with your other proto stomping buddies in a horde. I will purposely run militia gear in matches just so I can learn how not to die in it, because if I can avoid death in a crap suit then imagine how beast I would be completely proto. I would be unbeatable; you would absolutely 100% not be able to kill me. So, proto stomp all you want and have fun while you're doing it. You're not going to be running advanced any time soon regardless, so my objective will be to work around you. Adapt to survive.
Every time you proto stomp you should send an automated message to the people that you've killed,
"Hey. Sorry about the stomping. I hope you understand... I'm just not good enough of a player to kill people in their basic and advanced suits without it. (Gulp) They scare me." - Said the elephant to the ant.
If you're going to be bad, be bad with a purpose.

On board with Greasy and Thor 100%. This is New Eden and it can be a b!tch...but you can get better and eventually compete with the folks that were hammering you in the cool black suits when you first started playing.

That was me too, for the first few months.
Damn I was dumb.
Sniped standing looking at the scenery.
Run over by a murder taxi (for at least a few spawns in a row). For a while I thought I had a target painted on my back for them to aim at.
OB'd to oblivion and not even knowing what an OB was.
Getting ganked by a bunch of experts running proto gear and officer ARs. Game after game after game.
Getting killed by a scout when I was using an assault drop suit. More times than I'd care to admit.
Spending skill points on stuff that was completely useless for a noob. A harsh lesson.
Getting shredded to bits by REs and grenades.
Getting killed by running into the redline, thinking I was a flanking ninja.
Trying to throw a grenade and blowing myself to smithereens.
Realizing that a bunch of the mods I was using on my dropsuit didn't work well together.
Jumping into a dropship flown by some guy straight out of flight school. The view was nice for about 15 seconds, then kerpow! Hit by some BFG that blew us to kingdom come.
Worrying about it in the forums and being told to HTFU.
Aaaaaahhh. Heady days.
I'm just glad Tac Com found me, dusted me off and gave me a chance to run with a great corp.
If your newberry sticks with it, he'll be ok. He just needs a mentor.

Just so you guys know I have real life friends I want to bring into the game. I can't lie to the and say it's gonna be fun.. I tell them this game is like an RPG you might walk in an area where the monsters are easy enough to handle and then you might be dealing with the final boss on your first step out of the tutorial.
What's the difference when you lose in this game than in an rpg? You actually grow, don't lose anything, and inherit the desire or the lack thereof to beat the boss.
If you guys can't handle that I'm sorry. I'm an old school gamer where the grind is always tough and you might back yourself into a corner 50 gameplay hours in just to have to restart the whole game.
No I don't have sympathy for you guys who don't see it that way. The reality of what CCP's Idea for the game is centered around this. You guys are playing the wrong game if you can't get over it I warn you now. If they intended the game not to have that effect they would've made it so. If they don't care then it's irrelevant.
In closing respectfully get off your high horse and make another post about how proto stomping is a problem in FEEDBACK and REQUEST. Where people who are looking for innovative changes to improve the game are going to go look.
Don't bring your crybaby attitudes to me or blame me for being a part of the problem. Wanna blame someone blame CCP.
You know I do have one more point to make... You are condoning cowardice and mediocrity. Says alot about your character.

