Had another thread on the subject but it got locked from inactivity, so I'm making this new one. I'll keep it shorter this time. I want this game to feel more immersive.
HUD boot-up when we spawn. The various HUD elements should turn like 1.5 seconds after you spawn.
Let us see our legs when we look down. Not only does it make sense that we would be able to see our legs, but would also be useful for being able to judge at what point we will fall off a ledge.
HUD wobble like back in the closed beta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt0_dWSyVKI (I miss the old battle song).
Head-shot damage visual distortion effects. Sensors & cameras for vision are located in helmet, so when shields are down and you are hit by headshot, the cameras' vision should be effected.
Blur and ear-ringing effect from experiencing large explosions (like vehicle explosions) from close distance. Great suggestions, as always. I'd like to add meatier visual effects when small arms fire hits the terrain close around; dust sprays, sparks and ricochets when they hit metallic surfaces, chunks of a wall being blown off and spraying your visor with debris for a fraction of a second before your visor burns it off with the suit-incorporated laser wipe. |

I love it all, though I think asking for more graphics assets at this point is a tough request. Especially with the PS3's limits in terms of how much they can pack in, I'm not sure if they'd want to do racial HUDs and holograms at this time.
With regards to legs, that might be, in part, an engine concern, I don't think Unreal 3-based games generally show your own characters' legs, but I could be wrong. |

Resistance 2 had some great explosions/sound/visual effects for the player. My favorite one was how the sound muffled out when a huge explosion renders you almost deaf. That feeling makes you get the heck out of wherever you are.
Also, MOTION BLUR!
The biggest change from Resistance 2 to Resistance 3 was how pretty everything looked as you were running around. Dashing through the map as it's snowing and having the scenery around you look so realistic as if you were actually there...that's the kind of stuff I'd like to see.
Weather would probably be the one thing I'd like more than anything else though, and if it could affect the HUD at all that would be even better. Things like snow falling and the edges of your HUD being partially "chilled", or a dust cloud rolling in that made it hard to see other players from long range (but great for sneaky scouts). Heck, even a really dark map with bright stadium lights keeping certain parts of the map lit up, while the rest is almost pitch black.
My favorite game of all time that immersed me more than anything else like this was Metroid Prime. When you walked through a steam vent your vision would be totally obscured, getting hit by bugs that exploded caused your mask to be covered in goo, the underwater levels made it hard to see very far, as well as transverse (until you got the upgrade of course), and the best part...when something bright flashed in front of your face, you could actually see Samus' eyes reflecting back on the screen. |

The old school combat song! I like the new one more, but I would still like the old song to be in game. HUD wobble!! The distortion effect when the forge gun explodes near you! The old school electronic sight for the assault rifle! Spectate Cam! (that really should be integrated into our games some how.) USEFUL Railgun tanks that can fight at close range!
Oh yeah, all your suggestions were really good too.

I want the immersion to be better as well.
Weather and Atmosphere I would like actual weather effects. Not just retextures and fog. Give us rainfall, from a light drizzle to torrential downpours. Give us snow, from a slight frost to a heavy blizzard. Body and Presence As stated, I want to see my legs. Hearing our merc voices is a nice touch, but let us modify the voices. My guy sounds like a *****. Make the sounds of me running "heavier", I want to hear my equipment as I move. Scouts should have a nice soft footstep. Assaults should have a nice equipment stomp, where you can hear your gear and equipment BF3-style, and Heavies should have a good heavy stomp, with the sound of their mechanical servos as they move. Allow me to run and slide, and vault over objects. Let me break into a roll when I hit the ground from height. Give me takedown kills for sneaking up on someone while crouched. Let us reppel, down the side of walls and towers. Let us shoot while we reppel. Allow mercs to actually sit on the outside of tanks. Scramble my HUD and vision as my armor takes heavy damage.
Let me holster my weapon when I haven't shot at anything for a while. Make my merc curse and swear when his weapon overheats. (scrambler explodes? "fvck!*) Make enemy mercs scream, "grenade!" when i throw one at them. Make the mercs shout when they see a tank, "MADRUUUUUUUGARRRRR!!!!!!!!!!"

