Exactly this last generation of consoles were the fist to make online gaming easily accessible off the PC. It will only improve from here with next gen platforms. I think the ideas in dust will be great once they are fully implemented. |

And Blizzard has been hinting that they want to put WoW on PS4. They just don't want the control schematics to work like DCUO's does where you can only cast up to 6 different spells actively without going through menus. But that's also why PS4 added touch screen to there controllers - more options for designers to work with. |

DCUO went F2P... it failed, and when it went F2P its revenue increased by 700%.
I don't know the numbers for FF14, but I can guarantee going F2P will also increase that game's revenue. F2P is the future of gaming on console.
It's working on PC also, but so is sub based games. We'll see how long FF lasts.
WoW? I don't know. I just can't see sub based gaming working out on console... I just can't. It'll take a game that successfully did it for some years for me to give that idea a nod. |

ummm... eve didn't really have much to do either in the beginning...it was a lot like dust in its potential but lack of content...
in a lot of ways eve was worse because a lot of people couldn't even figure out how to move their ship... at least with dust moving isn't a monumental task.
this is the major reason why eve university was created because ccp wasn't telling people how to play their game so someone had to. |

DCUO is currently F2P on PS3... it went F2P after poor numbers.
I suspect every other console game with a sub will head down this same road. 80 million PS3's and they needed to F2P to make more money. There won't be 80 million PS4's out anytime soon, so I suspect some of the games you mentioned will also head down the DCUO path.
I love Elder Scrolls, but I'm not paying a monthly sub of $15 for it. |

DCUO when it first launched wasn't much of a game more then it was a rock paper scissors pvp with a boring grind. Since then it's changed a lot. It wasn't worth getting
And FF14 has hit 1mil+ subscribers.
It isn't that it isn't possible. If they remade FF7 with epic graphics and told everyone it had a monthly fee to work - they'd make millions Lol |

DUST is a lobby shooter, and it will always be a lobby shooter. There's no "open world sandbox" like EVE promised back in the day.

Best comparison ever The comparison was not so much the type of game, but the way in which CCP develop the games and the community's response. Comparison seems quite valid. The community's response? lol Brings me BACK to my point. PC crowd is not a console crowd. Can never, NEVER compare a PC point and click MMO crowd to a FPS console crowd. Night and day. You know this really makes me wonder if PC players and console players are really two different people. I'm a dedicated console guy but I also dedicate myself to PC gaming equally. Where does that put me? Console is majority casual players. I think everyone can agree to that. PC players are more "hardcore" when it comes to gaming, and that's obvious when you're the type of PC gamer that upgrades your PC every few months. People want to tell me, a console gamer mentality is the same as a PC gamer? lol You think console gamers will stick with one shooter for 5-10 years? No. Not the casual gamer, and that's the majority of people on console. FPS are dime a dozen. Hell come November there's: - CoD - BF - PS2 - Killzone - Blacklight And maybe a few I missed out. You know exactly what a console gamer will do after playing BF for a year or 2... that's right, move on to the next. That's the mentality, and that's what a FPS gamer does. Comparing a PC gamer and one that plays EVE to a console gamer that plays FPS is not a comparison. EVE is a niche game, while DUST is not. Simple as that. If by some miracle DUST becomes a niche, THEN you can compare. But for now, this whole comparison thing between the 2 games is a joke. You forget that some of us are forced to move on. If I had the choice, I would stick with playing MAG forever, that game was fun as hell, and there's not been anything quite like it before or since. I didn't get to stick around, because Zipper collapsed and the servers went to ****. Don't you ******* group us all together like we have ADD, you goddamned prick. |

The point here is that the console market is changing radically to the point where even our consoles are changing in both architecture and power. Even the demographic is changing. At this point the fine line between PC gamers and console gamers is beginning to blur. I won't be surprised if 5 years from now the console demographic becomes mostly hardcore rather than casual. |

I was making a comparison as to how your pessimismon us like the EVE players pessimism.
Even if DUST is a lobby shooter, through its unique elements will bring people.
Most lobby shooters have don't have every item be perishable. Most lobby shooters don't have this much depth in skills. Most lobby shooters don't give you nearly as much freedom to play with your load outs.
I don't feel the need for another open world game. As long as we gave things we can do, or be expecting to do soon that other lobby shooters don't do, that's enough for me.
If all my trading has to be done via menus, so be it. You don't see any other shooter out there doing that.
I don't look at the "It's a lobby shooter"
I look at it as "Its a shooter that give you such control over your characters developing and play style, with multiple classes, and territory YOU can own and profit from, with connection to another, even deeper game, with plans to add a market where goods YOU made can be bought and sold to be used in battles where it is lost in every death. "
If you look at the bigger picture, you see how big a thing DUST is compared to the others in its category.
Your right about how DUST is for the most part a lobby shooter right now, but the backdrop is already set for a great meta game |

