Oh yeah... hardcore. You have an aim bot that kills dudes in 3 shots with your OP AR. Pretty hard core. You are the definition of hardcore. I played AR for the first time since closed beta the other day, no sp into it, no experience with ADS since I am a shotgunner, AND I was using a scout suit... I was top of the charts going 14/3 10/2 etc...
New Eden is so hardcore, all you have to do is hold an AR and the game does the rest for you.
Doing my taxes myself is more hardcore than New Eden. |

Like I said, this month was redeemed by its "Everyone Get your Proto-Stomp On" SP events. But after a month of people blowing their ISK, let's see how vibrant it is, and how much more they can handle.
Dude you are CPM, the forums are yelling "Fix it!!!" and you are basically saying HTFU. You are amazing at your job. |

PVE won't be this games saving grace.
Matchmaking from the BEGINNING when player counts were STRONG would have saved this game. There's only so many times you can spend an entire game behind the redline before you quit.
You still get stomped on playing solo. And you still ONLY come up against randoms whilst playing in a group. Scrambler rifles and armour-tanking are now out of control. TTK equals about half a second for starters and 1 second for ADV, 2 seconds for PRO and heavy (stacked).
I'm also going to stop playing. I wonder how many people that makes in this thread alone!

I want to see DUST good one day.
I know CCP won't give up and they have to have hearts of gold and wills of STEEL to keep going through the QQ.
To be honest here and to come down-to-earth it's not in CCP's best interests to throw themselves to the lions.
I wish they would make threads, then read the feedback and not respond unless in the form of another thread. Commenting on specific issues does more harm than good. Anybody who reads the forums should be able to see that.
As for updates, it's all too behind the scenes. Keep an eye out for dev blogs though, I reckon there is a lot more in 1.7 than people think. They just chose to outline the vehicle overhaul as a focal point because it was the cause of mass QQ.
The roadmap is there, the skill tree is there, the game is deep and complex yet shallow and abrasive at the same time. What I mean by abrasive is, if I keep on rubbing this dirty lamp, it will become clean and a genie will grant me my wishes. Perhaps a strange descriptive term for a video game.
What with all the different things you can do in DUST it's sad to see most games come down to a crap-shoot of who's abusing the cheapest of cheap tactics.
One day I'm sure the game and it's weapons and maps and roles will be balanced, but right now there's not enough to keep me and others hanging on.

Let's face it... this months SP payouts were pretty huge. Triple SP, 3 top games 3x Warpoints in SP all month, and now Carnage is going to be bloody Carnage.
November was CCP pretty much paying people to keep playing Dust. |

Being that I was guilty of being one of those proto-stompers, "get a leg to stand on" is probably a sufficient answer to my post here.
But I'm not sure it is Proto-stomping that is essentially ruining the game. No matter if the weapons were completely balanced across the board and we all had the same amount of health, it would still amount to the 1337 vs the N00B, as every FPS has.
No, I think the matter of PvE is touching on the right solution. The simple matter of the fact is N00Bs, as much as anyone else who plays Dust, have no other options. You play Pub Ambush, Skirmish or Dom, or GTFO. PC is for the organised Proto-stompers, anyone else who has a crack at that can also GTFO.
So what do the solo, or small group, lower end SP players get to do? Sweet FA. The only recommendation I can make to the Merc starting out is join a MASSIVE Corp. But even then, at this stage of the game, don't expect to get a go in Planetary Conquest.
Where are the Corp Battles promised?
Where are the Drone Battles?
Where are the Markets?
Where are the Officer variants for EVERY weapon in the game?
Where are the maps that are meant to blow our mind?
Where are the new Game Modes?
Where is the one SOLITARY comment on Dust 514 being on PS4?
Seriously, I think the OP is on to something. CCP is focused on fixing bugs (which is good as it was a bug that pushed me over to leave this game), however there is nothing new to make me see it worthwhile coming back. Proto-stomping lone wolves in pubs is just sad to do nowadays, and PC requires time away from your RL for little to no ACTUAL reward.
CCP, give us a comment and give us SOMETHING to look forward to.

