You generally get a 2-3% effectiveness per level for equipment There are race/suit specific bonuses, I can't remember what they are off the top of my head you'll have to check in the skill tree under (ermm what's it called) dropsuit command? mayb...

Playing defense is one of the thankless roles but helpful to the team depending on circumstances, if you do it a lot bring hives if you don't already. Oh and yeah just move around a bit you'll be fine

This may have been mentioned already tl;dr but hit core skills first; shield, armour, electronics, etc... Build up all the little bonus stuff first it'll give you more ability to play w load outs. If you start putting SP into new suits and weapon...

I would go w armour/shield tanked assault suit, better speed and still high hp once you start adding mods.
