With all the discussion coming from the recent Sony announcement on PS4, there is certainly no shortage of speculation and misinformation, but amid all of this I think we can all agree, of the upcoming titles that will present the more prominent discussions are going to be those that see Dust 514 and decide to make similar, if not direct competition for our game.
Among a few that have been going around and will likely multiply with E3 this June, I'd like to focus primarily on Planetside 2, if only briefly. Apart from the rumors, most of the buzz is from this comment: https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/304635642011344896, yesterday. Of course, it is very possible that this has nothing to do with Planetside 2 coming to the playstation 4 this winter, but at the moment is seems one of the more plausible suggestions among the list.
Given this, I would simply state that I would be in no way worried if they come to the PS4, but neither do I think they should be ignored. SoE is a pretty solid company and have often made some fantastic games in the past, but have just as often left them in the mud on the support side and shipwrecked some of their best lines. But, they have shown over the past decade that, despite this, they can continue to get back up from failures and success and continue to push the envelope.
CCP is an entirely different animal, new to the industry, and arguably just as innovative and risky. However, I believe the scope in the case of Dust 514 is something far larger, grander, and generally more impacting than anything Planetside currently or even plans to offer. In a sense, Dust is something very internal and if it gains critical mass, pretty much unstoppable, whereas Planetside 2 is itself a sequel...to one of the great games of this decade I might add, but all the same. From what I have been apart of, Planetside has some very interesting and amazing features coming to it, but the overall sense of gameplay will be about the same.
I'd like to come back a write a little bit more, but for this 1st point (2/22), my initial thought's are:
TL;DR In the long-run, the vision for Dust 514/Eve Online is far grander, daring, and immersive, than anything SoE has put out in the past and has plans for in the future. As such, while I look forward to PS2 coming to the playstation, I am quite confident that we will be more than able to compete...and even more, learn, adapt, and overcome. |
