If I set up 2 Triage Hives, I'm casually tanking Sniper rounds while supporting the team with Assault MD fire in a Logi suit. So if a heavy is supported, you will not remove him unless you one-shot him. |

guess i could go after them with an assault drop ship...but oh wait those are gone too.
Aramis Madrigal wrote:You'd think I could get a little love from a dropship pilot . I'm fine with having to hit a head shot and then a quick follow up shot to kill a heavy. My problem is that without a Thales I'm left with two bad options: 1. Adequate damage to do the job, but a ROF that is too slow (charge). 2. Adequate ROF to do the job, but not enough damage. (everything else). This really isn't much of an issue in anything but PC.

I've yet to receive sniper support while flying in a dropship. That's not to say that it's not useful or doesn't happen, I may just have bad luck.
Anyway, the reason I'm not supporting sniping at tower forgers is because I'm expecting a forge gun range nerf similar to the swarm launcher nerf. This means that they'll be "area denial" rather than "map denial." This would mean that a forger up very high (such as on the towers of the Line Harvest map (the one with the six towers)) wouldn't be able to do much from up there besides some point minute defense of the nearest objective and shooting a dropship that gets too close, so it wouldn't be too useful. This, plus the reduced splash damage and hopefully a little shot inaccuracy will make forge sniping much more difficult and, in my opinion, not much to worry about.
Dropships aside, the goal isn't always to kill the forge gunner, but to keep them from forge gunning (i.e. backing away from the edge). If you get 2-3 hits with a Kalaakiota tac (one head shot and a few follow ups), that forger is going to back away until his shields and armour regen, which, though it doesn't kill him, effectively nullifies him, which is the goal.
So I'm in favor of the heavy ehp buff (if they make a few small changes to the forge). Real heavies, the ones that get down and dirty on the frontline, need this, and I'm not going to let a few scrub sniping wannabes ruin that for them.
(As an aside, it is virtually impossible to kill a competent forge gunner with an assault dropship. At proto missiles, it takes GëÑ2 direct hits to kill just the frame, and more than 4 for splash, not to mention that he'll be shooting you (and only takes 2-3 hits to kill most dropships) and knocking you around, taking up more time, and the fact that you can't really see over the nose of your ship at what you're targeting. Your best bet is to just runaway and hotdrop a few infantry to take him out, which is what I'll be doing until my beloved Python returns to me. )

One shot and 3 complex damage mods on a charged sniper rifle will put fatty in the grave with a head hit.
Two, sometimes three shots if you only hit fatty's tummy. But fatty is as slow as a guy with extra chromosomes, so I find that the charge times aren't usually an issue.
Then there is the Thales, the love of my life. She can ventilate fatty pretty fast.

nope it doesn't, the only charged head shots that kill heavies are currently the militia ones with sub 850 hp, and after the next change that will be nobody |

With the heavy boost coming up next week, this might become more. :S

Aramis Madrigal wrote: P.S. Will 3 headshots kill a bricked out heavy with maxed skills? A Kal tac with full skills will do ~275-300 damage (times multiplier) with 3-4 complex damage mods. I don't play a heavy, so how high can you get their eHP pool with the incoming buff? I've heard the current max eHP is 1595, without the upcoming buff. So 3 headshots is not enough. :S |

in the future it will just be faster to make them immune to sniper fire 2 ***** 4 complex light damage modifiers thales sniper rifle pew pew they dead didn't even take head shots oh yes and pro. 3 4 complex damage mods & a rare officer weapon isn't a fit that many people have laying around. The Thales is vastly superior over the other sniper rifles.

DS 10 wrote:My Proto suit will have over 1450 HP. You do the math. OK, here goes, with a proto Kaalakiota sniper rifle (meta level 8), no buffs:
- 1,405 HP / 194.5 damage/shot = 8 shots (suppose you don't regenerate)
- time between shots = 7 x 0.6 seconds = 4.2 seconds
- reload time = 4 seconds after 3 shots = 2 reloads = 8 extra seconds
So, getting rid of you would cost 8 shots, 2 reloads, 12.2 seconds and 27% of the sniper's ammo. Unless you regenerate, or the sniper misses. On the other hands, 5 consecutive headshots will do as well :)
Guess you've got better things to worry about!
By the way, this also debunks this statement at the Dust Wiki: "Unless facing a high-level Sentinel Dropsuit that is armour tanking, a head-shot will always kill the target." |

Yet it is the only fit that is really viable for sniping in PC matches. I'm not concerned that one of my chosen specialties requires a high degree of accuracy to be viable and I don't want to be able to one-shot everything. My chief concern is that my being effective is predicated almost entirely on being able to protect my small and slowly diminishing stock of a rare officer weapon. At the highest end, effective health outpaces sniper rifles, marginalizing their ability not only to kill, but to influence behavior. This is part of why forge sniping is so attractive; it has true alpha strike capability. Again, I don't have a problem with this, but it seems reasonable that snipers should be one of the counters to man portable anti-material weapons. Man portable heavy weapons have always been an attractive target for snipers (i.e. carrying the mortar wasn't a really popular job in the VC).

Heavies shouldn't be killed too quickly by sniper fire. Still, I think proto sniper rifles need to have more alpha power.
That why I'd like to see a more one-hit-kill oriented sniper rifle, with a very long reloading time, charging time as the Charge, and as powerful as the Thales, but with only one shot. Kills most medium frames if hit, but once you miss, you won't get a second shot. This would make the sniper more inline with the traditional OHK-sniper, but it would also make the weapon almost useless in close combat and for sniping duels.
Just another tactical choice for snipers.