The only thing those games have on Dust is the core mechanics and feel of the game. Dust has an amazing concept. By this time, CCP will have closed the nitty gritty details that desperate dust from mainstream shooters and will become the biggest shooter since CoD BC it works and it is fun and free. Talking about MAG like it was some godsend. That game flopped after 1.3. If you didn't move on after that you were trying to be a big fish in a small pond... very similar to what people are trying to do in DUST now.

@OP - The forums were similar, however, the big difference is in the two games themselves. You cannot compare the two. One is a space sim on the PC platform. Another is a lobby shooter on the PS3. The PS3 hardware will very soon be outdated. The PC is easily expandable for system requirements and hardware/software. For whatever reason they decided to go with the console when they really should have been developing this on the PC so they wouldn't have to work with a console that is notoriously difficult to develop for.
There is no clear answer, however, my personal opinion is if they keep it on the console the game will fade away to obscurity. Especially compared to other AAA shooter franchises such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counter Strike, Borderlands, Bioshock, Far Cry, Halo, and most likely pretty soon Destiny. Dust doesn't even hold a candle to some shooters that are 5 - 6 years old ffs.
EVE on the other hand does not currently have much competition. It certainly had no competition when it was released cause EA pulled the plug on its only direct competitor(Earth & Beyond). SWG also shed almost its entire playerbase at around that same time when the NGE bomb dropped. However, I do think Eve will be hurt significantly once Star Citizen is released when many of their casual players(anyone probably not locked heavily into nullsec activities) will likely abandon ship. SC has good promise, but we shall see I guess. |

Which costs boatloads of time and money so the point is NOT invalid. And as to having more than just shooting? When is that? 5 - 6 years at the glacial coding speed of CCP. Who says another company who specializes in shooters doesn't come out with something similar since then? That is the problem with future plans. They are not finalized and can change. As of right now, however, Dust is a below average lobby shooter with above average customization and an addictive skill system. Basically thats it. |

However, I do think Eve will be hurt significantly once Star Citizen is released when many of their casual players(anyone probably not locked heavily into nullsec activities) will likely abandon ship. SC has good promise, but we shall see I guess.
The assumption that Eve has no competition is an illusion. WoW is a very powerful and direct competitor. Not in science fiction but in the mmo industry in general. This is despite the fact that wow is sometimes losing subscribers by the boat loads. This is because wow is a very easy to use game catering to a very broad audience. It's so easy that even an elementary kid can learn it quickly on their own. Eve on the other hand is a very involved experience involving the understanding of mathematics, economics, and politics. There is a reason why Eve is often called a spreadsheet game. This means that Eve caters only to a very niche group of players.
On the one hand you could make Eve easier to attract more players, but on the other hand you don't want to dumb it down and potentially lose the veterans who helped establish the universe in the first place. |

While these are all relatively valid points, the OP was just to see if people had the same sentiments about EVE as they currently do about Dust, and whether CCP takes that into account for developing a game. Also, I'm sure they probably have already set themselves up to port Dust to the PS4, since developers likely know when a new system is coming much sooner than the public (CCP isn't so irrational as to develop a game with a decade long roadmap when everyone knew PS4 was going to be dropping so soon).
Destiny and Star Citizen do pose great risks to Dust and Eve, but I think that SC being PC only will limit its audience (just being realistic - while PC gaming is still a lot of fun, developers are jumping ship to more widely used platforms like console and mobile), and people aren't going to just abandon 5 years of playing Eve - they'll probably just play both. Dust would be transformed significantly by a player base that was even just 10K players (which is a long shot at the moment), but that is not very large when compared to AAA shooters. Both games will likely stay niche, since they are generally pretty complicated, and require an adult's view of gaming (politics, economics, fittings, etc.). A lot of AAA shooters just don't offer that experience.
Just because Dust is a lobby shooter at the moment, doesn't mean that CCP intends for it to stay that way forever. Imagine being able to get picked up by Eve pilots, and dropped into a titan in the middle of a battle. Eventually, we should even be able to shoot down Eve pilots from the ground fights (a more realistic addition than titan infiltration, but I dream). |
