As an extremely new player (I've been playing for a day now) i'm kinda disappointed with the game so far. I used to play MAG, so I can kinda see what the overall idea of the more advanced game modes may be, and i'm excited still for that. Unfortunately, I've only been able to get into a hand full of skirmish maps, other than that, its been all Ambush (Of the 8v8 variety. I played I think 3 or 4 of the 16v16 Ambush last night before it was, I guess, done away with). You know, I log in, and it says there is 60,000+ people on the server. I go to the battle finder, and I can choose between the single Battle Academy match that's always the same map, and that's it, unless there is a battle under the mercenary tab, which only seems to happen once every few minutes or so, and even if it says there are spaces available, it almost always tells me there is no more room. But that's all fine and good I thought, I gotta learn the ropes at some point, i'll do this Battle Academy thing and get some SP and get a few upgrades and be ready for the actual game. Wrong. More often than not, Battle Academy to a new player seems to be the equivalent of Sandy Hook Elementary to a small child, an unstoppable, brutal assault. It's bad enough when the opposing team has a hand full of players who are fairly top end, but it gets worse when you see (what appears to me to be) a group of veteran players who regularly play together using high end equipment and high end strategy to just mud hole stomp the opposing team of noobs. Now, i'm not saying change anything, cause I have no idea what changes to recommend. I've basically realized that i'm looking at a good long time of getting the ever loving dog **** kicked out of me time and time and time and time again, until I've managed to cobble together enough SP to start getting my head above water. Which is all fine and good, if that's the way its gotta be that's the way its gotta be. I've also been extremely disappointed by the in game community. After a particularly savage beating in an Ambush match (I think I was like 0/17) I figured i'd try and join a Corp. I bounced around to a few Corps to find the same thing each time- Promises of an active Corp friendly to beginners dashed by a dead Corp chat and absolutely no help or interaction what so ever. If i'm joining a Corp I wanna fight with them, not join so I can login to a dead chat room while getting destroyed playing Call of Duty (I mean 8v8 Ambush) by myself. At this point I've figured screw it, from what ive seen i'm nowhere near being effective enough (equipment wise) for a seriously active Corp to want me, so i'll just try and get by on my own for now. And I don't dare ask any questions in the Match Lobby or General Chat. I've got thick skin and all, but the thought of being verbally accosted by someone who is probably 15 years old over my lack of knowledge of a game I've played for a day is not an appealing one. All in all, the negatives I've seen aren't enough yet to turn ME off from the game, but i'm sure for many others its been way to much to deal with. |

It does get better once you start accumulating a good amount of SP and find a corp, but until then it will be hard going. Stay in battle academy as long as you can because the "real" game modes are a terrible place. If you really want a corp go check out the corp recruitment section of the forums, you should be able to find a corp that will take you in.

Haven't tried them myselves, but Dust University is a corp with the specific aim of helping new players. You could try them out. Or, you could join the corp I'm a member of (STRONG-ARMED BANDITS). We have a generally friendly atmosphere, many of us are willing to answer any questions about the game you might have, and we try to get as many people as possible into squads. The activity varies throughout the day, but there are usually at least 10 players active at any given time. I play a lot, but have massive RL commitments the coming week, so I might not be on a lot. If you see me on, feel free to ask questions, request squadding etc.
In any case, one thing to keep in mind when asking questions in corp chat: it could take some time before people reply. They might be in, say, a very even Domination match, which could take half an hour in some cases. It's unlikely they'll even check corp chat during the match. |

I thought battle academy was the first step towards match-making and a better experience. This change seems like ... I dunno, I don't think it makes sense. How does a newbie understand there's more variety and experience it if they can only grind enough WP to get out of the thing that's supposed to enhance their experience?
**** when I started I *chose* nothing but ambush until i figured out wth a null cannon was for. But I knew it was there to be figured out coz I had tried that mode already, and didn't understand it. |

Why do this? Just totally backwards! How the hell are new players supposed to learn the game this way?? No variety or objectives? It was bad enough when Academy ended before, and they are thrown to the wolves. How many times can they go 1-15 and find anything but rage and dissapointment. Do you think they will buy Aurum? We know that wont help them, and they will be gone before wasting money trying to win and have some fun. Fun in the begining, no way. It totally sux for noobs. They really have no direction or clue what to do!!! I recruit players and they never come back. All they say is "i'm so lost help!" Even when I go way out of my way to help them try to figure it all out. Just shut down the the Academy or make it twice as long. Its a practically useless mode now, kids are going to get slaugterd anyway. Options are HTFU or delete. CCP may feel its using common sense. But thats not what I would call it.... This has been explained many times by players. With so many apparent attemps to reiterate these views from the actual players that have to deal with this. Should I care? Personally I'm trying to justfy my 6 months of play time. Whatever/ |

