I find it funny when they talk about nerfs cause the death of Dust when in fact they themselves probably causing it by making people rage quit over proto stopping. you can say HTFU as much as you want, skill will only get you so far when you're facing people with twice as much eHP as you when you're fresh out of the academy.
What MMO ever has had newbs on par with vets? None, at least in dust you can kill still? All other mmos will have the top tier guy one hit the newb before the animation happens lol.
We got our proto by playing so why the f**k should that change to compliment impatient scrubs, just quit the game if you can't invest the time or roll out passive sp for a few months

People complain about proto because a single squad of it basically means that the team their on is just "IWIN".
Only scrubs that rely on twice the HP and 25 more DPS complain about newberries who get killed in half a second.
Earn your stripes you say?
You got you're mega amounts of SP when everybody had similar amounts of SP. You, have never played a protostomp on the receiving end.
Right now, the first thing I do as I enter the war barge is look at the teams.
That way I can decide if I want to be KDR padding, an MCC potato, or if the game will actually be fun.
May I ask, since I can just hear it coming, what is the counter to proto gear?
Shotgun to face? Broken.
FG? People are bitching, so its going to get nerfed into the underworld in 1.5/1.6.
Ranged weapons? The proto just laughs at you as it harmlessly walks into insta butchering range with a duovalle.
Explosives? Proto laughs as you feebly try to touch its shields, then it melts you with the duovalle.
Fluxes? Proto laughs as you attempt to push through its armor, then it melts you in a third a second.
Vehicles? Proto throws volley of AV nades, walks away admiring the 100 on his screen.
REs? Try walking and getting that close to a player to wait a few seconds to detonate. By then your already paste.
The only really valid tactic is sniping, but then you need a charge to hurt the proto in any real amount to make him die.
tl;dr, Protos are invincible to tactics not involving proto weapons, so its the newberries with STD gear that just suck against the 900 eHP proto suits.
tl;dr for thread of those agreeing with OP, so bitching, I like seeing my KDR like this.
This is why I'm just gonna play PS2, and BF4 on the PS4, following Christmas, until DUST gets a port over with MMing. |

Good. Then you won't mind playing people who have the same grade of gear.
Having to fight better geared players all the time is not going to keep a regular influx of new players. They'll quit before they play the grind game.
I'm casual and I'm not going to grind more for better gear faster to have decent, fun game. Only PC represents the meta game where it is a free for all and may the best geared team win. |

The only real problem with proto in pub matches is the ridiculous amaounts of ISK most veterans got when all their stuff was sold. Now throw in some corps that dominate PC and that have vast income from PC and you have the current situation where people don't care about a loss in ISK.
This was meant to be a mercenary game but I have never played a mercenary game where the mony you get has such a little impact...this hole game should be built more around ISK and going positive in ISK than anything else but right now ISK means nearly nothing for those proto stompers.
They are far more concerned about their holy KD and the WP. |

I think there is something to this argument but it shouldn't completely negate the fact that those with protogear did have to earn it, even if it was easier to earn back when everyone was first starting. I wouldn't say it's unfair but I would say those who may throw the "earn your stripes" argument around should be aware that it isn't nearly as impressive to earn them in the closed beta rather than in uprising.
This is another issue that seems easily fixed (or at least improved) by a universal SP cap. All the people from the beta need to do is cap on a weekly basis to permanently be millions of SP ahead of new players. It's not exactly practical to say that one could "catch up" but it would at least remove the impossibility of leveling the playing field.
I am aware that this would allow those from the closed beta not yet at the universal cap to level up even faster until the reach the cap. Still, I think this is more fair than letting them reign supreme forever just because they started earlier and not because they played more.

The core problem with the gap between proto and std is that it makes NPE a nightmare.
Allowing a player to develop skills that make them viciously powerful is a fine model for MMO's but doesn't have any business being in a FPS which relies heavily on PvP competition. Pitting a king cobra against a mouse is not competition, its punishment. |

Let me preface this by saying that I'm new to Dust. That being said, I actually don't mind getting wrecked by guys in better gear, because somewhere in my future I can see the glimmering star that is the promise of accessing some excellent fittings myself one day. It feels like a trial by fire that forces me to play smarter and cleaner while, at the same time, fostering in me the ability to channel my frustration into action. I don't expect any mercy, people should bring their best to battle, anything else just wouldn't be, well, mercenary. One day I will have better gear and by that time, thanks to the beat-downs of my early game experience, I will have learned how to play the game efficiently. Though, replacing my busted headset will probably add to my game experience sooner... I have to get around to that. |

Honestly, I have full Proto and I can fit and afford to run full Proto in pub matches continually for a long time.
I still choose not to, because in a pub matches I want to win through skill, not equipment. All at stake is my KD, and that is worthless, especially since I'm a logi. I can casually run with 5 friends in standard and advanced and once we run into 5 other guys wearing their best most expensive proto gear...... the fun dies. It doesn't matter if you earned the gear, or bought it with aurum, it is an unpleasant experience. Even if we still win, we have nothing to extra to gain from the added challenge. I can't imagine the experience for a new player.
Tiericide needs to happen, and game modes need to be expanded, because there are no causual modes as long as people proto pub stomp.
Now for all of you who run proto, I on the other hand understand that if you can afford it why not wear it ? This is new Eden and I support your freedom to run in whatever you choose to run in. There aren't many places to run with your best either, PC is...well PC, and FW is still a mess.
CCP needs to fix this whole set up. One pub stomp is all it takes to turn off a prospective new player. Until CCP finds a fix we can expect stagnant numbers. I just don't want anyone who does go stomping with a full proto squad to think they are helping this game in any way. It's only natural to try your hardest for some, even if it means driving away the competition so no hard feelings on my part. |

