Trolling or not, there are quite a few players lobbying for a classless system.
They want the Assault to be able to do everything on their own and for every weapon or piece of equipment to be cheap to skill into. Vehicles should be just another tool for the Assault class to use and not require a dedicated class to operate. They certainly shouldn't be the rock to the Assault scissors!
If they get their way we will end up with a Persistent CoD, not an MMO FPS.
Public matches are a huge part of the problem. With squads limited to tiny four man units and most players running solo there are little to no tactics and zero strategy. It's chaos where everyone feels they have to be totally self sufficient because they can't or won't coordinate with anyone else.
If you balance the game on public matches you will end up with a classless system. CCP should ignore public matches completely when balancing because instant battles are not the heart of DUST. The vision I saw for DUST involved multiple roles, strategy and tactics, not mindless zerging and Brownian motion.
Balance on team matches, then put in whatever restrictions instant mindless battles require to prevent teamwork and tactics from destroying a random mob. |

@ D Roc. Maybe more people would skill into scout/logi. As it stands now, 90% of the community runs assualt/tanks..
I guess we will have to see how uprisings goes. If the assault ratio drops then its fine.. |

Allowing other suit types to carry equipment not only allows for different squad paradigms but in turn more diverse game play on the battlefield. Do I agree with assaults getting knocked down from 2 equipment slots to 1, no. It was one of the biggest attractions for getting to your prototype suit and made you more effective all around on the battlefield but specifically in your ability to better support your squad. Was there any game breaking mechanic by an assault carrying 2 equipment slots, no. If anything it promoted more being able to run with your squad and support them (still much less effectively than a logi) while still being able to stay on the offensive but allowed for at least some support in lack there of.
That's my two cents anyways.
You bring up some good points, and at first I was pretty miffed about the scout also only having 1 equipment slot, but with a 6 man squad you can easily cover each other.
Perhaps offering a grenadier variant for the assault that loses its equipment slot for the additional grenades, forcing him to rely on someone else for nano hives. Perhaps give it a % bonus to grenade capacity per level so you can carry up to 2 additional grenades at max level, or even just one. Sounds kind of like Minmatar. |

If it where up to me remove the equipment slot on all assault frames would be my solution. Give them a second grenade slot maybe in exchange. I usually agree with your input on most things, but this one I have to politely disagree. If assaults had no equipment slots then scouts and logi's would be the only suits with equipment on the field. What would this do to game play? Let me paint a quick little picture. Squad of 6 (comprised of 2 assault, 1 logi, 2 heavies, 1 scout) head from alpha to bravo. Logi gets sniped in the process and asks to be picked up, only the scout has equipment and in his one slot carries hives. Squad gets to bravo, hey anyone have a repair tool? nope logi's dead. Hey anyone have an injector a heavy just went down, nope logi's dead. Hey anyone have an uplink so the logi can spawn in.......nope logi's dead. Hey guys at least we have ammo right?? Point of the story, we are trying to open up the game to more diverse types of game play and not turn it into everyone run logi or be SOL when you go down, run out of ammo, need repairs, or need a spawn point. Oh you're welcome to disagree just if the problem was a question and I had multiple choice answers this is the one i'd pick. The balance game has a hard time accounting for player behavior and I agree that if I do remove the one equipment slot form assaults everyone will go wonderlogis.
As mentioned elsewhere we are already on a 'classless' system within a box. Nobody said you have to arm your assaults with an assault gun and tank and gank fit it out. Making an assault ninja is entirely possible, as are logis. Its just that some suits feel too good at one role which over encompasses over everything else or overshadows the advantages of the other 'buckets' of sand.
At lease we are very lucky in the one ability that we can go into battle without slots fitted. There are a few very interesting game play options that arise if you empty out a choice slot for whatever reason. |

look up any RL military... how many medics are in the typical unit? how many machine gunners? how many snipers or recon elements? Now how many are rifle/carbine-wielding dudes there to hold the line?
/me still hasn't figured out why assaults being in the majority is a bad thing... |

It's not. Assaults being able to do everything is a bad thing. |

On almost every suit, I put a compact nanohive in my equipment slot.
Do not leave the MCC without it.
10CPU/2PG and heals armor first, then ammo.
It doesn't do much long term, but it can bring you and/or a squadmate back to the fight. If you are holding a position, toss it at your feet by the nearest cover. It will heal your armor and re-up your ammo just by quickly sipping off of it as you fight. |
