I've been doing extensive playtesting on afk farming (over half my games easily). I'm looking for ideas to get the most out of it.
Variation 1(skirmish): spawn in MCC, drop uplink in far direction so all keyboard users are tempted to spawn in it, afk. Variation 2(ambush): spawn, kill reds, drop uplink in a hidden corner, hide and go afk.
Variation 2 requires more work, but produces more loot based on your hiding luck. Variation 1 is pretty certain loot per game, but long duration.
Tip for afkers: A squad seems like the perfect solution; as the leader can rotate and games get shorter. Afking in a squad would also bypass the war barge wait and just accommodate you to click MCC spawn if you notice. My alt "afk farming" will always accept squad requests, add if interested.

the droplink actually works, i scored a 100 WP in the MCC with one they were spawning at it for whatever reason
also a logi with 3 nanohives for the ragers friendly firing the AFKers, make sure they have enough ammo up there
maybe i'll make a logi with 2 nanos and a droplink..

when are they going to reward me for playing the game instead of going afk?
example:
1rst skirmish of the day- 9 kills 1 death. I score 6k SP, full skrimish game.
2nd skirmish of the day- 0/0, camping MMC i score 8.5k
why am i being given bonus sp for camping the MCC?
if they wanna build a short bus then by all means i will get on it if it means i'm saving gas.. same way i view dust |

We all know that AFK farming primarily depends on the proportion of rewards that stem from time spent in battle. I don't AFK, I have no trouble capping out days before reset just playing normally. Purely for the sake of argument however;
Are resupply WPs dependent on having given or received enemy damage?
If not you could do the following:
Spawn as squad in MCC during skirmish match.
Everyone is fit as a militia logi with both equip slots rocking nanohives and a weapon with a good ROF to ammo ratio (something slow firing with high starting ammo).
Everyone drops nanohives on or near one another.
Everyone stands in the overlapping nano fields.
Everyone uses a rubber band to hold down R1.
Combine this with other anti idle avoidance measures as necessary to last the match. |

friendly fire will actually make this game fun.. some of us are not new to friendly fire because we started gaming before 2009. bring it. if FF is on i might actually jump from the MCC, colors and petty restrictions no longer mean anything only the people you trust = a true MMO.
seriously were talking about a sandbox here.. where green fights blue and blue fighting reds and everyone fighting everyone- pure chaos, pure mayhem, pure beauty, class death match minus the team malarkey. before there was team death match there was only death match.. and we will return soon to this mother of all game modes!!! pure mayhem! |

A duct tape setup for getting WP is a bit on the verge of exploiting. Afk farming is the kind of entrepreneurship where you sign up for anti-piracy protection on a ship and just don't move a finger when **** hits the fan. I can see bad entrepreneurship all over new Eden, heck its even in that future vision trailer where lazy mercs get the reset button from a dread on orbit.
There is no idle timer kick currently except when waiting for a spawn.
When do I afk farm, one might ask. Let's put it like this: I don't play dust to afk. I afk to play dust with better guns. Just picked a fresh batch of Thales, while watching tv. |

my issue is im not being rewarded for playing the game i can do nothing and still make the same SP, the 1500 extra is not incentive, this whole system is fail resulting in us afkin for the sake of the eve player gaining passive sp or w/e, so in a way it's a protest against a failed experimental system in place for not rewarding us for doing well in the game while incentive to camp the MCC with mysterious bonus SP is in place. and dont no one start on me with that "bigger picture meta gaming" non sense were stuck in limbo here, there is no meta game unless u call the travesty of 8 vs 8 epic.
no ones trying to ruin pub match game here, if your expecting some randoms to carry you thru a pub match your doing it wrong. that seems to be the biggest problem of ppl vs afkers, because the afkers are not helping to win? the afkers are in protest of a failed system they are not trying to ruin the game, they're trying to prove that the system is failed incentives to play the match. the system does not work from an FPS standpoint. you make stupid systems they get explouted- thats the nature of online gaming. |

Not exactly. CCP forbids botting and encourages (tacitly) activities like Hulkageddon, which is a player-led ganking event designed to kill AFK miners.
EVE does not have a redzone. Even in hisec (heavily policed star systems), it is possible to suicide gank very expensive ships in very cheap ships.
Without friendly fire, there is no way whatsoever for players to punish farmers.
I'm not saying that CCP needs to get out the ban hammer, just that redzone and (especially) MCC camping need to deprive people of SP.

