Can we get a less intrusive and annoying way of conveying this?
Perhaps for as long as you are on somebody's scanner, there is an icon of a little radar dish pulsing in the middle of - or next to - your minimap. Notably pulsing, not flashing. Nobody likes flashing.
Any other/better ideas? |

How about having it appear in the corner with the other messages (make it a different color so it is more easily noticed) as well as add a short ping when you are scanned. |

It could be an animation on your minimap, would make some good sense, or in your HP area. IF the minimap had a glowing red ring around it when you get scanned, and like a ring that was associated with a failed attempt. |

doesn't matter much once you've spotted them you have 30 seconds to track them down, usually just highlighting them for the whole team will mean other snipers will have a bead on them.
if you scan a sniper theirs a good chance he will die soon. |

How about a low SP/ISK/CPU/PG module that picks up when you've been scanned? Should be easy to implement and has a lot of advantages:
- mercs have the choice to use it or not - gives scanners the advantage that most mercs don't know they're being scanned - added goodies to play with - a definite boon for those who want to be sneaky - enables you to move when you're spotted, or someone's coming for you
I'd use it! As a scout, I have to run for my life once I'm spotted! |

I thought that was kinda the point? It annoys me that only logis can use a scanner combo to effectively locate hidden targets.
I say this as a scout who is currently skilling to avoid ADV activate scanners without mods...so I guess I'm content either way.
It'd just be nice if there were more 'techniques' you could use to get the most out of a scanner besides being a ballerina.
Anyway, I sometimes only notice the 'You have been scanned ************!' when I'm dead - it appears on a part of he screen I'm not paying attention to (compared to radar, scanner recharge and HP) - its as bad as the OB notification.
The radar distortion idea sounds good - but a full screen disruption would be ok - actually no it would be OP on the side of the scanner now that I think about it.
Perhaps a ratio between scan strength and the victims precision - if precision is high enough, they know they had been scanned. Likewise if dampening is far, far better than the scanner strength, the user gets 'no margin of error'? |

Last I checked the scanner was for finding enemies that fail to prevent your scan, not used to pinpoint enemy locations who prevent your scan using multiple scans.
Yan Darn wrote: It'd just be nice if there were more 'techniques' you could use to get the most out of a scanner besides being a ballerina.
Honestly, that needs to be prevented somehow. Maybe make it so targets are only revealed once the scan is complete in the direction the scanner is currently pointing at?

Wouldn't work unfortunately. Scan precision is incredibly difficult to get down. I'm not even sure if you can get precision below the normal proto scan levels. |

Not letting them know at all would be an interesting concept, after all it doesn't make sense for suits to let the clone know they've been scanned but not to let drivers know they're being locked on by swarms, double or nothin ccp! I think if that were to be implemented then have people who block scans get a message that there was a scan attempt, then they can warn the rest of their squad to scatter.
Other than that I don't have a problem with the message, never gotten in the way it just makes me freak out and run away screaming like a fat guy from a salad, appropriate since I've been running a couple heavy suits lately...lol

An active scanner should light up the user like a well light house, particularly the twirling ballerina variety.
Also this should increase your profile so swarms can lock on the scanner user.
Its like a submarine ping. It shows them the environment but it also shows them to the environment.
Passive scan by definition is only receiving. Active is sending out a bunch of energy to find everyone around them. Logically it is the same as using a flare gun at night.

Fighter jets got the equipment for it. My suit doesn't---by default. Let me skill into counter-measures? Scanner on the hunt, OK. Give me a mod to throw a ping on the map when *I* am scanned. You see me and whoever is in range, but I see you too (only me though, and well, anyone else you scanned that happen to have this equipment fitted too). While you hunt the cluster, watch your six? Honestly, I'd be paper thin scouting profile damps, dmg mods, and a counter-scan equipment slot, but I'd love it with a shotgun ^.^ It's up to me to be cautious as to how I use that info. If i'm a scout, I can't scan back if my equipment slot is dedicated to counter-scan gear. I won't know if you're a solo hunter or if you're intel for a coming squad. If I don't get stupid, I may can take a few of you out from the rear. Either that, or I die or move along quietly. Of course it's all moot if your scan skill kung fu is greater than my scan-avoidance fu, so there's that for potential balance. Do you amp up with mods to chase down that rare counter-scout or play the odds? Can your squad afford that or would you prefer to run solo? etc., etc.
Maybe throw in a proficiency skill to max to boost range, or a third tier skill and/or proto level that can notify me and my SL (no one else) of scanner's location. Same restrictions as above, but at least the SL could decide to go defensive, attack, or clear the area. Yeah, I'm over-simplifying.
Either way, I'm of the mind that I shouldn't be told that I just got scanned unless I'm skilled to counter. I DO kinda like the idea of a static fluctuation over my HUD though. I may not understand wtf is going on for a moment, but sooner or later I'd realize, "This static must be some kat's scan signature! oh ****. I'm being scanned!?" without any real intel on the matter other than my HUD just spiked and popped. Get the hell out of Dodge or prep for incoming in the blind, ya know? While I'm a sucky player, I do think things are a bit spoon fed here :) Really though, I love the idea of interference spikes to signify "something" may be going down without any more clue as to what that something may be. Even if we all just got random interference from whatever. I'd love the panic with that. ....OOOOOh, that could lead to a new form of e-war'ish item like ghost mines that project interference to scramble reds' HUDs temporarily to mimic scans or other tactics down the road.... bla bla bla.
OK. I'll shutit now. =)

Eh, yeah. I get you and agree. I hate to say it, but I kinda feel scanners should be limited maybe to just scouts or something. That plays out a bit nicer in my reply above. Idunno. I know that's a can of worms too, but if so, that would be a potential bump to scouts while opening up interesting scan/counter-scan roles within the scout class. Just spit-balling though cuz you're comment about the buff makes total sense and I totally missed the obvious =\
