I've posted my idea for Campaign-style PvE Missions in another thread, but this is a thread to expand upon that idea and incorporate it into my Open World Thread, and my Weapon Change threads.
The number 294 was chosen arbitrarily by my 4 year old son (also an Avid DUST 514 Player going by the self-appointed name of The Little Jackal. Makes me Warm inside, and worried that I play games too often that even my son calls himself Jackal.)
However, on with the show!
As most of us know, there is a vast PvE MMO world out there, with static missions, random events, and so on and so forth. Incorporated into my Open World idea comes this. Phased Instance Missions.
Similar to the 'grid system' used by EVE Online, when a Mission is accepted a Phase is made on the 'District Map' that the agent requires the mission done on. This could be the same District the Agent is in, or one multiple jumps away.
Only the Missioner and his Squad / Team etc. should be allowed in this Phase (though possibly with some Faction warfare-like Zones being open to all.
Onto the grit.
Missions could come as multiple forms, but for starters we'll take the bloodthirsty 'Security' type Missions. Kill this, kill that, destroy this. Etc.
For designation purposes, I'll use the mission 'Level' System from EVE Online to Designate Missions on degrees of difficulty.
Level One Missions - Solo-able. Designed to be relatively easy solo, in basic gear. (Militia / Standard) Rewards are small, SP rewards are small, and loot is generally Standard-level. With occasional Advanced Items.
Level Two Missions - Soloable in Advanced Gear, but doable in lesser gear with a partner. Still relatively straight forward missions.
Level Three Missions - Not solo-able. more complex objectives require at least 2 people to do these missions. Generally Base-level is Advanced gear.
Level Four Missions - not solo-able. More complex objectives and more threatening enemies means at least 2 in Prototype Gear should be required. More people in lesser gear is capable too.
Level Five Missions - Squad-level or higher. Multiple objectives with different requirements to be used simultaneously require high degrees on teamwork and co-operation. Meaning you require a full squad or more to do these missions.
Now onto examples of what I mean.
A Level One a mission could be as simple as 'Clear this {insert enemy} compound.' Could be pirates, Sansha, Hostile navy / Army so on and so forth. There'd be 10-20 enemies in an open compound, you kill them all, go back collect your reward.
A Level Two Mission could follow the same lines. Possibly a few more bad guys, defensive emplacements, in a closed compound that requires you to hack the gate security system to open it.
A Level Three Mission starts to require Teamwork. No longer a fixed number of hostiles, but wave spawns until certain objectives are complete. NPCs spawn out of various points, and various strengths as the mission progresses, meaning you have to cover one another as they perform tasks such as hacking and planting charges. thes missions are Objective-based. Not Kill based.
A Level Four Mission requires high levels of teamwork, with a few key scenarios that require two terminals to be hacked within a minute of each other, or something like that. Meaning that it's practically impossible to do it solo.
A Level Five Mission. Hard, tough, and with multiple simultaneous objectives that need to be done. A pair may need to secure a Gate Control Room, opening the gate for another pair to get in to disable a security system controlling a fair few automated turrets while being covered by a pair of snipers on a ridgeline. Then you have to extract a hostage, while simultaneously planting charges on a reactor, set to detonate as a distraction and to convince hostiles that the extracted target is dead.
The above are only examples, and I look forward to your opinions. |

Pretty awesome idea.
Its features like this that will take Dust away from the cut down fps game feeling (a fps without a campaign mode) and actually make it feel like an immersive MMOFPS. |

Jackal... This idea is Brilliant I would love to see PVE missions added in. Levels (not like a campaign level but difficulty) means awesomeness. I love Dust 514 but with very little extra game types to do we need something that changes everytime. Missions that change in layout, difficulty, etc. because Pub Matches, Merc Battles and Planetary Conquest seem like the same thing (but PC is harder than Pub matches). So CCP enable this feature it will reduce Pub stomping by some degree and also add in something else for people to do that doesn't feel the same as all the other features. An extra addition to this would be requiring standings with Agents like it is in EVE. I would feel that I accomplished something getting from Level 1 to 2 agents, Level 2 to 3 agents, etc. |

Excellent idea, however advancement through agents should be through wp collect from said agent, not faction standings.
How about using the pirate races for agents, and making some of the advanced rewards faction gear, Darkblood laser rifel, Dread guristas swarm launcher etc.....