Just hit my cap AFK farming. It took me 2 days longer than what it does me normally. But I got a whole lot of things done. I got my taxes done which I prolly never would have gotten to thanks to the the great AFK Farmer network. It took my about 5 hours to get my taxes done and I got about 130K SP with boosters.
I also took CCPs advice and took a break from them game. I got myself a new TV and hooked up my PS3 to the new TV. Now I just turn that tV on, put myself in a skirmish and I am done. I had started doing that with my alt too. Right now I an watching Handsel and Gretel 3D while I get my SP. The best part is I got some wolfman PCP pistols today.
Keep it up old chum. Good job! Let these QQers cry about it. |

Admittedly, I can understand AFK farming as the only sort of "Jita Riots" that we can manage on Dust.
However, I also call QQ on the notion that people who suck at "doing well in the game" should earn a piitance of SP, ISK, and Salvage. Without a PVE learning experience, noobs have no options except pub matches.
Could it use rebalancing? Sure, but that rebalance needs to be balanced for both uberplayers and casuals, otherwise the game is dead in the water commercially.
Of course, once we can control districts, doing well will be far more rewarding (financially) than stinking. |

Actually, Kal, this brings up an interesting point.
I'm not a litigious person and have no intent to do anything; BUT, if a hypothetical corporation like ScIdama were to sell "Active Oomphers" that increased a person's yield for playing the game...
... And this ScIdama corporation knew that some people were exploiting loopholes in the game to increase their yield without actually playing...
... Might not all of the people who bought "Active Oomphers" and who were unable to achieve maximum yield because they refused to use said exploit have a viable class action suit for financial damages based on ScIdama's failure to actively attempt to stop abuse of the exploit?
Again, I don't want ScIdama to get sued by anybody because it would hurt my ability to play an awesome game called Mud 2345 that they are developing.
I just want them to stop the exploit AT ALL COSTS. |

l2afk dude. Until weekly skill cap, your participation has very little to do with skill points earned. Everyone gets (I've seen the number 5 and 7) amount of skill points per second in the match, plus possibly your war points in skill points. I have verified this when playing with my brother side by side on our ps3's many matches. Your position on the scoreboard barely changes the sp reward. The only thing effected by war points drastically is isk reward and even the not much, around 50k isk between position 1_3 and position 14_16 in same battle on same side.
Hence all these threads. Your inability to focus on proper laziness disgusts me.
Looking for 31 other afker,s to run 15minute matches for optimal sp gain. Please me....

well just from an isk stand point the lowest player who was in the game from start gets around 120k isk while i have top the board and have seen 350k isk max..in my test match i somehow beat 4 others who had been fighting the whole time and had scores like 0/10 and 0/12 with 100 wp in a skirmish match. so yea i believe lowering the reward for just being there to make AFK farming less desireable. oh if anyone wanted to know i went 0/1 with 100 wp. i did laps in a viper till it was shot down near the end and had a spawn uplink in the mcc. i think i got better at not crashing it by actually looking at what i was flying at. |

The game needs a baseline pub match to play in to make isk and sp. If not noobs could just do so badly that they never actually progress.
CCP needs to add in higher reward (ISK/SP and Salvage, all based off performance completely but with a higher maximum) skirmish/ambush maps that will draw the better players with better gear.
Risk Vs Reward. Consider our current pub matches as the bottom of the barrel. |

at least in EVE you gain SP passively all the time. in this you are given an allotted time to gain SP. it's play or be left behind. |

I doubt they will be punished, after all, CCP have a pretty laid back, "welcome to eve attitude".
The only way to address this is to rework the skillpoints system. I'm sorry but as it is, it stinks. It makes no difference if I come first or last on the winning or loosing side, my SP gains are always roughly the same. Is there even a bonus for being on the winning side? If there is, it's certainly not noticeable. |

