I don't mean what will their role be but how will they fly, as in how do you make them go up and down, will they have large torrents, medium, or small. What if we can choose two main small or medium as our main guns.
We should talk about this so CCP doesn't tweak with the consoles like they did with the dropship.
So how do you think the jet should function? |

Fixed wing with vertical take off would be my vote. Toggle engines in either forward or downward thrust.
One turret, since it will be a light vehicles, that can fit either a blaster(for strafing) or missile.
I could see various fittings/models that allow for air combat or ground support.
Logi target painters would be an awesome addition to a ground support version. |

Concept art was vertical takeoff fixed wing. Ladder to climb into from below when landed.
Turrets were two groups of two light weapons. 2 small turrets on a turret and two small turrets forward firing like the assault dropship.
Looked like pilot has the twin forward firing and one gunner has the turret. It had a size comparison with a hav, fighter was larger. This makes sense, modern Su-30 is 22m long, 6.4 high, and 15m wide. T-80 tank is 97.4m(9.9 with gun barrel) long, 2.2m high and 3.4m wide. Fighter weighs less of course, Su-30 is about 2x the weight of M113 apc, but 1/3 the weight of T-80 tank.
Fighters tend to be larger then tanks, they just seem small compared to cargo and bombers. |

I highly doubt they will feel "Ace Combat-ish" therefore I'll personally probably hate them (I loathed how BF3's jets felt).
If I had to guess, I'd say the controls will feel "cartoony" and nothing like a simulator at all.
TL;DR - They'll fly like H.A.W.X. and not Ace Combat (by Project Aces). |

Yeah well the AA HAV will need to be specced into, and Tanks need allot of skillpoints too be used efficiently. So I doubt we will see a lot of those, as there primary role is AA, and they will be extremely vulnerable too ground AV. |

So how do you think the jet should function?
they wok like Hawks do in the PS3 game war hawk, there's a jet mode where it flies like a jet (we sideways), there's a hover mode where you can say the gunships from SW BattleFront (wings down) and there's the land mode... self explanatory (wings up).
there is 1 variation that has an extra gun on the belly but the others are 1 passenger/pilot 2 small turrets or 1 medium (they might have removed medium turrets) and meant for combat rather then transport so imagine LAVs (I think CCP wants LAV to be combat capable since they are being replaced by jet bikes). |

See you say that but think about the announcement of the new AA-HAV. That caught us all by surprise. Why do we need that? It was described as having fast tracking. Well blaster and missles tanks can track a drop ship no problem. So can a rail unless it's really really close. So current tanks have no need for faster tracking to track current aircraft. Well one reason is that when implementing new mechanics sometimes it's a very good idea to have the counter in place before the item being countered. This reverse implementation helps when adding a more dynamic element.
We have HAVs. They need a tweak but they work. They have counters, people can use them etc. Jets would drastically change the battlefield. It is wise to make sure that when they arrive there is already something to deal with them that is tested and works.
Now I don't think we'll get Jets anytime soon. But remember to consider the bigger picture. We don't need dropships. But we have them. Why? Because they will be needed for bigger maps, new game modes. If the developers introduced drop ships at the exact same time as huge maps... noone would be skilled into them but we would have to have them. So you get them in early, tested, skilled into (fixed soon I hope) so when you add new maps that need troop transport we already have it. See the Pattern? |

If your comp can handle it, give PS2 a shot. Throw in a solid flightstick/throttle combo, and you'll see how it's meant to be. Even the lowly fighter, with added rocket pods u are death from above to tanks. That game also has a bit of a steep learning curve to master, with minimal tutorial ( altho at least PS2 added one ) ... but once you get the hang of it, it's too damn fun.

It always amazes me that people are worrying about how stuff like jets and MTACs will function when CCP can't get even the simplest things to work properly.
Let's wait for them to fix stuff like lag, framerate, the inability to walk up small inclines, taking shield damage for dropping down 3 feet, hit detection, controller dead spots, you know, all of the stuff that should have been top priority from day one,so that it doesn't feel like we are still playing a beta.