You know I do have one more point to make... You are condoning cowardice and mediocrity. Says alot about your character.
Please tell me how Protostomping is good for the game. Is it because it makes players HTFU? Is it because it's something to strive to do themselves? I do not understand the notion that utterly destroying a new player's morale and having a very real chance of driving them away from the game (which is severely detrimental to the game's overall health)is actually a good thing.
Certainly, there are some with the grit to push through and keep fighting, but they are definitely the minority. I think you'll find that a lot of the people who dislike Protostomping are not in favour of twitch-shooter mechanics either: DUST has a lot of promise as a thoughtful and tactical shooter, yet it is currently all about whether you Protostomp or have mad gun game: there is next to no actual tactical thought, the game does not reward the most effective team because bad, illogical mechanics (WP for Orbitals, for example) reward mediocrity and cheap...I don't want to call them tactics, they are more like gimmicks.
At the end of the day, Protostomping is the equivalent of ganking in EVE but there is no foil to it. In EVE, you have to manoeuvre to avoid the wrath of CONCORD, but the Protostompers in DUST simply whistle merrily as they drive every casual gamer out of the game. Sure, there should be areas that don't cater to casual gamers: inversely, there should be areas that don't cater to hardcore gamers. This is New Eden, where life is harsh for sure but at the end of the day this is still a game and there are elements of the playerbase that abuse the current state for personal satisfaction that is ultimately not fun for a majority...assuming that Protostompers have not driven away so many people that they are now actually the majority, anyway.
I'll close with this quote as to why your viewpoint is horribly flawed:
Grease Spillett wrote:I can't lie to the and say it's gonna be fun The simple fact that you're unable to describe the game that is DUST 514 as fun, because of the likelihood of Protostomping, is a terrible indictment.
I don't know why I bothered with this, since Protostompers and Proto-apologists alike rarely care about the actual health of the game...
And FYI, I have a solid core of good people. I enjoy playing with them, there are some very good players and we rocked pretty hard in some of the tournaments despite being a small, non-hardcore Corp. Do not assume that people who complain about Protostomping are all scrubs: a lot of us just want the game to be healthy. |

I'll close with this quote as to why your viewpoint is horribly flawed: Grease Spillett wrote:I can't lie to the and say it's gonna be fun The simple fact that you're unable to describe the game that is DUST 514 as fun, because of the likelihood of Protostomping, is a terrible indictment.
Your first question I already answered so I didn't bother to read the rest of your rant. Read the post don't be stupid.

All you did was look at one piece of my point and start to plug away at the holes in it. If not taken out of context or misunderstood nothing in the post should make anyone angry in the first place. Hence send it to feedback and request.
Also you mad bro? yeah you are.

Foxbat you know me. Why would you say this? I go to the academy with militia gear when I get a new recruit. I don't any other time.

@_@
Pretty much the same for me Grease. When I was hear I was stuck trying to using my mind over gear to bridge the gap between me and them. I still do that. Jump onto enemies with an SMG and slaying them, bouncing grenades on a wall after baiting a player into walking into it, ducking and shooting the feet of a merc while they're at a Supply Depot, outsmarting the enemy in whatever way I can...
I don't know, I didn't read anything about "Proto Stomp Away" or whatever has everyone's panties twisted but rather don't make it easier on the players since going through the same hardships made you the excellent player you are now.
I sound like an old person but if we make it easier on them, wouldn't the players just become soft and rely on their gear ANYWAY? I promise you that if I didn't get stomped by team work and realized the difference between a Standard fit and a Proto, I wouldn't be the calculating ****** I am today >.>. I'm sure a lot of players wouldn't be. Sure, we need to make the Academy better so it helps players adjusts and have easier to understand instructions but at the core, do you really want to make the battlefield cushiony for newcomers? People will fret until the game is as easy to dominate in as COD or Battlefield and we most certainly don't want that.

This is my training corp alt. I have threads in recruitment and spend hours typing the same message over and over. 0% tax and pro tips.
I run a raven suit with a gek. 2 enhanced shield extenders militia plate and rep. nothing else.
I make about enough to spot a recruit 300k isk upon joining. I take alot of pride in this. It is a way to make the game better.
I don't care that I get proto stomped in matches when I just made an alt to support a guy through the academy then supported him through his first couple of matches. It is out of my control. I just keep it real for them and explain to them this is the way things are.
I as a 2 mil sp character solo down more proto and advanced gear than I ever imagined I could. I don't even have passive sp going on this guy.
Anyway I play this game more than most people in the top 100. I have no life but dust at the moment.
I know what I am talking about and when people come at me with the intent to belittle me I don't laugh I feel bad for them.
Because they have no answer to the key of my success which is intelligence, patience, and determination.
So when I see you crying on the forums I know it's more than that. You've actually shown me that you are an incompetent, lazy crybaby. In a fake and real world. Can you just fake it for me so I don't have to worry about your life too
Obviously somebodies alt.