If it's not an exploit it's just crappy game design.
If the game is designed where people are more rewarded for doing nothing than running around then whose fault is that?
CCP has a history of nasty punitive "justice" for people who expose their faults. A reason why I would never be investing money in this game. |

This is just sad... This game has a 7 year skill tree. Are you going to AFK farm for 7 years? What's the point, if, when you do actually play, you fail because you have no idea how to navigate the battlefield? Wow, you have 30 Thales! You'll probably die 10 times without notching a single kill while wielding the fruits of your AFK labor. Only the most ethically depraved and emotionally bankrupt of players resort to this behavior.
The most common justification I have heard for doing this is: "I can watch TV while earning SP at the same time!". Congratulations, you lazy SOB, you just watched the entire first season of Firefly for the 10th time while milking the system and contributing absolutely nothing to the community. Now go wipe the cheeto dust off your fingers and pick up your controller so I can relieve you of the Prototype level suits and officer weapons you so pitifully command, using all of your might as an AFK farmer.
Protest my balls. I am in agreement that CCP needs to do something about AFK farming. I don't think turning on friendly-fire is the solution, as I do not think we should ever have to resort to team killing to correct the system, but I do think that AFK timeouts could be easily implemented. The situation is frustrating, but it takes a certain type of person to derive satisfaction from the rewards gained by gaming the system, whether it be in feigned protest or not, and that person deserves no recognition, credit or respect.
I'm not normally one to wax philosophical on a video game forum, but I do find this quote appropriate:

you sound upset. maybe the game would be more enjoyable if the game wasn't same all the way through. the only reason people do the matches is because you need to get your daily allotment of SP. especially when there isn't any corp mates on and it's Tuesday.

The point is: - I don't have time for dust - I want to play eve instead - I want to focus in chatting and arranging my contacts in dust if any of these apply, you can add in isk and loot gain (officer guns) by spawning in MCC.
The point for making a fuss about it is: - I want recognition and afk contacts to improve the farming yield, by fielding a squad of afkers and speeding up games. Currently, getting afk squad is hard because of a lack in participants willing to get the most out of this. I'm not trying to stir things up, rather i want to take this activity to next level by creating a farming nexus.
I have made an "AFK Farming" channel i want members in. I suggest making an alt for the purpose, so your w/l ratio is not destroyed along your reputation. We will not encourage or be associated with botting or duct tape farm mechanics. Just simple afk farming with power in numbers. If this activity gets gm/ccp hate, I'll stop it right away. |

Well spoken and respectable point of view. - My afk activities are not contributing, my other activities can still be. - I hate the negativity towards devs caused by this. I don't want to stir ****, I want to do the afking more efficiently. This is no Jita protest, this is just business to get me further in the game. When PVE comes, afking gains could be so low in return its meaningless, and I would stop it. Right now I get the same returns for a 70-0 pub win and an afk loss, in approximately the same time because in both scenarios the game ends quick. - There is no notion of pride involved in this. |

I "do" the matches because I enjoy playing the game. Reaching the cap, for me, is an organic process. I'm not so much upset as I am confused as to why people want to AFK farm (and in the case of trollsroyce, want to organize entire squads to do this).
When I unlock a new tier of weapons/suits/modules, I want to feel like I earned it through my gameplay. Garnering a bunch of SP by AFK farming and using that SP to unlock high-level rewards would be a Pyrrhic victory. Sure, I may have "won the battle" by unlocking that high-level gear without actually putting in any effort, but in doing so, I've negated my own sense of achievement. Ultimately, this takes a huge toll on my continued ability to enjoy the game, and will eventually ruin it completely.
I apologize for the somewhat confrontational nature of my previous post and understand trollsroyce's point of view. Hopefully, in the near future, CCP can improve the mechanics of gameplay to eliminate this point of contention. |

maybe people don't want to spend 10 hours a week just to gain the minimum requirements to progress in the game. the SP is what people are after. why bother equipping level 1 crap when T2 is what you want and need to actually be effective.
i don't and along with many others feel the game isn't pleasant to play at all and if everyone is offline in your corp you would have a more pleasant experience of gaining SP by watching water boil.
just because you find it such a pleasure doesn't mean everyone else does. i don't like being told when to play the game and for how long. EVE is great for that, because i can play leisurely or active depending on what i am currently involved in. playing half hour long skirmishes is just a waste of time and even more when half the time your team is completely useless. what makes it worst is that you are forced to go through that in order to gain your weekly allotment of SP. |

