I don't really mind kids playing DUST. Heck, I was 13 when I started online gaming and people found me quite nice most of the time. The problem is that when 10-year olds spout more profanity than sailors or otherwise act very stupid and immature. I've also witnessed elderly and middle-aged adults behave really immature. As long as you're not annoying and act maturely, age is irrelevant most of the time. |

Actually, that may be an overstatement considering the racist, misogynist , and explicit names and language that permeates corp names, players names, and so on. Allow me to remind you (courtesy of Wang): Quote:Dear players, As many of you are aware the Uprising build for DUST 514 is about to be deployed. As part of our compliance requirement with Sony we are introducing a new feature that will limit chat functions to minors. If you are under the age requirement set by the gameGÇÖs rating in your region (16+ in EU regions for example) and have chat restriction settings on, then you will be unable to use the following in-game features:
Text/voice chat Create/join player corporations Social related functions such as: Email Contact list Leader board In addition, in game entities such as player character and corporation names, station location names (EVE players) and EVE player names performing orbital strikes will appear with a default name instead. To remove the above restrictions will require a minorGÇÖs parent/legal guardian to set the chat restriction to OFF. We at CCP Games are dedicated to creating a safe gaming environment for our players. Please contact our support staff at [email protected] if you have questions regarding this new feature. Thank you. DUST 514 Development Team Kinda wild I thought. I'm glad they did this, but I think they need to do a little more better to enforce it rather than an "how old are you?" box. You can't do more to enforce it. No matter what you do, someone can find a way around it, or the parent can make the decision that the rules shouldn't apply and just give their consent regardless of the player's age. |

Weirdest thing ever to be honest.
Especially in a game about war where the main goal as a player is to kill people.
I'd rather be sheltered from them. (Warning, harsh language) same... that is pretty bad.. I blame the schools. |

EDIT: Should we take the bad words and violence from R-rated movies because some kids snuck in? should we completely censor what people are allowed to say in society because you're scared children might hear something?
Unfortunately, yes. I don't mean that freedom of speech should be taken away, but to improve what we say around others, especially with children. If you had a kid and I was cussing heavily near her, how would you feel? You would not like it, of course. The same goes if she was hiding and I didn't see her anywhere when I'm cussing. Bad for business. Bad for children. Bad for you. I'm no saint, though. But I try. |

Makyre Vahliha wrote:I can understand that voice communication is inevitable, but CCP can still improve it a bit to filter out some of the contents for the kids such as language and blood. Such as age filtering for matchmaking to group them together so some of the adults don't stuff ideas in some of the younger ones. Just my thought. I wouldn't want kids to treat Dust 514 like a playground since more are coming out of COD. I would rather give my kids squirting water toy guns than have them exposed to online games until they're old enough.
There is very little blood in this game and the only language that comes from the game is though voice and text chat. You can't censor chat in a MMO |

It doesn't matter what goes on in the school if you don't let them get away with that **** at home. If I ever talked like that I'd have been grounded.

It's just my thought. How do some of you feel about this? Well, we don't need to add a filter if the children are playing against the rules. That's their problem, or their parents. Well, it's true that it is the parents' responsibility. But do half of the parents know what the children are playing nowadays? Some of the PS3 consoles are in their rooms and parents don't really pay attention to what they download. Usually buying games had to be approved from the parents so they see what's on the case. But since Dust 514 is free, it's easy to download. Hell, I was never allowed to have a TV in my room, much less a game console. Only thing I could do in my room is build Lego kits and read.
Speaking of which, pretty much all of my leisure time was spent READING BOOKS which it seems no one wants their kids doing anymore. |

Not really, I can think of about 6 kids off-hand whose parents proactively try to control this very thing, and for at least two of those, it has been a successful campaign. It's not whether the parents keep everything they deem harmful from their kids, it's more about caring enough to try, and to at least have a list of things you'll spare your kids until they are making adult decisions as informed adults. |

Not quite old enough to have children yet, still in grad school, but when I was a kid our console was in the living room, where our parents could watch. We had bi-weekly trips to the library (and I loved reading) and we got spanked if we acted up or misbehaved. Now make no mistake, there were all sorts of games out there with blood, and gore, and sex, etc, and there has probably always been some form of media, be it in video games, television, movies, or books that is clearly inappropriate for children.
The reason most of us didn't get exposed to that stuff, and the reason alot of us didn't grow up watching ultraviolence was because our parents had the good sense to stop us from seeing it. It doesn't take much effort, just watching what your kid is doing, talking to them, and oh gee... I don't know PARENTING THEM to stop this kind of behavior. Parenting is not some passive act, it's not something you can half-ass, it takes hard work, dedication and effort. The role of media is simply to warn how mature something is. It's always been, and hopefully always will be the role of parents to take note of it and judge what your children sees as appropriate.
[Edit]: Also that PS2 spammer has to be a bot. Children play both games, and PS2 has quite a few children on it too who can be just as vile. |