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about CCP changed battle academy so that it is the same map every time, it's only ambush, there are less clones than the normal ambush games, and the maps have been made smaller by moving the redline closer. CCP I really hope that you did this because you guys have something else in the works because new players are the only hope this game has of surviving.
This is why I think that they need advanced player trainers in War academy. Hence my thread on it.
There is no preparation for what's to come, unless they want to attempt a Merc battle that might or might not be difficult. Talk about a wake up call for the noobs

I will say I did a bit of research on the game before downloading, and I had a good idea of what I was getting into when I downloaded it. I did have that tiny, sub conscious thought that maybe i'd just be a natural and smoke everyone right out of the gate, but I knew what I was up against. I know if I grind it out, i'll get there. Never been a CoD or Battlefield fan, but I fell head over heals in love with MAG, and Dust seems to take a lot of those same concepts and push them waaaaaay to the next level, which is friggin awesome. Now of course I've been getting frustrated as all hell a lot, but I keep coming back, cause I know once I actually get to start playing the game, I will be hooked (and I can't wait). But to someone who may have just downloaded the game with no knowledge of it.........you know, i'm not stereotyping here, but I've watched my buddies play CoD and Battlefield, and yeah, there are some team based modes that decent amounts of people play, but a lot of it seems to be (from my perspective) a lot of death match and team death match. Now you have what i'm sure is at least a decent portion of the Dust population who have played one of these other shooters for a good bit, and when you hit them with this Ambush stuff i'm seeing now, you're telling them "you know this style of game, this is familiar, fall into habits and strategies from your past experiences". Then BAM (and i'm guessing at this point, cause i'm still in BA lol) you throw them into a extremely team focused style of play in which you may have to go 0/28 on the kill count to effect the match in a positive way, or you may have to hang out at C to guard it while the next squad gets to go take A, or whatever. I personally think when newer players are accused of worrying about their Kill Count over the team, I genuinely think a lot of those cases are players with no knowledge of this style shooter trying to help out in the only way they now how, which is just find guy kill guy, find guy kill guy. Battle Academy needs to be a side attraction for the hell of it/ another way for SP. The world understands the basic concept of a first person shooter. The beginning of Dust, in my opinion, should focus on letting people know right off the bat "hey, if you're willing to try this teamwork thing out and be open to a deeper, strategic shooter, you're gonna have a good time", and then you give them a super small scale taste of what they will be seeing as they progress, making them more useful and effective once they do start mixing with the veteran population, lowering the stress level for everyone and letting the game really shine. I think Skirmish is a better candidate for gameplay intro purposes, but my knowledge is limited. And being someone who is not at all happy with the proliferation of all these extra little do dads and charges and things you can buy with real money that give you a leg up in games now a days, I must say after getting more familiar with the market it seems pretty fair so far. I was a bit unhappy about the blueprints being a real money only thing at first, but then I realized I have more ISK than I know what to do with, and even if I went and bought blueprints, I couldn't use most of it without buying the suits that let me use high level stuff, and then whats the point? Why even play? I always liked the saying "It's the journey, not the destination". Anyway i'm rambling, case in point: Battle Academy= Bad for learning. More team focus Skirmish type something or other= Good for learning.

Battle Academy should have multiple tiers. Tier 1 is Ambush, where the newest players are introduced to the basic mechanics of the game and get a chance to filter out the weapons they don't like. Tier 2 would be Domination. Single objective, but increased squad/team interaction. Tier 3 Skirmish. This would give Academy players a graduated scale to improve their tactics and control their progression. And with a decent WP count per tier (say... 10,000?) They would have the SP and experience to at least stand half a chance in pub matches, and maybe have the time to get acquainted with the game and the tactics necessary to continue having fun. |

It is not a typo. It was previously 10,000 WP, which many players thought was already far too low. |

Um yeah, 400 WP is way to low. While they got the right type of match I think that WP goal is way too easy. One lucky round and you're out of the Academy. 10, 000 WP is better but maybe 25, 000 would be more realistic. |

Decent explanation from devs of what they're up to
Interestingly, they are saying 400 WP gets you out as that will give the average 100 WP per game newbie 3-5 matches in the academy until they're out.
Anyway, they're measuring stuff, so hopefully that's gonna make things better. |