+1, though I'm not sure how I feel about forcing co-op to accomplish the missions. Wouldn't mind it though, I don't think.
ISK gain should be good enough to warrant losing some of the equipment you'll likely take in, but balanced appropriately with public matches. In turn, however, SP gain should be relatively low. Similar to SP=WP used when you reach your weekly cap on public matches. |

But it's going to be to waste of there isn't more content to attract ALL different players. I 100 percent agree with you jackal. This needs added into the game. |

Trying to keep track of who said what, where, and at what time is a rather difficult task. But PvE was indeed planned for the game, they specifically mention having to "clear out drone infestations" in official advertisements, which is nothing but PvE through and through. One of the ads for DUST also showed a co-op PvE mission vs some Rogue drones. |

I should at least be able to know when the game might get better. Oh well. EVE gets two (huge) expansions per year. Summer and Winter expansions. Typically, they offer plenty of balancing, new features, graphical overhauls, new ships, etc. They are well worth the wait.
CCP has stated DUST will have a full season expansion cycle, 4 per year (Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall). I'm going to assume Uprising (May) is our Summer expansion, and we can look forward to a new expansion (which should bring at least one new game mode, a couple of the missing weapons, a few of the missing dropsuits, improved graphics, improved balancing, a few of the missing vehicles, maybe one or two new vehicle types, more of the missing skills, etc.) around mid-September or early October.
It's not a huge wait, and eventually you'll get the feeling of "holy crap didn't they JUST release a lot of stuff?" CCP doesn't usually comment on what an expansion is going to bring right after pushing out an expansion. And they don't make timelines because things are ALWAYS subject to change and they don't want to horribly disappoint everyone if 6 months ago they said "Black Ops Variant HAV will come for Q3 2013" and then realize a few months later that in order to do that they'll either be releasing a broken product or will have to retract their statement. Neither option looks good for them, so they always move at their own pace.
They do watch and listen to everything we say and they do discuss things internally. Patience is going to have to be something you learn with CCP. And by browsing the forums it's apparent a lot of people don't have it. This is CCP's first shooter, relax, calm down, etc. The real meat is coming, and if you don't wanna wait, put the game down until the next expansion. You'll still get SP to spend on all the wonderful new toys. |

100 percent agreed. Dust wouldn't just be better with PvE, it needs it. Look at how nuts everybody goes for the firefight mode in Halo, or better yet the zombie maps in any of the past 1,514,000 CoD games. Well made GÇ£horde modesGÇ¥ are absolute money grabbers for literally hundreds of reasons. I am personally only playing this game for the chance that PvE will come soon, I'm already a little bored of killing other people or being killed by them.
My main suggestion for anything PvE is that the isk payout should be greater (SP lesser) as you'll be dealing with highly advanced drones made of expensive, shiny materials. |

Yes the AI may need some work, but some PvE is required.
And PvE needs to be goal oriented (ala Campaign-Style) and NOT Kill Oriented (Ala Swarm Mode) Lets face it. Swarm Modes in other games are fun, until you do them again, and again, and again....
Campaign Style Missions (and random Encounters like I illustrated in my open world thread) bring a measure of Variety to the game. Even the same mission at high levels can have different ways to do it, and with different results depending who you team with. |

