With all the discussion coming from the recent Sony announcement on PS4, there is certainly no shortage of speculation and misinformation, but amid all of this I think we can all agree, of the upcoming titles that will present the more prominent discussions are going to be those that see Dust 514 and decide to make similar, if not direct competition for our game.
Among a few that have been going around and will likely multiply with E3 this June, I'd like to focus primarily on Planetside 2, if only briefly. Apart from the rumors, most of the buzz is from this comment: https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/304635642011344896, yesterday. Of course, it is very possible that this has nothing to do with Planetside 2 coming to the playstation 4 this winter, but at the moment is seems one of the more plausible suggestions among the list.
Given this, I would simply state that I would be in no way worried if they come to the PS4, but neither do I think they should be ignored. SoE is a pretty solid company and have often made some fantastic games in the past, but have just as often left them in the mud on the support side and shipwrecked some of their best lines. But, they have shown over the past decade that, despite this, they can continue to get back up from failures and success and continue to push the envelope.
CCP is an entirely different animal, new to the industry, and arguably just as innovative and risky. However, I believe the scope in the case of Dust 514 is something far larger, grander, and generally more impacting than anything Planetside currently or even plans to offer. In a sense, Dust is something very internal and if it gains critical mass, pretty much unstoppable, whereas Planetside 2 is itself a sequel...to one of the great games of this decade I might add, but all the same. From what I have been apart of, Planetside has some very interesting and amazing features coming to it, but the overall sense of gameplay will be about the same.
I'd like to come back a write a little bit more, but for this 1st point (2/22), my initial thought's are:
TL;DR In the long-run, the vision for Dust 514/Eve Online is far grander, daring, and immersive, than anything SoE has put out in the past and has plans for in the future. As such, while I look forward to PS2 coming to the playstation, I am quite confident that we will be more than able to compete...and even more, learn, adapt, and overcome. |

Planetside 2 just announced server mergers becuase populations are getting too low on some servers.
Many quitting players have expressed thier frustration with the game such as the exuberantly long nearly sensless grinding and lack of conquecences for poor performance or rewards for good performance. |

I heard a little bit about that (If you've got an article in mind feel free to post it). I'm telling you man, this game is gold. I've never felt like a fanboy for any game the way I feel about Dust/Eve. ....Maybe the Total War series...maybe |

I play Planetside 2 since launch and have to admit I really, really don't understand why people keep comparing it to DUST or trying to say which is better or not.
Seriously, if you played both games and have an IQ of at least two digits, it's CLEAR that they're not alike.
I'm not saying Planetside 2 is bad - the opposite, actually. The game is fun, it's a huge experience and have battles in a scale I've never seen in a shooter. It's a game full of epic moments. However what Iron Wolf Saber mentions above is true: "senseless grinding"
Planetside 2 disguises itself behind a "territorial war for resources and control" but the truth is that it doesn't matter **** for the game. If your nation has like 1 little spot of land and the other nations have the rest of the continent, it makes no difference at all. The resource regen rate may be slower, yes, but they are CAPPED, which means that they're pretty much full all the time. Months playing and I've never really seen the territorial war make any difference. It's just an excuse for huge maps and hundreds of people shooting at each other.
As of now, DUST "might" seem a little senseless as well AND lack the battle scale PS2 has - TRUE. But the real scale of DUST will only be true when we have every base system working, the economy flowing and the corp battles really having an impact on sov and FW, basically when the game works "perfectly" with EVE.
It's true, DUST will probably never have the same single BATTLE scale of Planetside. However it will have WARS in a scale never seen before.
So, yeah, both games are great but they're DIFFERENT! Stop comparing them! |

Planetside 2 has its own problems, but check out this video series to see how much broader the game's scope is compared to Dust 514. There's some way to go. |

I consider both games to cater to very different audiences. I've played both and I enjoy both for very different reasons.
Planetside 2 caters to those who enjoy very large fights and heavy team-focused gameplay. "Lone Wolfing" in Planetside 2 is only a viable tactic if you intend to be a sniper that doesn't really contribute to the fight. However, as people have pointed out it does have drawbacks, but these are primarily in the meta game. What i mean by that is that it DOESN'T HAVE a meta game at the moment. The only reason to play is to get into the big fights and log off once you've had your fill. Places the game excel's (at least in my opinion) are character customization, weapon customization, and theater.
Beyond custom helmets and armor for your class, you can also get different patterns of camouflage, attachments for your wide selection of per-class weapons (including RDS, scopes, Holo sights, and even IRNV scopes, as well as under-barrel GL's, grips, and barrel attachments of all kinds). It also succeeds in getting players involved in the game with the ability for people to join public platoons to play with.
PS2 also does a great job of giving players a wide variety of locations to fight at, which they can choose at any time. Making it require a substantial amount of playtime before the players begin tiring of the landscape they're fighting in. However, the complete lack of a respectable meta game in PS2 demolishes its longevity.
Dust514 on the other hand involves much smaller engagements, where individual skills, as well as level of actual character skills, is FAR more important. There is still a focus on the advantages of teamplay, however there are currently no real mechanisms for the "pub" players to work together intuitively without a headset. Even though there is a way to mark objectives on the map, simply getting the map loaded, and then marking the objectives, takes far longer than it should, and usually ends in people marking themselves or a squad mate as a defense objective just for the bonus points and not to actually give direction.
Dust514, for the time being (as its going to be expanded eventually), has a SEVERE lack of customization options beyond your character skills. Limited armor choices, limited vehicle choices, and the requirement of ISK to get things beyond militia fits seems to turn a lot of non-EVE players off from the game. Not to mention the extreme lack of variety in current theaters.
Dust makes up for this, however, in the abundance of available meta gaming potential. Between the depth of character skills, item upgrades, and EVE politics there is a quite a bit for players to come back to beyond fighting prowess.
However, I have noticed both games seem to suffer from an extreme lack of guidance, CCP tends to suffer more at this however, as its also something I see pretty regularly with EVE online. SOE does a decent job as they brought on a good number of talent from Youtubes PC FPS crowd to do tutorials that help guide people in the game. CCP on the other hand, does not offer much in the way of guidance. Players I have met that do not have a pre-existing familiarity with EVE Online's skill system tend to have trouble figuring it out for themselves. Though they can figure out most of the large details, the finer things like specializing in particular fields, as well as upgrading skills that benefit their play style seem to evade them.
As an example, i've seen a few new players I voice frustrations about the range and accuracy of their weapons, compared to others using the same ones. What they don't realize is they do not have points in (for example) the Light Weapon Sharpshooter skill, but the other player does, which gives the enemy player a very large advantage over them in single combat with AR's. For a lot of new players, that information is not made apparent, they're occustomed to games that give them a path to follow with their character that fits their playstyle, but with DUST, there are no paths, so many people just stand at the beginning confused at which direction they should go (or in some cases attempt to go in two or three directions at once).
As for the idea of planetside 2 coming to the playstation I wouldn't worry. I |

PS2 just doesn't have any feeling of accomplishment. Battles fizzle out and you are left standing there wondering "what now?". And the progression moves at a snail's pace. |