This is why I posted on this thread. I really think it's not that people want the bars lowered, they just want a way to play with people on their level. This does not mean take protos away from those who have them, but develop a matchmaking system that does not put recent academy graduates with less than 1 million SP against people with 10-15 million SP. It's not about lowering the bar, it's about giving people a chance to enjoy the game without facing the best players on a regular basis.
What I don't get is why those with proto equipment get so defensive about their playing style. In general they are at a great advantage and seem to get upset when people acknowledge that playing against them is a mismatch (i believe someone called it punishment?). Regardless, I'm really relieved to see that some people from the big corps like Tallen enjoy the test of skill rather than hazing new players with proto gear. Hats off to you sirs. Good to know I can actually compete with some of you vets in pub matches and not wonder if it was just the suit that beat me. |

I don't think playing against someone in a proto suit is a mismatch only because I've lost proto suits against militia and I've taken out proto suits in militia. Is it an advantage? Hell yes. I don't go into a fight looking to be disadvantaged. I shoot people in the back if I can. I out range them. Out damage them. This whole idea of a fair fight with tanks, heavy suits with miniguns and weapons with vastly different damage profiles seems asinine.
This isn't the wild west where we walk 10 paces and shoot each other. We don't line up and take shots at each other like its World War I. The goal is to eliminate the enemy, period. I can't even tell a new player from a vet in militia, should I stop and ask before shooting them?
I agree about the matchmaking needing to be adjusted, but as far as I'm aware, that system is being developed currently. Until then all the threads about the subject don't do anything.
Finally, since when does being in a proto suit mean you won't get stomped by the other team? I guess I'm playing a different game because having a proto suit hasn't stopped me from being on the receiving end of a well run corp stomp. |

If people like OP have convinced themselves that those discussions are about their proto gear, that concerns me. It's about everybody's proto gear - I don't want extra slots - I want variety and specialisation.
The fact that it could help new player retention is merely a bonus - frankly, the game is going to need something more than balanced matchmaking to attract and keep new players.
If OP is talking about 'whiners' - well I'm a scout, and I do giggle a little knowing that one (well two...) shotgun shell to the back of a protos head or baiting one long enough till they are alone in the middle of a field of blue....well, they'd have to kill me literally a dozen times over to cause me the same of amount of ego/ISK damage.
It...come to think of it...'Proto-griefing' is what keeps me playing these days...
Either that or I'm a masochist...I mean I didn't spec scout a while back, it was literally last weekend I decided to purposefully gimp myself... |

I should've been more specific. You're right, it's possible to kill protos with militia gear. It's possible to stomp a squad of protos with a militia squad. I have probably used less than 30 prototype suits in pub matches but I've killed hundreds probably. In general though this rarely ever happens. This is what I mean by a mismatch. I understand that playing tactically can be more useful than a powerful suit but when two people turn a corner I'd be willing to bet 90% of the time the proto will beat the militia.
As far as the different roles different suits play, I think that's my favorite part of the game. I like that a scout can take out a heavy if they utilize the speed and stealth. I also like seeing an HMG take out 3 medium suits in a choke point. But for the most part I think that people complaining about prototype gear generally mean the medium suits, or at least I do. There may be 3 or 4 heavies on the proto stomping team but they are usually avoidable. It's the proto assault/logis that are dangerous and hard to avoid.
I don't get the wild west part and don't see anything in my posts that have suggested asking people how long they've played.
I'm glad to see that CCP is doing something about matchmaking, but my main reason for posting is described in my first post about the two types of arguments going on about this subject.
From what I understand, proto stomping is the term used to describe a squad or team that uses proto gear in pub matches against people who can't afford it. Basically using their equipment to do the fighting for them. I understand that some corps would still kick my ass in a pub match based on skill but other times I wonder. Of course people using proto suits are not protected from other protos. There is no longer a clear advantage.
You seem to have taken away from my post that I believe protos are invincible and unbeatable. No on is invincible and no one is unbeatable. I am merely acknowledging that people that don't have/can't afford proto gear being placed against those who do/have proto gear need to be much better/luckier to win a gun fight to compensate for the mismatch. This mismatch removes the challenge for those with the advantage and thus the test of skill is lost IMO.

Well put it this way, when you are on a team with a handful of afkers, a squad or twos worth of obvious noobies (Militia stuff) vs an enemy team with squads of full proto gear.... well It hardly makes for fair battles.
Yes they are entitle to do what they want, but we all know the state of the game and matchmaking balance. So while we have this situation, proto squads in pub games is pub stomping as far as I am aware. Hell have you seen how many people use officer weapons in pub matches too?! Its crazy but like I said its a good challenge.
I just wish there was battles for militia and standard, and battles for the protos and others. Any sort of basic matchmaking balance would be nice really. |

Blaming the players for doing what they do is the definition of scrub. The devs have to supply the fair game, the players shouldn't have to "meet the acceptable standard".
