A game this complicated and in-depth was never meant to be for a console... If PC players had access then it might be acceptable...
But the following factors will lead this game to its inevitable doom:
PS3 only - minimised target audience, and supports casual gamers over people who will take it seriously like on EVE.
Overcomplexity - a game this complicated should never have been designed for a console, people just won't spend months and months training just to up their game by a fraction. This would be the case in EVE since it is PC and people are more dedicated, but on PS3 people just won't keep up to it... This game would have been better as an RTS, Civilization V / Starcraft II real time strategy game for the PC and PS3 where you trade militants and deploy them with assets... There simply aren't enough dedicated PS3 players who will abide within this rabbit hole... I am having to defend Dust 514 to my friends because they hate it.
Controls and Graphics - if these graphics stay after the release, things won't go well, the screen is laggy and the textures are minimal. The controls are clunky and it is seriously hard for a new beginner to stay interested or get good at a game like this.
Hardcores - new players who join are going to be absolutely devastated by the players with 15 million times their SP and money, and 10 times their experience on such a complex shooter. If I were to join right now with no EVE / Dust experience, I would turn back right away... I would get owned by people so badly that I would just pull the plug out.
The fact that it is free - when you buy a game, you feel obliged to play it after buying it, you feel as if you spent your money on it. Making it free gives you a reason just to put it down without consolidating it in the future.
Sorry CCP, but I can't picture Dust 514 competing or succeeding well in 3 years time... |

I don't think people are too stupid for a complex FPS. It's the reason I play Dust. Any game I've ever enjoyed allowed you to spend a good deal of time customizing and building your character/car/team/etc.
It's the implementation of this game that is off. |

Yeah you are right about EVE being long lasting, and that was very successful of them. But the transition of this 'survivability' isn't going to last on consoles... It just won't. Similarly smoking a joint and getting drunk at the same time is very possible. Now you would be a hero if you could smoke a joint, get drunk and get laid at the same time.

You're points are quite valid.
I've showed DUST to a couple of friends and the immediate response from them is "it looks stupid," only one of them actually tried it out. Unless you come from EVE or even know of EVE, DUST just isn't going to be for you unfortunately - it is just far too complex. Your average Crysis, BF3, COD, etc player isn't going to take the time to sit down and map out their SP so they can have a valid build days, weeks, or even months into the future.
For the one friend I did get to give DUST a chance one of the first things he said when we hopped into a battle was the fact that I "looked cooler and had better stuff." I tried to tell him that with time you earn SP and then you spend those SP on skills to advance your character and that DUST is kind of an MMOFPSRPG which he promptly then deleted DUST from his PS3.
As the OP said a game with a vertical learning curve is fine for PC, but console players just don't have the patience for a learning cliff of a game. |

I am still the worst critic CCP has. However there is one way of being absolutely destructive and say **** without recommending feedback and the other is by providing constructive feedback.
You say that there are so many hiccups but yet don't post how best it could be fixed in your opinion.
I however don't blame the mindset of the gamer. When they see 30 negative things, it is hard to see the other 60 good things. |

It will have a cult following. But 4000 players spread out across the globe isnt enough to really do factional warfare effectively.
The PS4 is one its way in, we have a broken update and a very angry player base (with many making mistakes in re-spec-ing).
They changed the wording of their packs and are simply doing a "refund all - lose all" option.

Do I understand this properly? OP is mad at depth and complexity? Did you even think about the consequence of what you're writing? The only reason anyone is still here is because of the promise of depth, complexity and tactics.
You think anyone is going to stay if CCP removes the only thing that's ever held anyone's interest in Dust 514?
The majority of problems are coming out of this game being dumbed down and flattened. You want to exaggerate this further by making it even more like some CoD clone?
A few bugs and borked features aside, the #1 complaint about Uprising is that instead of rock paper scissors its a bunch of tards clubbing each other with rocks.