Really what do you expect ???? The same about the vehicles . Talk about respec's and you would have people talking for days . Talk about scouts or logi suits or nerfing items and you wouldn't get the people to stop with random comments .
The problems are that : 1* Very few people who play this game even care . 2 : Most of those who do care are just tired of feeling like their voice doesn't matter and it's not even herd . 3 : CCP is going to do what they want to do ANYWAY and most of the time it's the EXACT opposite of what you are speaking about and asking for . 4 : Most are just waiting for that , " I'm just fed up " moment then they know that they wont even care about the forums , updates , reinstalling or this game in general AT ALL . 5 : They feel like it's a NO WIN fight anyway . By the time something is done , a lot of the things that brought them to Dust and helped them to " fall in love " with the game will be gone and replaced with a " watered down " version of what that core ideal or items and things were , it won't even matter anymore .
Let's be real .... how many times has this company admitted that they made a mistake and placed the mistake back to fix and solve that problem . They will " quick fix " whatever that " mistake " was and add their OWN take on whatever it was and to be honest , it won't be the same .
It seems like the " powers that be " have a problem with that , meaning the constant pe&!s measuring to show " who's boss " and " who's game this is " is really sickening . We all know who OWN's the game and who develop it's content . Nothing that could save this game would work because you can't even get them to admit that " there is a problem " in the first place and even so " they " will administer " their " form of triage .
When you are asked for feedback and you feel like your being ignored , it's only a matter of time before those who were asked begin to shut down . That's what your looking at now Jak'Saan . It's sad .

Face facts, as QQ as it is for those unwilling to stomp back or to waste ISK or who can't run proto yet, your player base is dying. As New Eden as it is to say HTFU, your bottom line will be better served by keeping vets and encouraging new players to stay past the first match out of academy. When will you address proto stomping. Say anything. Stop leaving us hanging. If you don't care, then tell us so we can move on and leave the forums like we left the game. If you realize it is a problem, there are lots of great ideas that your user base, intent on keeping dust around and fun, have contributed. For example. Maybe it could at least get the ball rolling. Sad day for me last night, I keep wanting to give Dust another chance, but last night I finally did the big delete to save me from wasting my time anymore. Will be checking forums for release notes, but as a closed beta tester, Dust was supposed to be my last ps3 game. So, you mean like the two new DevBlogs over the past week? Those don't count as communication? On the topic of "proto-stomping", I've never really found it to be that much of an issue. I just revert back to cheaper fits and keep pushing. I think a lot of the people playing this game are taking it FAR too seriously. As Pyrex was just saying today, a system in matchmaking to prevent putting squads against randoms would probably clean this issue right up. We still haven't heard much as far as details on the backend of Dust for 1.7, so that might be part of the information they said was still yet to come. If you dont think its an issue your not paying attention, and though Im cool with pyrex and subscribe to him on youtube, lets be real, hes part of the protostomp core, hes part of the problem so his opinion is somewhat biased dont you think? I mean hell go find a video where hes not in proto gear. If you want to pub stomp in proto thats your right, but if you dont realize how unhealthy it is to the new player base your simply misunderstanding both the reality and gravity of the situation. All im asking for is a server with a meta cap. If you still want to use proto go ahead. |

I remember the hope I had for the game Brink. Splash damage were gonna deliver an open world, new universe, ground-breaking gunplay, and a customization system that would put Mass Effect to shame.
While I met some of the coolest gamers ever thru that game, the execution of Brink was abysmal. And while we held on for many months for something that would change the game entirely, it never came.
Then Dust 514 came along, and hope started anew. THIS time the Developer was also the Publisher! And now they could turn this game into ANYTHING the players dream it could be.
1 year, 7 months later, and so far the dreams belong in a pipe. Again, I've met some of the coolest gamers I'm ever going to meet, but again I haven't found the IP that is gonna rock people's world for years to come.
Honestly, the only way gamers are ACTUALLY gonna get the game they dream of is by finding some good coders and designers, and starting a Kickstarter Project that gains the hearts and minds of the public. Star Citizen may be the first to deliver what many of us seek, but who knows.
CCP have nailed their "dream job" in Eve, Dust is/was an experiment, one that gained incredible loyalty from it's players, yet never delivered what everyone had hoped for. I'm still gonna be watching these forums for a sign of something awesome, but CCP won't be receiving any more Merc Pack cash from me any time soon. |

Why do people keep linking a chart that shows relatively stable player counts as evidence that it is dying?
There was a peak on launch, as there is with every game. Numbers dropped off fairly rapidly then there was a plateau around 4k for a while, then another drop and now we are stable at around 3.2k. PCU might actually be climbing very slightly in the last month or so.