In terms of PvE mission types Dust could take some of its concepts from warframe (if you dont know it, check it out basically a co-op MMOFPS) which has a decent variety of mission types and randomised maps. I want to see PvE as well, and I think it would be a comparatively easy way to expand game modes as it would require less balancing than the general 'instant battle' matches. I think this coupled with a method of search (with filter) for matchmaking as opposed to just the 4 match types so that you can keep the matches full and keep the variety going without having to choose to change type.]method of search (with filter)[/url] for matchmaking as opposed to just the 4 match types so that you can keep the matches full and keep the variety going without having to choose to change type.
PvE on Non-Temperate Planets I also think that in terms of PvE another aspect of Planetary conquest can come into this, as a way of incorporating the non-temperate planets. These could still have districts, and each district could have multiple 'instances' which could be sort of smaller 'regions' within it. There could be a hub for each district where players could build infrastructure. The instanced areas could give you a number of mission types involving pirates, drones and so on depending upon planet etc. Within the hub areas the infrastructure could include mining operations that would involve some outlay to set up NPC mining operations; these would create more PvE by requiring them to be defended every so often. The materials mined could be used to build Dust goods, and perhaps EVE Planetary Interaction on that district could be linked into this Dust gameplay (bonuses for linking, EVE-Dust production chains and so on). Perhaps these hubs could be owned by NPC corporations that provide missions, which could begin as PvE but potentially become PvP (eg one squad is given a mission to extract a VIP, another to stop them etc). If NPC corporations owned and operated the hubs and players simply attached their own sections (perhaps limited number per hub) these could then be attacked by other players in a variety of missions for a variety of purposes. Capture, destruction, robbery, and so on. Instead of a window of time each day these could be attacked at any time, but NPC defenses could be set up (although players could still join) so that players have defense if they cant make it in time etc. So again this becomes PvE/PvP. If these player owned areas then had a limited number of upgrades it forces players to make tough decisions; one more mining colony or important defenses?
Getting to and from these planets Bringing in something like my Idea for incorporating Warbarges into EVE could change the dynamics of this as well. More accessible planets like the barren and oceanic ones could have these NPC hubs and therefore allow corporations without temperate planets producing clones and without the income to produce those warbarges to get involved in this PvE/PvP. Other planets such as Lava and Plasma planets might prove more difficult, dangerous, and lucrative. So these might require a corporation to move a warbarge over above the planet and deploy an MCC before being able to set up any infrastructure; each MCC being in the command of a player. Rather than owning these districts these would be temporary operations.
Dangerous Planets, Dangerous Games These could play out like a match of Battlezone 2 where it is a sort of RTS/FPS hybrid for the MCC commander. As these aren't going to be properly inhabited planets you would not have the same prevalence of NPCs as the others, but nevertheless there could still be other mining operations, roaming pirate gangs lured by the MCC and so on. Mining operations could perhaps be set up and the MCC move on; deploy a CRU and then a squad can deploy there to defend if the operation requires it. And here is the best bit - as players roam around in their MCCs setting up these operations they might run into another players operation to attack, or even better; an MCC. Suddenly we have 2 opposing MCCs in the same zone and this match can be turned into a skirmish style game; scramble a team together and try and take down the opposing MCC! No redline, no neutral Null Cannons etc. Installations could be deployed from the Warbarge(or MCC?) including a limited number of null cannons (perhaps 2 each) to speed up the process. Perhaps players should be allowed to retreat with their MCC intact, but perhaps taking some time (5 minutes?) from when the retreat is called so that there is time to try to take it out. Retreat would mean that the side that fled loses everything they have deployed; all the installations, all match salvage, any resources from mining and so on. Another option is that players have the option to retreat their MCC at the initial stage of the match, and if they choose not to then they are considered committed and fight to the end.

Campaign Contracts These ideas can be put into practice to varying degrees for all three areas of space, high, low and null (assuming Dust won't go to wormhole space). This could give meaning even to public matches. Consider this planet-wide PvE/PvP on a high security planet. Perhaps a player (or squad etc) could pick up a contract from an NPC corp to help with an operation on a certain planet. That campaign contract would take them through PvE (rogue drone infestation etc) through skirmish, ambush and so on. The difference would be that they would have a persistent goal in mind, such as attacking or defending a planet. The PvP matches would enter them in the queue for a match, but that match would essentially be created through their campaign. So those players who are just looking for instant gratification will just jump into a match, for them it is just another pub game. But for this squad that has just fought through several games to make it to this point, as part of this campaign, this match will have much more meaning. This will create possibilities for both sides to have players with part of a campaign contract on the line, which should increase the intensity of the game. I think that Dust should keep the option open for people to play it just as a run-of-the-mill shooter. Sure they might get bored with it as playing it like that wonGÇÖt be very different from everything else on the market. They might leave, they might come back for a bit and leave again (and so on), because Dust is free there can always be people coming and going and not experiencing the depth of the game. But something like this contract idea would mean that they are going to still be an important part of the universe, even if they donGÇÖt know it.