The complexity will keep the screaming pre-puberty kids off the game and that's a huge plus. Let them continue to "pwn" in COD. Now we just have to listen to the adolescent's cry.
What is interesting about this game on the PS3 is that the console audience is used to having a packaged game roll out and then just get "add-ons". This game is designed like your typical MMO style game for the PC. That means, several hot fixes, ongoing patches to address user feedback and constant tweaks. Not always for the better. What also comes with that, is constant balancing and unbalancing. I come from a background in PC MMO gaming and can't count the amount of times one of my characters has been broken, fixed, made godly and broken again over the course of my play duration with it.
When WOW was first released, the game was broken and very difficult to stomach. Yet, like it or not, grew to be the most successful online MMO. Now this game is no WOW but its development, I predict, will follow closely to it and others like it. At least, I hope it does. |

God here we go again with the it should've been on PC not console BS.
What makes you think the PC audience would take to Dust any better than the console audience? Last I checked there are BF3, COD and Crysis players on the PC as well... Stop blaming the player base for not liking the game because it's "to hard" or has a "vertical learning cliff". Dust is not a hard game. Dust is not a very fun game to play. Blame the people developing the game blame the people who constantly get stuff nerfed.
If CCP was so great at making games I'm sure EVE would have or should have more than 500,000 players after being out for 10 years lets not forget most people have more than one account on EVE. You are just looking for a reason to blame why the game will fail instead of looking at the true reasons.
You even said it yourself Dust would be better as an RTS so you don't even care about the FPS side of Dust. I'll tell you this if Dust was played properly it would be an RTS but in FPS view. You still need to use strategy in real time to win the game... |

You know what this thread made me think about... Dark Souls.
Dark Souls was an extremely difficult and complex game. Granted it wasn't an MMO or FPS but those difficulty and complexity issues are both things that these games share and none of that stopped Dark Souls from being a hugely popular game. That game is one superb and recent example of the hardcore PS3 community actually existing that the OP says does not.
Whether you recognise it or not, there is a playerbase for Dust514. There is a subset of PS3 players who are hardcore and do want hardcore games with learning curves and difficulty spikes. There are also many people who want a proper MMO experience on the PS3.
Granted this game has its problems but all it needs is the long term vision and support of the devs to perservere. The active player count may dwindle from time to time but I have no doubt that as the game develops over the years, it will become one of the great legacies of the Playstation (3, 4 and probably whatever comes along after that too). |

Good idea OP moar rocks!
Please shut up, your corp sucks and youre bitching.
.........I thought I played this game to get away from pre-puberty kids, my head hurts. |

Yeah, I GET THE IDEA THAT THIS IS 'unique', that EVE succeeded, and so on.
But I just can't picture this being a popular game, it is too complicated, has too small of an audience and is graphically ugly.. I really can't expect to see anyone enjoying a game in this state, it will die and it will only be riddled by some 4000 cult members.

I haven't owned an up-to-date PC since about 2 years before the PS3 came out. I've been a console gamer (and a retro PC gamer) with PC gamer friends whose computers I occasionally "borrow" when I visit, since before the current console generation.
In both console generations where I've been mostly console-exclusive, I've had a strong focus on the more complex games available for the console. Armored Core being a perfect example. The most popular PC-based mech shooters have NEVER had the stupidly-complex customisation options that the Armored Core franchise throws at its players. When I played MechWarrior 2 and 3, I could spend half an hour going through and creating 2 or 3 custom Mechs, testing them, and being ready for a variety of battles. In Armored Core: Formula Front - a PSP game - I could literally spend HOURS on a single AC design before realising it won't work, scrapping it and starting again. I'd send one of my ACs into battle, and watch the fight. If I won, I replayed to enjoy the show. If I lost, I replayed several times over to work out exactly HOW and WHY I lost, so I could build an effective counter. I had 5 basic designs which I tweaked for different encounters with different opponents.
TL;DR version: Consoles need more complex games. There are ex-PC gamers here who want something with depth. Mindless fun is good at times, but it's still mindless, and some of us want something more than that. |
