With watching all the keynotes and stuff it could pay off, i doubt it would crash and burn like defiance because they have alot more planned in general and have to flesh out the game so its improving and building on what it has and will continue to do so
Sure it will reach a wider audience and will prob get panned because its not cod and ****** graphics and its too complicated but its going to stick around for along time and offer something different
What other games are offering what DUST is offering? no other game is doing what ccp is doing with dust , as for defiance i havent gotten it yet but what i experienced from beta is that its too easy , and i heard the game istoo short |

CCP is used to offering a challenging game that forces users through a lot of work. EVE comes to mind. I don't think they are worried about making the game that appeals to 100% of the populace -- they are working on a vision and a way of designing games that will attract a certain type of person.
I have no concern at all about when it is released -- especially as a free to play game. |

Cat Merc, you're not seeing the big picture. Most people on these forums will stick around long-term. Anyone who doesn't will potentially come back every once in a while (maybe only every major patch), and check in on their characters. if they don't, oh well. A lot of people will. And with each and every upgrade/update, more will come. Sure numbers will taper off, and we'll have slow "seasons", but the thing about DUST, just as in EVE, it's a perpetual world. It's evolving, and CONSTANTLY changing. You leave one day, say you're done with this game. Say you leave the first week of uprising. it's too confusing. Everyone is fighting over planets, etc.
Then, you hear about a new release this winter. You figure, what the heck, you have some free time. You come back, and your old corp is now one of the major land holders in the game, several corps have fallen, or settled/merged into larger alliances, and in general, it's a whole new meta game.
No. not everyone is interested in meta. In fact, there are just a LOT of shallow people who take everything at face value. we call those people "COD players". Take everything game-by-game, nothing sticks except XP and KDR. There is no real weight behind anything you do.
This is why EVE/DUST is different. It's a much deeper meta game. Even though things like maps.. gear.. etc. takes a while to change, the game is still going on. Every match you play is a battle deciding which corps are going to hold more ground, and make more money. And even farther in the future, this could involve taking stations, and possibly even ships in EVE!
The goals for DUST are huge. and if people are too shallow to see that, then they don't deserve this game anyway. We will always have plenty of people playing. CCP will make sure of that. |

It would be a good idea though to make sure the tutorial and new player experience is as good as it can be before releasing it though, Uprising may have improved tutorials (maybe, maybe not), at the very least it is more user friendly, and has pretty graphics. Judging from the gameplay, its not ready. And considering the BASIC things that are listed on the "near future" list, yeah.... Can you be a bit more specific about gameplay elements and features needed for the game to have a successful launch in the eyes of reviewers? |

CCP has dealt with reactions like this from the start of EVE, its just part of Video game cycles, yeah there are plenty of things they could improve to help give it a better start, but once they start doing that they'll never release it, they have to at some point just shove the baby bird out the nest and hope it can fly, and I for one think that Dust will fly come release, they managed it with EVE and that was a far more likely to fail at the time, considering it was a first of its kind back then, and oh look at that, Dust is a first of its kind too |

Release is not that big of a deal my friend. It's the sale of a "Game of Growth, Verisimilitude, and Long-run Investment" that counts. If it is made obvious to people that Dust 514 is a spearhead in gaming trying to break the mold, then we're going to be just fine |

Pretty much, most of the people who leave because of a bad first impression were just looking for a new flavor of the month. Many of them will come and go, some won't come back, but then there's very little chance that those "flavor of the month" players would have ever become dedicated mercs anyway. |

Im gonna kinda.. side with the release idea-ish, meaning that it would be really good to do the launch on 5.14.13... if uprising came a month ago, why? Because for reviewers and average joe gaming the game needs to have a good impression, which the graph updates and UI do deliver.. especially the skilltree.
HOWEVER, if they released uprising a month or 2 ago, by 5.14 they could just add some meager content and do a massive hotfix patch for the inherenty bugstort that a new build ALWAYS bring. So.. its okay.... but the timing is off.. also matchmaking could be a real pain in CCPs ass. |

Honestly, this is true of any online service or product.
The issue is whether or not the number of active players is growing and whether or not the percentage of people that buy boosters is enough to fund the ongoing development towards CCP's vision. |

Look at what you just said. Most of those guys would never have spent a dime on Dust, why should CCP care if they leave? Dust is going to require dedicated players to work, not people who come and go. So a bad first impression will have a relatively small impact on this games future. Yeah, it's possible that some of those FoM players could have become dedicated players if they had a better introduction to Dust, but it's a very small chance.
All a bad release will do is weed out the shallow players from the ones looking for something deeper than CoD 2014. |
