I do not know what ringers you're referring to, but we will have some alliance guys with us. I highly doubt we have 16 Se\7eN guys on. No matter, no one in our alliance can be considered a "ringer" in my definition of the word. I think most--if not all--would laugh at being called that. :) |

Anyone outside of the corp are ringers. But again..it's not a deal. I don't care who you guys bring in, I will just alert my guys that anyone could be in the match.
I just thought fight club was your corp only....that's why I asked. Since, I'm not going to be on, I dont know who's going to be on for us but I would've told them to play just Ahrendee, even if we're short. But now, I'll tell them to fill slots just in case we don't have 16. |

There will only be 1-2 "ringers" (why are they called that?) in this match, mainly because we bring elements to the battle that weren't necessarily there before. Our alliance plays a pretty big role in wanting to squeeze the best of the ally players to help progress our ally corps further up the chain. I was also present in The General's PC fightclub match as well. |

From urbandictionary.com, 'ringer' (in the gaming world) is "a Counter-Strike term (used in other games, too) that means a person that plays in a scrim or war against as a member of the clan, but is not actually in the clan."
I've always used 'ringer' as a pro brought in to play an amateur game, like basketball or bowling.
Anyway, looking forward to the battle tonight. Let's have some fun.

No, I don't give two craps, either. But I think this is a good conversation for everyone on PFC to read. I think a lot of people have a different thing in mind when they hear "ringers." I think back to The Simpsons' episode where Burns hires all those MLB All-Stars to play in his company softball game.
Griffey Jr. with the huge head...anybody remember this?
Anyway, now when people are setting up fights on PFC, they know the other team might bring in ringers. So, do whatever you can to have 16 there.
I know we're looking forward to tonight. |

See, I always thought ringers referred to people you paid to come to your aid. ;) I stand corrected.
S.e.V.e.N. is one of the most self-sufficient corps in our alliance, but much of our alliance takes a very communal attitude to play. We all are invested in every match the alliance participates in. I come from the EVE side of things originally, but in my book, a SE7N match is no different to me than a NEMW match, except who has to be squad leader to get us in the fight.
I'm stuck doing IT work at the office. Best of luck to both sides! Fight well! |

The definition of a ringer is simple. A ringer is someone who is not a member of a clan that is participating in a clan battle. Or, they can be someone who recently joined a clan for the sole purpose of playing in a scheduled clan battle...and usually leaves after the clan battle.
In other games, ringing is frowned upon, but in Dust it is accepted. My only thing is that I thought that since fight club isn't about conquering and defending districts, I thought that corps would have full teams. But I guess, fight club is really just about having battles. It makes no difference to me but that's what I thought. So, even if we came up short on the roster, we would just cue how many are online...win or lose. But since ringing is acceptable on fight club as well, then we'll just fill slots if we're short. |

See, but "clan" is a purely non-DUST expression. games with clans don't have alliances. I'd argue that anyone in Top Men is part of my "clan".
For example, I wouldn't advocate any of our players bringing in people from outside Top Men to a Fight Club fight. But inside the alliance, I see nothing different between just one corp in the alliance and mixing corps in the alliance. |

clan and corp is the same thing. I can replace the word clan with corp in my definition and ringer will mean the same thing.
Top Men is an alliance of corps (clans) and, therefore, not one corp. The only way that it wouldn't be considered a ringer is if a battle is set up to be an alliance battle. So, if we set up a match and call it EoN vs Top Men, then players in Top Men in that battle wouldn't be considered ringers. In this case, someone that's outside of Top Men participating in the battle would be considered a ringer. But if a battle is set up between RND and Seven, then anyone not in RND or Seven that participates is a ringer. |

I'd like to point out that games with 'clans' like Warcraft 3 DO have alliances - just because the game doesn't support it doesn't mean people don't do it.
Clan, corp, league, faction, guild - as long as it's player runned and maintained it's all the same and words can replace each other easily. |

I can understand the mindset but definition of ringer still holds. Because you do agree that Deep Space and Seven are separate cops, correct? And if they are separate, then that means one corp rings for another.
But if you guys dont feel separate from each other.....why not merge into one corp? |

What? That's such a fail example. US states aren't "allied" with each other. I mean, unless you feel that NY and California has the same relationship as US and UK during WWII.
When a country declares war on us, they don't declare war on NYS, they declare war on USA. We didn't declare war or challenged Top Men. We challenged Seven to a match that had nothing to do with PC districts.
But I'm not going to continue this further because I see where this is going. You guys are disputing the factual definition of ringers as far as fps gaming is concerned......and at the same time, I didn't even care that you guys used them. I just asked if you guys were going to use them so then I know that it is ok for us to use them if we were short (which we were). |

I don't think you can "declare war" on a single corp of our alliance either. What EVE calls a "coalition" is more close to what you're thinking of as say... allied countries in this analogy. EoN and LoI were at war, not two corps within them.
I'm not disputing the "factual definition" of ringers in FPS gaming, I'm saying you're applying the definition incorrectly. |

Now, I understand what's going on..you guys are Eve players.
In fps gaming, if we challenged Seven to a battle....and Deep Space players show up, then Deep Space players are ringing. Fightclub is just set for friendly skirmishes/battles. FCP isn't for conquering districts.
If we declared war on Seven/Top Men, then we would be fighting on your districts outside of fightclub. Send a pm or ask any fps gamer if I am applying the term, ringer, "incorrectly". |

Im so ******* confused but I think the term/word that some are confusing in the thread is..
"smurf or smurfing A (usually) experienced gamer/team posing as a newbie under an alternate name/corp. I think I'm going to smurf and **** some n00bs."
For example going to a match expecting seven and getting a vetted corp in its place... I think ringers could still fall in the same line as smurfing. ..
Example: We go into a match against GAC and there are 12 Si and 4 GAC, in the end did we play Si or GAC....
Ringers would no longer apply if we go into a match against GAC and there are 16 Si... imo this would be considered "smurfing" you go in to battle expecting one team and get another team that is on a whole other skill lvl...

To be clear about Se\7eN's stance, we don't give a ****. I think it will be more beneficial for everyone, though, if PFC matches were 16 vs. 16. So, fill 'em up, people.
And, Bolsh, thanks for the gg. It was honestly one of our poorer games as of late. With me being responsible for putting everything together--and then me losing power right before the start--we were running around without clear purpose for a little bit. I think we could have made a better game of it without that horrible start. Let's be clear, we probably wouldn't have won, but it would have been a better fight.
I do feel like Se\7eN is some joint being passed around at the EoN BBQ. Puff, puff, give! But keep the battles coming; we won't back down from anyone and will continue to fight, no matter how bad the battle goes.

Exactly....from the start, I said that I didn't care. And I think that by my using the word, "ringer" may have been interpreted as if I was degrading Top Men.
I really only continued the conversation just to enlighten those that didn't know what a ringer is. Because someone from Top Men in this thread said, "ok, this is a good discussion to determine what a ringer truly is". When I find the quote, I'll post it here. And that has really been my whole point.
Edit: Here's the quote and this is why I actually kept the conversation going because it seemed like some in the thread wasn't sure what a ringer is.
