Alright,
When Uprising hit, I really felt like I knew what I was doing. I specced right into Minmatar Scout, Shotgun, and SMG, and I really didn't look back. After a few days. I'm beginning to hate this playstyle. The kills are rewarding, but it's incredibly frustrating being ripped to shreds by a few shots from a Dullove, or essentially any advanced+ weapon for that matter.
I'm not blaming the suit, I'm blaming my overall playstyle. I don't think I'm really cut out for strafing constantly and being a loner. After hearing the news that the 14th will bring a respec, (WOOO) I can be happy knowing I'll be able to take this Shotgun guy and turn him into something else.
..But what, exactly? This is the problem I am having.
I definitely want to pilot Jets in the future, that is something I am 100% certain of. But they're not out yet. And to be clear, definitely want to do it on this character, my main.
I want to get into SOMETHING that will let me do jets more easily in the coming months, and I need some kind of path to help guide me on that. Do you think it'd be possible to fly Dropships for a while, at least until Jets here? I hear awful things about them, and I'm wondering if there's ever even a real profit to be gained from them, as I'll definitely need to be amassing funds to buy a lot of Jet stuff.
At the same time, I don't want to go TOO far into Dropships, because I'm waiting for Jets. Does anybody have any ideas or skill suggestions for what I can do? I think I might upgrade my Dropsuit shields, skill a little bit into Plasma Cannon and Flaylock, and then just put all the rest into basic vehicle vehicle command and save up to go all out in Jets.
Does it sound doable? I won't have the best infantry equipment, but I think it should get me somewhere and allow me to maintain a steady income of both ISK and SP while I wait for my beloved LAA's to hit. |

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to vehicles, but here's my take. It seems fairly certain that fixed wing aircraft will be put in at some point. However, given that we have no idea of how they will be worked into the skill tree (dropship off shoot or a separate skill tree etc) I wouldn't recommend focusing on vehicle command. Alternatively, you should probably focus on the Vehicle Upgrades skill tree, as I could likely see this applying to fixed wing aircraft as well. |

The jets are still in concept mode. They won't be implented until CCP can fix what's going on with dropships now, and it doesn't appear they are making any progress there. I'd say go for it though only if you have a crazy ton of patience.
One thing I will recommend is skilling back into the light frame but not the scout. Reason being is they are going to add a Pilot dropsuit specialization that will require Light Frame 5, so this is something you'll need eventually anyways and give you something to do on the ground without diverting skill points into something that won't benefit your final goal. One thing I will suggest is adding one enhanced or complex armor plate to this frame, it's almost a necessity. Don't worry about the speed penalty, it's not as bad as it sounds. |

EDIT: Must of skimmed past the part where you said you only have 2.6 million skill points. In that case I say definitely focus on the light frame first which will eventually lead into your pilot suit. Jets aren't coming for awhile so you'll have plenty of time to rack up the skill points for them. I wouldn't suggest going heavy into dropships with your skill point level though because in their current state they are not a profitable role on the battlefield and you need to have an infantry fit to fund it. Fly some militia dropships around though until you get some more points.
Good info, thanks.
I think what I'll do is specialize into light frame, (up to 5, so I can use the Pilot suit when it hits,) then run a sort of AV Minmatar Light with basic Plasma Cannon skills and basic Flaylock Pistol. Does that sound like it'd be a decent role to hold me over until Pilot/Jets come out?

There's going to be a pilot suit for all races and it'll just add a color to the light frame similar to how Scouts add blue to the light frame, Assault adds white to the medium frame, Logistics adds yellow to the medium frame, and Sentinel adds green to the Heavy frame. So Gallente or Minmatar light, whichever you like best.
And yes running a AV Minmatar light as you described does sound like it could be a fun way to contribute when you are not in the skies. Probably add an AV grenade to that and nanohives in your equipment slot. Just remember to put at least an enhanced armor plate on that suit, if you plan on running it with base armor and shields you're crazy. And since you'll have a proto you could probably have room for 2 enhanced armor plates. Honestly that's where I think you get the most bang for your buck. Gives you a lot more armor than one complex armor plate and slows you down the same, just takes up that extra slot. And 10% speed reduction is nothing to sweat on a light suit, you're still fast. Alternatively, you could try to add complex shield extenders but that's even more of a skill point investment and doesn't beef up your hitpoints as much as armor would. |

Try out militia dropships, if you like how they handle get level 1 in whatever racial variant you prefer, that'll unlock the standard dropship. As for the rest of your sp put it into vehicle upgrades, it'll benefit every vehicle you use. |

If you are dead set on being a jet pilot i would say train the "Core" vehicle skills. Engineering, electronics, armor, shield, etc...
With that being said the jets are pretty far away from the current build and i would not be expecting them to be released for over a year from now. |

No don't waste sp on engineering, it's the most useless skill in existence right now, only reason you should get it is to get PG upgrade modules, don't even think of taking it to level 5. |

The description now details that it gives 5% CPU reduction for Power Grid Modules. A significantly reduced reward.

It's a waste of sp until ccp don't give dropship pilots a way to get WP outside of kill/kill assists. |

Concentrate on your day job first. Flying is an expensive hobby that only the SP and ISK rich can afford to indulge in.
Certainly learn to fly the DS. That will help when fighters come long in a couple years as they will have a hover mode. Just do it with the militia Viper that doesn't require any SP investment. It won't be a battlefield wonder, but then neither is a 7m SP 1.2m ISK Assault DS and it won't turn your infantry build into a paper suit. |

Go DS if you have cash and feel like it. Don't wait for jets/gunships or CCP to make DS better. DS is the more likely, but new things are probably over a year away. |

Getting into an assault dropship takes 2.6M SP, but getting all proto modules and turrets takes around another 3 million (for a shield tank). I'm doubting the jets will require dropship level 5, they will likely be a different tree, so in the meantime I'd dump points at vehicle upgrades and maybe get yourself in a Myron (they're relatively easy to get in). However, they're currently flying bricks. Assault Dropships handle much more like an attack chopper, which is why my Myron is named "Transport" and my Python is named "Gunship" |

On a slightly less silly note, CCP has said they'll try to make them better. Right now they can do alright in pub matches, but they still seem to be destroyed by decent AV. |
