Battle academy already was barely sufficient as a training grounds for the new players, it hardly prepared them for the real games. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about CCP changed battle academy so that it is the same map every time, it's only ambush, there are less clones than the normal ambush games, and the maps have been made smaller by moving the redline closer. CCP I really hope that you did this because you guys have something else in the works because new players are the only hope this game has of surviving. |

um.. when this happen? I was on with my ALT last night, to help an old clan mate who wanted to see what dust was about. And we had skirmish. And really? lavs hit and run in the academy? why the hell for?! No proto's in there! lol |

Yeah, I really don't understand the logic on this one either. Won't this just make the transition out of Academy much much more rough, when all of a sudden the player count and map size double, in addition to running into advanced and proto suits? |

I'm guessing that it was intended to lengthen time in the academy by reducing the amount of wp available in early matches. It gives new players more time to adjust to the core mechanics, even if it does kind of screw them tactically. Maybe it's just a stop gap measure? |

That makes sense but it just seems like a back assward way of doing it. I think they should've just raised the WP requirement to 20k WP.

I just heard it from my recruit... THE ONLY ONE I COULD GET TO STAY!!
CCP this is a BAD IDEA what this does to her skill tree progression is PUNISH her for being too comfortable with working in the distance.
e.g. Before today:
Her Skill Tree: Sniper Rifle Operation with some SP on DS Upgrades
RESULT= She could go 12/4 in Skirmish and Ambush OMS <-----GOOD IDEA (she can hold her own in battle YAY!)
NOW:
Snipers are NOT close range weapons therefore have NO PLACE in the Academy over other weapons meant to be close to medium range...
RESULT= Battle Academy PUNISHES anyone who's not out there to GANK the Enemy(IS THIS WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM DUST?SRSLY??)
CONCLUSION
--- Your metrics should come up with the following results in two months when you decide to do something ---
New Players skill ONLY into Medium to Short Range weapons (Gotta GANK 2 WIN)
Murder Taxis are back!! and business is GOOD!
AUR items HAV's + LAV's sell by the triplefold (You like that don't ya you derty money wh*re) **
Player Retention, if they aren't willing to dish out some CASH for AUR, goes down
IF Battle Academy didn't resemble the ProtoStomp Reality back then NOW People are unprepared and BAFFLED by the fact that now they HAVE TO squad up and capture/destroy 3 things THEY HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE:
- objectives - installations - CRU's
P.S. Who needs to fly dropships ANYMORE?!?!

I think battle academy should include all game modes in their fullest form, not just a gimped version of ambush. And I may be wrong but I think team chat is automatically turned on when you join a battle as long as you have not activated any other chat and have chat turned on. |

Still thinking about how bad this move was. You guys went about this the wrong way CCP. I'm sure you are trying to lengthen the time spent in the Academy but you done made it worse. What you should have done is instead made time spent based off of SP and kept anyone under 2 million SP in the Academy. Keeping people in a 8 vs 8 Ambush map isn't very good at having them learn the game either. If Ambush was the only mode and there were no Dropships, Snipers, and everyone was just Medium Suits with AR's zerging each other then yeah 'ok' perhaps but that isn't the case. |

If they want new players to play more battles that are shorter they should consider adding skirmish or even domination with 75 clones and an MCC that has 1/10th the HP. At least this way the battles are short and you can actually get an idea of what the "full game" is.
If I were just starting out with DUST 514 and only saw Ambush I would think, "wow is this a scifi version of Counter Strike I played in 2000?" |

Posted this in some other threads, as this seem to be a hot topic ;-)
I agree this is a odd decision. The new players have to experience all (most) game modes DUST has to offer, to learn things like hacking etc.
With that said, why not introduce a "ladder function" in the academy, instead of doing 8 vs 8 Ambush and be thrown at the (very) deep end when you hit X SP/WP.
It would work like this: - Fresh created character ("0" SP /WP) - only 8vs8 Ambush available -- Getting some experience (X SP /WP) - 8vs8 Ambush + 8vs8 Skirmish available --- Progressing further (X+ SP /WP) - 16vs16 Ambush + 8vs8 Skirmish available ---- etc
This way the newbie get to learn everything in small doses, and when the get to hit skirmish they already know the basic shooting mechanics... |

I tried Academy today for hte first time today and it is no way to get noobs started. Where's the tutorial on how to play and the training for the other modes?
For crying out loud, I saw people calling in tanks and dominating with them because no one knew how to take them down.
PS: It is also WAY TOO SHORT. I literally completed Academy in less than 2 hours. I was like "WHAT?! That's it?!". |

I saw some tanks in academy battles and I have to give the newberries credit because some of them were pulling out AV. Whether these guys were alts I can't say but I hope they were legit new guys actually adapting to the changes on the battlefield. |

