For those many of you who are unaware, this is what bunny hopping actually is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYEyIGLRqW0
It's sad to see these new generation gamers out of touch with such a remarkable piece of fps gaming history. I guess that anything other than Call of Duty may seem foreign and frighten them. There is no reason to be frightful newberries.
For bunny hopping was once embraced and respected by fps gamers in the late 1990's. It was practiced and replicated on many games, and even implemented in stand alone game engines after Quakes time came to an end. It has even been used on the UDK engine.
I request that CCP embrace this technique, rather than cower away like the other "extreme realism" fps games. Since it's been said repeatedly that your goal is to make Dust a skill based fps game, I believe you should take every opportunity to expand the skill set. Freedom of movement is one of those gaming skills that seperates two players who normally would be no different from one another (as if they were playing Call of Duty).
The reality is that bunny hopping was so precise and calculated that only a few great players were able to consistently pull it off and still be effective shooters. Those days seem ancient now. There are no more 'legendary' gamers in the fps world. Please help bring those days back CCP! |

Yea........no!
Not only is that just about the stupidest thing to watch, it isn't even fractionally fun to do or have someone do.
We already have too many people jumping around like baboons on crack the second they hear a gun firing. |

Not even fun? LMAO.
And how the hell would a scrub like you know if bhopping was fun to do?
You don't have the skills required to do it, so who are you to judge? You can't even comprehend the mechanics behind a motion technique such as that. Maybe this is the reason developers have to "dumb down" todays games...
Because true variety of skill is looked down upon by little kids who only have the capacity to run, sprint and shoot.
Pathetic. |

Bhopping is a dumb idea. 1. You couldn't hop like that in real life anyway. cause you would get to tired. That's what the stamina bar is for. If you want to jump around then upgrade your stamina. And 2. Its a good way to get killed; hopping around like anan idiot (go ahead)
with regards to jumping, is there going to be different gravity effects on the different planets or maps? |

Also, the CS player in that vid was cheating. An aim bot is clearly used at 5:10. (He got a registered head shot while aiming at the guy's feet? That was not lag, and it sure as hell was not skill. Bhop script + aim bot. If you think that was a great player, he trolled you quite hard.)
Bhopping like that in THIS game would make it unplayable for gamepad players. That required old-school kb/m skills.
I share your nostalgia, but these are different times. (and find some more respectable CS players to admire. 2006 was the BEST year for true cs players. By 2010, there were far too many exploiters and script kiddies pulling wacky $hit.)
Bhopping took skill, that's why it was respected. But you got scripts doing all the work now. Those days are gone. (I personally loved doing in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Pull off a bhop, pick up some speed, and decap someone with a vertical spin-"wiggle" somersault slash. *sigh* the days...) |

I enjoy skill based shooters a lot too, but Dust isn't one of them. Dust is about SP, ISK and pubstomping.
If you're looking for a nostalgic trip to the past, I think the Trackmania developers guys recently launched an FPS-effort that might raise your attention. Google Shootmania, if you're looking for old timey entertainment. |

For the love of monkey no, the game is already going to have a hard edge between those who use gamepads and mouse and keyboard setups. This would make ALL gamepad players incapable of even bothering to participate other than to feed kills. It would also raise the desire for botting and scripting a hundred fold. |

Yeah, bunnyhopping. Gravity-defying kiddies traversing the map by the medium of a series of olypic-standard highjumps. You know, Your post is really well written - I could almost believe it wasn't a troll if the idea wasn't so damned ridiculous. So I chuckled to myself and moved on through the forums. And then I thought "hey, what if CCP take this guy's troll seriously?" And I was brought low with consternation.
So - just for the record.
No, just no.
Thanks. |

I dunno, guys, he might have a point. If there's one good metric of skill, it's the ability to hold down the jump button the entire match. It's right up there with the ability to mash the thumb stick to the left or right during CQC. Strafing and bunny-hopping are the greatest measures of skill in any game. I mean, if we take those out what are we left with? Marksmanship, Loadout choice, Team setup, Positioning, and Strategy. In other words, a bunch of scrub BS.
Let's have more bunnyhopping! Make this game a complete Counterstrike clone! |

Holding the jump button wasn't bhopping.
lol true bhopping required you to hold down a strafe key(A and D), while also holding W, and timing your jumps. You had to hit space bar just as you landed, and you turned your mouse just right as you hit the ground to guide your direction.
Don't do it properly, and you won;t build momentum. Do it, and don't guide with the mouse right, and you couldn't turn. I'm not kidding, it really did take practice. I just don't think bhopping has a place here in Dust.
The maps are too big. Even if you could do it, it wouldn't save you from a good sniper in the open. |

bunnyhopping was just a consequence of not-normalizing the vectors after addition when in flight.
This was a bug in QuakeII but gained that much attention that they reimplemented in in QuakeIII.
A good balanced version of that can be seen in UrT (urbanterror.info) - a quake3-mod.
It takes month to years of practise to get the timing and the movement right. But not with a controller. And not in a game like dust. it just does not fit the theme.
-- if you want to try bunnyhopping: go, download UrbanTerror and go on a jumpserver. A real easy map is "uberjumps_beta3". The first pass took me about 2-3 weeks. The first jump alone took me a whole day ..
now i run through that map in about 10 minutes (and im still "slow"..). |
