It begs the question, why should I even bother with this? I just get wrecked as soon as I hit the battlefield by someone who's been here since closed Beta.
Really, it's been 1 day since I started actually playing and the bleakness of this thing for us newbies is becoming steadily more apparent with every game. Uses milita gear, doesn't have that many support skills, still kills proto players and vehicles. Bull****. If passive SP gain is 24k SP per day, and you've had your guy since the last reset that's at least 2.88 million SP. More if you play to earn Active SP (and you do), and more if you buy boosters. I bet you have over 8 mil SP invested in your character.
its called an alt account...... Lots of people make them because to my knowledge CCP hasn't said anything against them. Lol, he could even be using a second character, though I don't seem much point in that..... |

Except at the 10 mil mark you can run proto weapon and suit plus most the support skills so you'd still be competitive. So come back in a year (I don't actually recommend this) |

Aside from core and proficiency Skills there's only so many SP Sinks you can take in to a match, you can take on the Protobro's with the right set up from near enough the start, it's just knowing how to allocate from the start and as a newbie that's not going to happen. |

Speaking to the OP's thread title (or at least part of it)
The question is "Why even try?" and we see people hashing it out over and over.
A friend of mine tried out DUST 514 a few months ago and just didn't like it. With the "release" he tried again and got in a squad with me and a bunch of guys that had been playing the game for a while. When I asked afterword how he liked it he said it was great.
I think it's safe to say new players can't jump in and play solo or with a pick-up squad of unhelpful / clueless players and have any kind of positive experience. You can tell them to get in a Corporation and play with a team but that can't be their first experience. There's no mechanism for it.
I have no idea how we can change that. While there are certainly a lot of problems with gun play that's not the kind of change that will the change the new player experience.
Some people talk about wanting a team based, more tactical shooter. Well, we've got one. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised that people who don't want / can't figure out how to get to the team/tactical elements of the game ask "why even try?" |

I can tell not many play EVE... It takes approx. 18 years, 27 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 27 seconds to skill all skills in EVE to lvl 5 and that was a statistic from last year and it has at least a couple months added. Now in Dust it takes approx. 7 years (heard that somewhere cant exactly remember where) but with way more skills to come in in future expansions, will ofc rise.
Personally, I like striving to get something rather than it just handed to me. Main reason why I'm bitter-vet status in EVE right now lol. I just have to have a new goal to set and I will play EVE again but I do not let the subscription lapse at all. I keep it training, both accounts. I moved on to Dust for the time being |

What he said.
You get less than a day in the academy and then you are thrown in with the people who have been playing for weeks, months or up to a year. People who kept everything they collected asset wise and skill point wise.
..
Also, those numbers that someone posted up. When you say playing for a year, do you just mean hitting the weekly cap every week? |

Dumbass. I didn't say the militia gear isn't good. Try, I just started ACTUALLY playing today, I don't have the X million skill points you have and I'm not familiar with a game that has such awkward controls. The existence of people like you in the community doesn't help, and maybe you're the reason that people just stop playing. Try helping instead if putting people down, enjoy your broken514. |

Yes this game has a steeper learning curve than most console FPS games. But just do as much homework as you can and don't give up. As in life, the more you put in the more you will get out. It might take a few months of getting stomped but anything worth while will take a bit of a time investment. If you stick with it, you will get your return. As bleak as this forum makes this game sound it can still be very enjoyable, despite the bugs. Good luck my friend. |

my experience is just stick in groups, you can actually help with low SP as a logi, lots of wp, and out of direct harm (sort of, heal someone while they shoot someone else)
part of you getting pawned is gear, part of it is not playing smart. |

DUST 514 is something that requires time. It's an experience that rewards those who stick with it. Of course it sucks to be where you are now resource wise, but if you endure a week or two and get a bit more SP, you will see things starting to improve.
It reminds me of the initiation process in Fight Club where new recruits had to stand outside and take abuse...it sucks and I'm sure most of them would rather quit but those who endured got taken in. You're kinda standing outside at the moment too, getting abused...but one day you will be doing the abusing. :D |

That has GOT to be the worst response to a problem. Ever. Because of a poor new player experience you get "Welcome to New Eden." It's sure to be a short stay for me, this game isn't newbie friendly, hell it's not even possible to BE new, you just die. It has almost nothing to do with skill, from combing these forums, I've learned that most of the FPS vets won't come near this game, which means that there's probably, eh...1 or 2 of them per match.
This also means that I'm probably running into a bunch of EvE players and RPG guys. No way am I losing to a RPG guy in a 1v1 gunfight that has anything to do with skill. This is further proven by the fact that all their suits are "PRO" yeah...This is fun. |

The difference between a STD gun and a PRO one, all else equal, amounds to 2-3 less bullets to kill, and even that in edge cases. Now the difference beteen 300eHP and 800eHP is considerable but with the STD AR we're talking about some 450DPS.
So even with a pretty huge difference in relative terms, in absolute terms it's maybe a second or two. If you surprise that dude and have some good aim, he's dead no matter what tier he is. The difference is that you won't care if you lose some 5k isk but that guy could loose 150-200k. Get a few shots on some protobear and you'll be surprised how quick they can duck to cover.

a bunch of eve players cried and cried and cried so ccp said no skill reset at launch. Those same eve players often threw around the phrase 'it's a beta' in defence of dust. Then those eve players treated the beta like a full game and burnt themselves out. Que the tears from eve players, the lack of spine from ccp and the dismay of the new player....players....player. |

It may be shocking to you but, there are "really " good players in this game If I play skirmish for 10 hours I only meet a few an hour..
I had to drive to a friends house an kick @ss with his noob toon to show him this statement is not correct. If you meet a squad of proto tryhards, chances are they would have facerolled you anyway, gear or no gear..
Train your gun game, I spent my first 3 months in a dragonfly suit and I used a Exile AR, No skills invested in the weapon, AND I SOLO, my ratio hit 2.8 @ 6k kills. that was using nothing but milita blue prints and a AR with no skills..(I saved up over 300mill btw)
