Flix Keptick wrote:I have been wondering lately. Why do people skill into fotms? Does it make them feel better knowing they are using the best gear possible? I mean, what challenge is their in using (usually) much better suits or op weapons. Does it create an illusion of being better?
The way I see it, is as a crutch... It makes the game boring, seing everyone use the same things. It is also a complete waste of skill points since they usually get nerfed to hell by CCP. Oh, and one last thing: no one will remember you as a good player, ever. People get remembered by using hard to use weapons and kicking ass with them.
So, to all you fotm users out there, why are you doing this?
Edit: (ok, there has been a bit of a misunderstanding) the players that were skilled into the current fotm before it became one should not feel included in my rant, I was adressing this post at players who skilled into it because they knew it is the current FOTM
How else can they prove that they are "elite" if they don't take every advantage they can?
Really, all they prove is how they're no self-esteem scrubs who want to convince themselves of their own worth with performance in a video game.
It is pathetic and should be discouraged at every turn.

FOTM chasing happens more on the macro scale than with any kind of particular character or motivation.
Large numbers of people will always gravitate towards the path of least resistence/highest success.
FOTM becomes more severe, the worse actual imbalance is and handing three quarters of new players one AR variant and a SL instead of anything else at the start of their career isn't helping either.
It's mostly a systemic issue. Competitive focused players notwithstanding.

So by FOTM are you all saying only a certain number of players can skill into a certain weapon or dropsuit class?
I propose to elimate FOTM, because apparently it is a bad thing, that CCP make it so that whatever race you choose you can only skill into that race's weapons and dropsuits. FTOM problem solved. |

What everyone else here already said. If the point of the game is to get the most kills, then it makes sense to spec into the FOTM.
But I don't see that as Dust's main point. It's just my opinion here, but I see Dust's point as being a very in-depth shooter that requires strategy and careful planning and execution. To that end, I specced into the one weapon everyone and their grandma was laughing at.
The Nova Knives.
Back in the old days of the Codex Build, before Precursor, before Chromosome, before Uprising, the Nova Knives use to be so damn weak that no one took them seriously. They were butter knives basically.
1. You couldn't strike at all without fully charging them. And I mean COMPLETELY charging them. 2. You couldn't sprint with the charge held without exploiting some glitch (we still can't). 3. Damage was miniscule at best. 4. It was only a weapon for the LOLZ.
It wasn't until Chromosome that they finally started to shine. But we still couldn't sprint with the charge and hit detection was a major problem. Uprising 1.6 brought about a positive outlook for the knives, but they are still far from perfect since the recent hot fix was merely a temporary measure by CCP until 1.7 comes around.
The nova knives are currently the only weapons in the game that take the most amount of skill and dedication on the part of the player. Nowadays, us ninjas get a lot of respect for being knifers because of how hard it is to get a kill with these things. After all, we are bringing a knife into a gun fight here.
CCP, thank you for hotfixing the knives. But please make sure they're at their full potential in 1.7.

No offence but this is a joke . Who apologizes or explain themselves for wanting the best equipment ( The U.S. , China and the Russian armies don't ) so they can perform at PEAK levels and with the UTMOST efficiency . This is like a lot of threads ( Now that my PS3 is being serviced I check the forums more and a lot of these threads make absolutely NO since and sometimes I think that they are written by people who are bored , with nothing else to do or by people between the ages of 8 -12 ) that I see more frequently and it's sad and a waste of time .
It's offered to those and only those who can and do PUT IN the hard WORK and EFFORT that it takes to acquire said gear . Work and effort so it's not like the same stops after acquiring said gear because OTHERS have that same access and THEY WILL achieve the same , NO QUESTIONS ASKED !!!!! Their are several jobs in this game notably kill or be killed , make money , achieve success and efficiency among others . Why is THIS even a topic of discussion ?????
You seem to be a person who has played this game for some time ( just looking at the likes that you received even though that actually means nothing but at first glance ... ) so what I am trying to understand is , why are you trying to make or give someone a " guilt trip " about wanting to achieve success and being proficient ???? Already I'm seeing threads like this more often , like this will un encourage anyone from wanting something that's an option ( I can see it now , just get rid of it . I am convinced that the mass of this game is full of whiners and crybabies ) and something that one can only acquire threw HARD work and effort .
WHAT CAN EVEN BE CONSIDERED " FOTM " ...???... that term is thrown around more than an American Football on Sunday's , just like something that " OP " or when something needs to be " NERF'D " or now it's what does and doesn't deserve a " RESPEC " . Ah ... the internet age ... more access to useless knowledge and useless terms also the " over using and saturation " of terms as well . Some people need to learn when a term is appropriate for the circumstances . I'm done reading these forums if I see another waste of a data stream and I'm sure before the night is over I will .
DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE 1.7 DIE ALREADY !!!!!!!!!

Been using the MD since early Chrome, continued to use it when they sucked at the beginning of Uprising, continued to use it when the QQers complained about dying when they were buffed, and is still using it when the QQ died and everyone is now using Aim Assisted ARs(again).
And there isn't anything wrong with this. Why the hell should a game punish the player for using the best gear available at the time? |

I spec'd into Gal logi ScR's and MD's as soon as I got my SP refund at the beginning of uprising. I considered the Cal logi for how powerful it would be but I preferred the Gal logi for its extra equipment and the equipment PG/CPU reduction skill. So I find it ironic I get hatemail for using the gal logi when I originally chose it opposed to the FOTM.
However I think most people who spec into FOTM are the type who wish to win but don't want to win with innovation or tactics but by copying the most successful hoping it will be easy. Hence the QQ when the nerf hammer falls suddenly easy mode isn't so easy and their precious KDR is at risk.
TEST signature please help me think of a better one.

I've had laser specced Prof 5 from 1.3. Scr specced to adv the day they were released and last month got it to prof 2. Specced Nova knives prof 2 the day Minnie scout was released. Went prof 3 flaylock shortly after the FOTM hit with Tac Ar + Cal logi. SMG had prof 3 from 1.2. Sniper rifles went prof 3 right after SMG.
I have Adv Minnie assault Proto Mk0 light frame Adv Gallente scout
Other than the Flay I don't think any of my gear is FOTM. Scr is definitely going to lose some popularity due to the RR and CR coming out.
To answer thread, I think people spec FOTM to compete, stomp, stroke E-peen, and to maintain a false sense of fun. Although a very few spec FOTM before it was even FOTM.