So that's whats going on. Hell I created a character yesterday that was sniper biased , today logged in and it had reset, well ok no probs I had only played a few games and about 5k wp. Today I sign in get an update an nothing but ambush maps.... which I hate, loath and always opt out off. At the 4th ambush map I was counting ppl in the holding room and figured there must not be enough new players to fill a skirmish map . CCP do you realize the impression you are sending? The game looks dead, not populated, as in hey no one is playing this. The impression is further re-enforced when it is the same map, over and over and over again. Around the 9th time I got an ambush map ( the same one every time, really?) I quit and logged back on, figured I was in some kind of ambush map loop hell, but no ambush again. Knowing full well that ambush is not the only map offered I went online and did a bug search, luckily I found this thread.
Sneaky Fletcher describes the circumstance of a new player well, they play only ambush , then suddenly get thrust to game modes they have not seen before. Now maybe it's a progression thing as Regis Blackbird describes and after suffering through enough ambush maps I will see a skirmish battle ( but with 8 players? wow that is seriously going to look like no one is playing the game!)
Sirs you need to present an image that this is a grand , vast, living and evolving online FPS game. 16 players trapped in a small map may not be the best way to showcase this. In one game that I stuck around long enough, ppl were leaving the battle so that is was 6 red and 7 blue, well 6 and 6 by the time I signed out. Seriously, log in and look at the holding room, 8 characters in this big room, two giant screens in either side ( and look I can see I made the board, though I do not have a s-i-n-g-l-e kill )
BTW, how did CCP communicate the change to players? I missed it. You did let new players know about this right... er right?

By "communicate" I meant ....did CCP explain to new players that ambush is only a very small sample of what the game has to offer. I have been playing DUST for 2 months now, I have an idea of what the game offer. Imagine your fist time playing and it's round after round on 8 on 8 on the same map, if you have an ALT I welcome you to play, try to see this as a new player. You quickly get the idea that a shotgun and quick maneuvering is the best game style, which I have to say is...if your only doing ambush against players that don't know the range of a shotgun. |

Just played 13 rounds of ambush in battle academy, below are my raw observations taken after every game. I am not an awesome player by any means and actually prefer to play academy games over the regular games. I find the game play seems better balanced , after all in academy every player is only a couple mill points apart , suit and fitting advantages are somewhat null.
I trust that CCP has intelligent ppl in the payroll, has done some type of group feedback and has decided this is the best strategy to garner and hold new players, I just don't see it working . Maybe if I just grind it out in a form of game play that I do not like for another 7K, I will be treated to another 10K of skirmish play, which I really really enjoy.Perhaps my style of use of the game does not fit into CCP demographics, they prefer I leave battle academy all together and play only with main characters. Perhaps I'll play something else.
16-0 blue 9:02 mark 04-0 red 9:07 mark 3rd game spawn in at 9-0 blue @10;18 ( played for 3-4 seconds recived 34K isk and 304sp) no shots fired 05-0 blue 10:55 mark 0-0 blue 9:22 ( 5 blue on field) 13-0 blue 10;05 mark 0-0 blue 9:17 0-0 blue 8:21 14-0 blue 11:00 mark 14-0 red 10:49 mark Best strategy - shotgun and grenade 15-3 blue 10;15 personal total so far wp 2430 K/d 39/31 - Assist kills are up 09-0 red 10:00 mark - best K/D seen @ this point 11/3 red force top player 04-0 red 8;00 mark personal total - wp2855 K/D 47/39 and completely bored.It was my intention to try and play to 10K WP but this is not fun, mind you I have never liked ambush, so the thought of having to play the same game type for a further 7K of wp just does not appeal to me.
Observations- spawn sites beginning to be predictable- guys group-up and and get taken out en mass by grenades - not running out of ammo due to quick deaths - no variety of game play - no real strategy required - squads are not being formed - there is no real strategy required, there are no objectives, there are no points to rally at to turn the "tide" of the game, at a certain point there is no doubt which team is going to win

So I went and spent a few hours playing Academy alts just to check it out so I could say I put my money where my mouth is. My opinion doesn't change. In fact it gets worse. The same small map, with the same game mode, with the small teams is the worst experience I have ever had on this game. Academy went from being really fun to being the worst part of the game overnight. Congrats CCP! I don't often ***** about much(besides flaylocks lol) but this actually has me mad. When I expressed these opinions in local I was "kindly" told to "shut the **** up" and to "go **** myself" by some self proclaimed Dust "Elite". Yeah, way to set an example for a community guys. CCP you guys really need to do something about this or you won't succeed with this game. That is unless you want others besides the "Dudebro's" as your clients. If I was a newbie and was not already invested in this game I would have quit immediately and not even thought about returning. |