Gear is just a means of accomplishing what I want to be - which is still a bit blurred. Perhaps a top 10 all time sniper in the long run? Perhaps a link in the chain of a large, planet holding alliance? Gear unlocks are just an arbitrary goal towards those examples. Because of this, the only sense of gratification in getting a shiny gun is "ohh shiny, can use this in a corp match later on" instead of "ohh shiny, I really deserve this for my hard fought battle". |

I appreciate you taking the time to explain your thinking in more depth and I have to respect the point of view of an EVE veteran. Admittedly, I am new to the EVE Universe and I sometimes forget there is a larger game at play here (or at least there will be eventually). Maybe this is all just a bunch of Open Beta hand-waving and will be insignificant in the grand scheme of things. While AFK farming may not suit me, I suppose it doesn't deserve so much of my wrath, especially considering the current state of the game.
Again, I apologize for being a bit harsh in my original post in this thread. I don't want to go back and censor what I said so I will let it stand as-is, but you have helped me to see your side of the argument. |

I dislike AFK farmers in matches regardless of whether they're on my team or on the enemy team.
Why should those who AFK reap the fruits of a victory that they have not helped to attain?
If you do not enjoy the game, then do not play it. If the majority of your corp is not online, ask the leaders to recruit more members or leave and find a corp with more people.
As it stands with Ambush and Skirmish, you are matched to a team. Whether or not you feel obligated, you are a part of that team. They should do all that they can to help you and you should do all that you can to help them.
I as a medic may prioritize my immediate squad, but that does not mean that I disregard the rest of my team. When I am able, I revive the fallen, heal the wounded, and provide supporting fire.
I believe that the equipment you wear and the position on the board should be something that you have earned through effort. I respect the new and bad players, who at least try to do what they can to contribute. They took a stand and while they may not have impressed me, they have not earned my scorn.

Interesting topic, which seems to come back in any online xp (sp) based game...
Here are the questions that I think are relevant to this subject:
1. Why do people AFK farm? 2. Is AFK farming actually a problem? 3. How could you prevent AFK farming?
1 is easy: because they can. Anything based on "gain" will lead people to want gain as much as they can as fast as they can. People feel they are missing out if they don't.
2 is rather difficult... you could argue that it's "not playing the game as intended", but you could also argue "in real life you can be a slacker too". My biggest issue with it is that you will have people doing it not because they think it's right, or fun, but because they feel obliged to, just to keep up. That is potentially lessening the experience for others.
3 is easy again: there are lots of ways. However which way is good/best, that's not so easy. The first thing that springs to mind would be to not count a player in the MCC or redzone as "participating", so it would only register the time spent in an area where you can be killed by enemies. Sure, you could still hide somewhere, but it would be much harder.
Other options include friendly fire (though that opens up loads of other abuse issues, even though I think it would make sense), input requirements (easily circumvented with auto fire controllers, programmable keyboards or even a rubber band), only reward actual accomplishment (which leads to certain types of player having a hard time gaining SP) and of course the good old "report, check, penalize" option (which is not full proof, is a lot of work for CCP and will be abused as well).
Conclusion: if it were up to me, I'd go with the "MCC and Redzone are not counted as participating". Would also prevent redzone snipers (I don't mind snipers at all... as long as I can find them and kill them). The only real problem I see is for a redzoned team, but the chances of that happening might be less with no AFK players :D |

1 Because this game has gotten really boring. People either red line or get red lined. There is no clear incentive to play pubs right now. Corp matches dont give you SP.
2 No
3 Make the game more interesting and playable

Quoting this as it sums up my stance on all 3 points, as well as my favorite redline sniping fix. Excellent insight. |