Well they have two options:
1) say nothing, hope playerbase sticks around, or that the bleed-out is low.
2) say that they are working on it (i.e. soon)
#1 would be the option they would choose if they either have no idea how to fix it, or they have no intention of doing so. This would mean either it won't be fixed or it will be a long time. They are willing to take the chance on loosing players.
#2 would be the option they would take if they actually saw it as a problem and had a direction to take.
I guess that leaves us to decide which option it appears that they have taken, and act accordingly.
I do think it is hilarious how not only has this not been mentioned, but also CCP has stopped trying to tweak the battle academy. You would think by now that CCP would realize, with such a short battle academy, that pubs are the new player experience.

Okay, you can do this with 5, 10, 20, 30 mil SP but a new player cannot. They just die, get no kills, get frustrated and leave forever for greener pastures.
Sixie - shoot me a note in Dust and I'll get you hooked up. You can apply for OSG (we like recruiting newer players that are fighting to get better) and if you are a casual player that's fine we have plenty of those and we have a pretty serious FW and PC division if you become interested. We run a serious training regime for new players and can give you a lot of information on how to optimize your SP and play style if you want.
I was in a very similar position as you were. I played for about a month and half and was pretty tired of getting my a$$ handed to me. I was in a match against OSG, got a gg mail after the match and checked out the corp. Having allies and consistent connections is a pretty serious indicator of whether you stick around or not.
Whether you are interested in joining a corp or not offer stands to get in touch and I'll see if I can help you out. |

F2P Player number graphs start off low and increase gradually until it plateau's and then gradually declines and depending on how good the game developer is they add new content that keeps the vets coming back to play the game whilst keeping a constant stream of intermediate and new players .. bought and paid for games plateau at launch and in the 1st 2 months until it begins to decline as more and more people complete the game/get bored of it ... and then sometimes a new version of the game is introduced and the cycle repeats (think COD/Battlefield)
The fact is the player counts are getting steadily lower .. having half as many people online playing the game as their were on release is a serious issue for a F2P game .. the player numbers should be higher as more and more peopel have played the game and stuck around ..the fact is DUST has one of the poorest new player experiences of any F2P game .. and it simply cannot keep hold of new players ...
Therefore the current cycle for DUST is one of new players not staying and playing the game and vets getting bored of the game .. with no new players to replace the vets who get bored or the people who decide to go play other games then the player numbers decrease ..

I find it interesting, the proto stompers say "numbers look steady to me" and they continue to proto-stomp. They don't even look at new player retention, because to a proto-stomper, their biggest cheapest thrill is owning noobs. You are right, as vets leave, the noobs getting owned by the protostomp won't stick around to fill in the gaps. right now we have 2000-3000 consistently active players... that's nothing... I've been to churches with higher attendance (4000) on a weekly basis. If people start leaving and no one fills in, you will notice it very quickly.
with so many great games out there right now, and the HUGE curve it takes to get enough sp to level the proto playing field, proto stompers will be the end of this game. |

I'd say one of your points relates to matchmaking and balance in general, which visibly needs tweaking. For the 2nd part - the new player experience, this can only be served by PvE content, as it's the only way you can present a tutorial in a structured, controlled manner. I harp on about this in other threads when people talk about the "new player experience". Anything, and I mean anything apart from PvE structured tutorials where you initiate the basics of the game to new players is a stop-gap measure because it is simply not possible to implement structured scenarios in a fluid, unpredictable multiplayer battle.

Me too... as much raging as I am giving it, it had great moments and I still get the itch to pick it up again, it's just that I don't because I know it's not the same game anymore. It's like a bad breakup, lol.
Fact is, I've played other games that were crappy, and then I put them down and forget them. Dust is different. It was great, could have been greater still, but it went in a bad direction. |