I will add more if I think of more, and if I like a suggestion in the comments. I love all of these. Personally, I can't figure why the HUD bounce was removed anyway? It was very slight, but did wonders for making you feel like you were looking at the inside of a helmet.
If you combine all these features with the visual leaps and bounds they've made in Uprising and since then, the game would feel a lot more "real".
Somewhat unrelated, but when we get more weather effects, an animation - canned if need be - of water running down your helmet is a must. It's just plain cool, and ups the immersion factor even further. |

The hologram wristwatch, the one to hack things with. It should be more immersive. If you look at what the merc is doing, he is just twisting here, pushing here, then pushing there. none of that matters. What matters is the circle in front of you that tells you about the hack itself. Maybe put that circle in the wrist watch so we can look at it there. |

About the glow on nova knives, I agree, the edges are supposed to be full of hot plasma according to the early weapon dev blogs. I suggested they make it so in one of my previous threads on the subject of immersion, but nothing came of it (as usual). Nothing will likely come of this thread either, previous ones on immersion also made it to the weekly updates thread, but no changes. I don't see any reason to expect even the simplest changes implemented.

Don't know if anyone has pitched this yet but there is currently no real difference between an incapacitated and dead clone. So I say straight up cut the feed from a dead one. Black screen, RIP. Fin. |

If we want to add immersion, I think the ragdoll needs to be toned down about. Some mercs get brutally killed and then they do the splits when the fall, or their butt is in the air. It looks silly. I want it to look like "damn, that's a dead clone!", not "lol, look at his body" Also, it looks weird that a dead clone then turns into a dull color. The jump is too drastic. Like guy above said. If you get terminated, kill the feed, you shouldn't be looking at the stats...You are dead! |

If you black out the view from your eyes and have the stats on a black screen, I think that'd be fine.
The reason you get those stats after the clone is dead is because the tech we use is Sleeper based, and allows you to be digitally stored until you get dumped into a new body, rather than the Capsuleer tech which instantly zaps you into another clone.

Couple more ideas for immersion. When you reload, your character looks at their weapon. When you climb ladders, the camera moves appropriately and you can see your hands climbing the ladder. And when you drive LAVs, you can see your hands turning the steering wheel and when you crash the LAV, the camera shakes. |

Much love to all the others suggestions, though. :) Well I don't think he means looking all the way at it. I actually think it might be neat if the character would just look slightly to the side, not too much. Gives a better impression of making sure you don't mess up the reload, but maintaining situational awareness.

While I was watching Judge Rhadamanthus's newest video on YouTube about camera angles for Dropships, it got me thinking about how Dust could really benefit from some actual cockpits for aircraft.
I mean, look at EVE: Valkyrie, for instance. Back when it was just EVR, the graphics were actually of a lower quality than Dust, yet they still had a semi-interactive cockpit with your character represented in it.
If you figure that Dust vehicles use enclosed operator seats with displays fed by cameras on the outside so as to not leave the pilot vulnerable like with a physical canopy, you could theoretically have a first person view with a bit of image grain and some creases in it to give the impression of a set of wrap-around displays. Also important would be a basic set of gauges, or at the very least and artificial-horizon of some sort to allow the pilot to remain constantly aware of their aircraft's orientation.
The biggest issue is the necessity of a free-look option for aerial vehicles.
As one example, the older Ace Combat games would only allow you to view from the rear around to the side of your aircraft unless you clicked and held down on R3, at which point it would reverse the view and allow you to view from the nose to the side.
This same principle could be applied in Dust, where R3 would allow you to swing the view all the way around the ship in any direction to get a quick view of your surroundings to check for hostiles or obstacles, and then releasing it would swing your view back to the front again.

I want to say they added the ability to adjust the transparency of your HUD (also with the ability to go to 100%, thus effectively removing the HUD). I think it's buried in the options somewhere. Though I could be wrong; maybe I dreamed this. :\
But yeah, even that is only a partial edit; not full customization like you mentioned. |

Also, to be able to lean over rails to shot down and to look around corners without exposing the entire body. Small stuff like that would add a lot of immersion value for me, being able to move the character more like a real person.

Yeah, I particularly like the idea of a "leaning" based system for shooting around corners or over ledges.
I think we can all agree that a cover system would not be a good idea, but even Battlefield now incorporates the ability to lean around corners to minimize exposure.

It would make weapons and objects nearest to the player screen look a little bit more real(well as real as Sci-fi weapons can get anyway)with the added DOF effect. Well, I guess I see where you're coming from on that first one, but depth-of-field isn't exactly the best visual idea for a shooter. It's the same with motion blur, really.
They both look pretty, but they have a negative effect on your ability to spot and prosecute targets, which is after all the point of a shooter.