When Jets are in, I want to specc in those, as the same with MTAC (in being to damn patient). And I will mainly use the gallente, but I will sacrifice armor modules for shield modules, because, even if i'm a pilot, who believe that armor is better than shields, I don't want that little amount if shields go down, because it will be the fate of my vehicle. And i'm expecting them to have 2 small turrets and one medium, I would equip 2 missiles and one blaster.
But dropships need a little fix first, like increasing it's shields and armor, speed, and maneuverability. The controls need a tweak too, something like, L2/R2 to reduce or increase the power on the turbines, making the dropships move, the turbines should be controlled by the joysticks, as well the dropship's body.
And for all vehicles, the actual blaster turrets needs a fix, and I believe it needs dispersion, not be that accurated as an short range sniper, and that dispersion will be displayed by a circular crosshair, like the one that the lasers rifle have , but bigger. And that dispersion will not "screw the accuracy, I won't be able to kill anyone", that dispersion will help the accuracy while moving at high speeds, that crosshair doesn't work with a moving LAV if you're not well accustomed to it.

the LAA used to use medium turrets so chances are sinc eits ment to deal damage and to compensate to its reduction to small turrets (assuming medium turrets are removed) there will be 2 small turrets and not 1, the assault variant that has an additional turret on the belly for an extra gunner means "wow that's a lot of PG/CPU usage" so yes, expect these to be weak, but fast enough to get away with it if done right. |

Absolutely not!
I don't understand why people keep wanting to make dropships into air tanks, when they are essentially nothing more than gunned transport.
They are the equivalent of a Huey helicopter. http://militaryfactory.com/aircraft/imgs/bell-uh1-iroquois-huey.jpg There's absolutely no reason that they should be more maneuverable than they already are. The problem with them is that people continue to want to use them in a way that was never intended.

I.never sayd that I want dropships to become an air tank, they used to be that, and they were to dam. Overpowered.
What I mean, is to increase their survivability, no allow them to be indestructible.

They are the equivalent of a Huey helicopter. http://militaryfactory.com/aircraft/imgs/bell-uh1-iroquois-huey.jpgThere's absolutely no reason that they should be more maneuverable than they already are. The problem with them is that people continue to want to use them in a way that was never intended.
The reason people are doing that is because there are no jets when there should be. People hate waiting so they use what they got to compensate. |

CCP Blam! mentioning working on a ******* Bomber Dropship was the point at which I just couldn't take it with a straight face anymore.
Assault Dropships are ok, I guess. Many nations produce troop-transport/gunship combos, such as the Mi-28 Hind that Russia still uses, but bombers?
We need Light-class attack VTOLs for each race. The Assault Dropships are just modified troop-transports that don't properly fill the same role as a dedicated Gunship would.
As well, if we're going to have bombs, they shouldn't be on an aircraft that can hover, thereby making them the most easymode weapon in the game. Why introduce fixed-wing aircraft like Fighters and then assign what would naturally be their primary air-to-ground weapon to a bloody VTOL transport? Just doesn't make any sense.
In addition, I think we're at a point in our balance discussions where we need to start talking about vehicle ammo limitations again. |

I dropped my crystal ball, it's stuck on a loop now of my future self throwing a playstation controller, what looks like some future version of one anyway, at the holo suite. Is future me raging at future drop ships still being broken? I can't tell, but it seems likely.

I totally agree, but I'm sure if that happened it would be received with an ungodly amount of b!tching and moaning from tank and dropship guys.
I was just telling a teammate yesterday, why should tanks have unlimited ammo and not infantry? Doesn't really make a lot of sense when you stop and think about it.
I think making a tank reload at a supply depot on an average of three times per match(a full length skirmish),that would make protecting/destroying supply depot even more critical, plus would greatly reduce tank sniping.
Again, simple things that CCP is overlooking in favor of adding more content and AUR items. They need to fix what's broken first.

Even the lowly fighter, with added rocket pods u are death from above to tanks. That game also has a bit of a steep learning curve to master, with minimal tutorial ( altho at least PS2 added one ) ... but once you get the hang of it, it's too damn fun.
Recently fired up PS2 again after their latest updates. I'm getting hooked. Dust is gathering... well, dust. I did and wow.. even thou my laptop isn't the best it still feels miles ahead of dust in every thing i played dust for without the stuff i hate in dust. driving an light tank feels like driving a light tank, driving a MBT feels like an MBT and not like your playing sniper or humvee with a gatlin gun (blasters). flying well was tough but that was because i was on a laptop when i pull out a mouse it was a ton better(better not great). and the best part not having to worry over ISK or losing my vehicle to some joy riding blueberry and lose all that isk that its worth. yup.. just waiting for ps4 now. the learning curve isn't bad becuase your not fighting to learn the controls at the same time so i didn't really have a hard time learning the game. i just don't what CCP is think or where they are going but it seems they are fighting to be Halo with money and objectives and i rather just play halo if that is what dust is meant to be. |

the main problem with dropships as a trasnport is it's not practical to how freakn small these maps are- by the time the RDV finally delivers the DS the blues have already taken the farthest point on foot. there's the odd occasion that the dropship is dropped off within 15 seconds but that's 1 out of 10x if even that
the dropship is nothing more than a novelty to wow some noobs in battle academy and with no map expansions in sight it will continue to be so. |
