IF CCP was smart they would remove ammo alltogether from laser weapons, make them over heat only weapons, then the advantage of the AR would be clear. As to why it wouldn't overheat.

I'm afraid you fail to grasp the concept of a hybrid weapon. It is an energy/projectile hybrid, and the energy is in the round itself, not the weapon firing it, except in the case of blasters, which the AR is not, but even then the energy itself goes through a cyclotron in the weapon and maintained in a magnetic field for directed fire.. It's more of a cyclic rail weapon that fires the round itself with the plasma inside it, and the plasma expands on impact.
I imagine the SR overheats because it's a laser weapon, and doesn't take ammunition, therefore in order for it to not be OP, it needs a brief cooldown period that reflects a reload.
EDIT: After checking out the SR, I agree that if it is an overheating laser weapon, than ammunition should not be a factor. But if it is using an energy source that is depletable, than it would have to be changed out and the weapon would still overheat. Otherwise, it would have to be a disposable weapon, like the plasma weapons in halo, to be discarded once the power source is drained. |

Range is no where near a standard rifle range, accuracy is random, and only work 90% effectively when aiming trough the sights. Most skills seems to be useless, and only makes the weapon worst and not better.
And you want to nerf the AR even more, because people still killing you with it ?
You don't want to know what i think about people like you.... and i don't want to get banned from the forums for another month. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_carbine
The US Navy uses M4A1s for Special Operations and by vehicle crews.
Some features of the M4 and M4A1 compared to a full-length M16-series rifle include:
Compact size Shortened barrel 14.5 in (370 mm), which includes the shorter carbine gas system. Telescoping buttstock
However, there have been some criticisms of the carbine, such as lower muzzle velocities and louder report due to the shorter barrel, additional stress on parts because of the shorter gas system, and a tendency to overheat faster than the M16A2. |

the overheating is not that severe on the m14 like is in Dust. the m14 will not explode in your face, the riffled barrels will just overheat, crystalize and the accuracy will go down significantly. you should not touch the barrel though :)

it really couldn't hit it any harder, but when it does i'll be ready.. just as I have been since closed beta.. there will always be tears from those who hate it, and tears from those who use it when the haters get thier way.. Every AR nerf in every game is followed by someone still complaining about it who wants to use a more specialised weapon with it's own special drawbacks, but still expect it to uber-pwn everything no matter what because it's their choice. People need to stop expecting the game to be shaped just for their expectations at the expense of everybody else who uses these weapons well without anything to complain about. There are a few issues with a few weapons, but the AR is not one of them. The TAR maybe, but the AR as is is fine. |

The way this is going... we going to have to use the AR as a melee weapon..and even then, they probably going to try nerfing that too. |

Okay in order for an the m4 or the m16 to overheat you would need a drum containing well over 100 rounds to even get to the point where you would have to swap a barrel out. In my 5 years as a rifleman I have never had my m4 over heat on me even after firing a full 30 round mag.
Also given the fact that these are supposedly much more advanced weapons that already come across as gimped compared to what we fire today on range alone you shouldn't use real world weaponry to compare to fictional weaponry in a video game. |

It does take a lot of heat. But the heat sink at the tip under the barrel takes it all.You notice it glow when you reload after emptying an entire clip.
I'm sure the Gallente put some nanite repair paste fuel bay in there to cool it off every time a shot is fired :P |