Still Campaigning for PvE Missions.
Let's give people something to do besides PvP, in a solid, structured manner.
Campaign-style PvE Missions, increasing in difficulty, and requiring co-op at the highest levels.
Addendum Idea:
Something for future consideration:
Cross-Platform Co-operative Missions Following on the idea of the trailers, Cross-Platform Missions between EVE and DUST could be extremely fun, promote interaction (something which I have always pushed for, and will continue to push for) but it will not be something for everyone of course.
The basic idea is to have 'staged progression' that relies on their counterparts to do certain things. At lowest levels, this could be a simple 2 stage mission.
EVE-Side - Pilot warps to Mission Zone around planet, encounters hostile fleet guarding a Fleet Outpost. The Fleet Outpost is guarded by a Energy Deflector and Orbital Cannon from the Planet Surface.
DUST-Side - DUST Mercenaries are sent in to commandeer the Orbital Cannon and Deactivate the Energy Deflector to allow their EVE-side counterpart to approach and destroy the outpost.
EVE-Side Part 2 - Outpost gets destroyed, but enemy Carrier jumps in and starts sending fighters against the EVE pilots. The Fighters will hurt the EVE pilots, but a properly tanked EVE Pilot can survive.
DUST-side Part 2 - DUST mercs have to go back to the Skyfire Orbital Cannon, (which has been retaken by hostile forces), prevent it from firing at your own ship (about 10 minutes) and use it against the Carrier.
That's a simple Co-Operative Cross-Platform Mission. |

Perhaps you could have some sort of Fleet+Squad mechanic that allows EVE and Dust players to group up. This would work for PC, PvE, FW etc as players would be able to use communication tools to keep in touch, make it easier for coordination and could facilitate this sort of integrated campaign mechanics. |

Great additions all to the idea.
PvE content is needed and it's honestly needed 'now' not in some "SOON tm" future.
PvE teaches, it gives people something to strive for, and it gives people unable, or unwilling to be in Planetary Conquest SOMETHING to do besides Public Matches on the same maps, against similar people. |

I'm BACK!
After a short sabbatical during my family's own Christmas in July (5 Birthdays in 2 weeks), and once again campaigning for PvE and Open World!!!!
Let's get the pressure on CCP to give us PvE and Open World. |

Bump for PvE.
Lets get content to keep our mercs interested.
New toys are nice, but they don't hold people to the game. Replayable content that varies should be top priority. MOST (and not all) games released have some level of PvE Gameplay. The ones that don't get stale.
I could list off 'competitive' shooters that have good rated multiplayer experience, but still have PvE. But everyone knows them.
PvE and Open World-style Gameplay should be top priority at this point in time. Or at the VERY least, equal priorty to Core Mechanics. |

Take a look at my open World Thread. I propose a 'eve-esque' style approach to open world to try incoprate the lobby as well as free roam.. but imho, Open World needs to be done...
It's the only REAL way this game will feel more immersive. |

I'm all for this. However, having the phased areas where only that squad can be present does kind of ruin the New Eden feel. It should still be possible for others to drop in via scanning for signal traffic, weapons fire signatures or power signatures from suits. I see this being something along the lines of using combat probes in EvE with the ability to drop the opposing team or player(s) from drop pods of some sort. They were shown temporarily in one of the trailers. |

Nice to see this thread bumped!
Still campaigning for it!
PvE Missions need to be done...
As to the EVE-feel of the game. I will point out that this isn't EVE, and even in EVE, the same point in space (relative to another) can be used by a different fleet than the one currently there. (ie Overlapping Mission Zones) the difference is that Space is vast... a lot can happen in a one AU radius... whereas land is limited on a planet.
The Phase Idea already exists in EVE, and other MMO FPS (Defiance etc.), moving it to DUST would simply make more room for more people per district.
Now that being said, it would be nice to include the EVE-esque ability to scan down people and enter their phases, but in DUST, what would be the purpose? In 'high security' there's no salvage to be had (yet), in low sec you'd hunting... which you could do by waiting outside their phase more easily than going into, and null sec would be the same.
We're not working with a highly sophisticated system like EVE... we're working inside an FPS, and keeping mechanics like this as simple as possible avoids clutter, confusion, and eventual rage quits because you can't complete a mission coz some idiot goes around triggering spawns while you're trying to stealth enter a facility.
Griefing as it stands, will only serve to alienate the playerbase in a game such as this. And without the tools to counter it, (in EVE warpoing out to let the rats kill the usurper is a very valid and often effective tactic) it shouldn't be introduced.

Thankyou for the vote of confidence. Let's hope CCP really looks at in depth PvE ASAP.
I'm not saying what I have here is the ONLY way to do PvE... but it would be a way to do it, and give us PvE Gameplay above many other FPS MMOs out there.
