Yes they do. Until you hit advanced, you have to work to manage heat (something that should be fixed, if anything is changed about LRs). You also have to make sure nobody gets into CQC range, and that you aren't going to get hit by every sniper.

Ramming needs to be fixed. I've seen tanks (and my own standard LAVs) get destroyed by both suicide rams from the other team's starter fit LAVs, or by getting hit by careless blueberries.

That would indeed be very useful. For now, just learn what every turret looks like, and you should be able to pick them out on the fitting screen. I made sure the HAV I'm using has a blaster on the front, and a railgun on top of the big railgun.
