Currently there is an option for y axis to be inverted. However, there is no option for the x-axis, and unfortunately I am one of those people that need to use the dual invert option on the controllers. Without the dual inverted option, its almost impossible for me to use a controller effectively. Is this something that would be possible to implement on or before launch because I have a feeling I am not alone on this?? |

I whole heartily agree! I really like this game and want to play it very badly, however, I can't, because of the lack of inversion on the X axis. |

I fully understand inverting Y to make pointing a weapon or looking just like flying a jet with a joystick. But inverted X? I can't get my brain around that one.
So to strafe left, you would move left analog stick right? To look or turn left, you would push right analog stick right? You guys must be from that inside out backwards parallel universe with the "Evil Kirk" and Spock with the goatee. Just doesn't make sense in "this" universe.

Regardless of the wiring in your personal brain that would require this there is a new UI coming.
Additionally there is the remapping of everything feature. I have no idea if they are connected but it would seem fitting that they were.
The remapping will allow remapping KB/M and Controller buttons to perform the functions you want. |

Are there any games where this is an option for anything other than third person cameras? I'm being honest here I don't think I've ever heard of it! |

I'm fine with having the option if people want it, but I have to ask (and I am not alone it seems):

If you've ever wanted to see a useful visualization of thumbstick inversion options, play the game Rock of Ages and check out its control options menu. They have animations of little knights moving wooden joysticks around to demonstrate what the different invert options are like.
Long story short: the non invert options would require a geared joint if they were mechanical apparatuses while invert is simply a stick pointing directly out of the camera's backside.
Personally, I use a bizarre mix of different options depending on the type of camera. I invert Y for first person shooters with a controller, but do not invert with a mouse or when the camera is on a fixed rear axis (where you can't turn around or look in any direction beyond a maximum angle). To make things even more complicated, I like to invert X for third person camera controls, but not for third person aiming controls, though I think that has only come up in the Dead Rising franchise.
People's brains work differently, and it's a simple enough option for devs to implement (certainly simpler than explaining the reasoning), so let's let bygones be bygones. |

Inverted x-axis???
Only way I could possibly see any human able to pull this off is if you are one of the very few people who plays holding the controller upside down and backwards (I have actually seen people play like this). In that manner, moving the stick left would turn your character right (and strafing left would strafe right), and inverted x would be the only solution.
But to hold the controller normally and need to invert x? That is incredibly odd, might be a new Guinness book of world records entry for that one |

Very interesting, I never thought of it like that. A good way for me to understand it, is by imagining that the controller thumb stick is attached to the back of my mercs head, so pushing it to the left would actually cause the merc to look right.
Never gave it much thought, but I do invert x when it comes to third-person shooters (always made sense to me because I was moving the camera left when I pushed left), and I am pretty sure I invert y as well since it is along the same theory, pushing down makes the camera go down (ironically I always have to invert y for FPS games though).

Kall Hut wrote:One could easily get used to the different layout. The brain can rewire itself very fast Well that really depends on the player and on the games they play.
To be fair, if they constantly play other games with said option and suddenly change to one without it (Like say, Dust) then it can be more difficult.
Plus "getting used to" something and being adept with it are two completely different things, exact reason why many preffer being able to customize button layouts, otherwise there would be no reason to have inverted Y-Axis or KB/M support or other layouts at all to begin with.
I for one constantly change from one to the other in games that allow it. for cases such as this or any other where there isn't an option to invert X or Y axis, so it really wouldn't affect me either way, but still agree this should be added. Heck, even after being used to switching constantly I still get confused from time to time, must be a real pain for someone who's specifically used to one style and has to suddenly change to another .

Has there been any response about adding this option yet? It really needs to be added--it's obviously supported within the scope of the Unreal Engine and whatnot (have played multiple titles that use it, and they had full inversion options supported).
Just joined Dust, and I am one of those having a hard time adjusting to not having an inverted x-axis option for the look control (ie: camera control). Nearly every game I have played where you have camera control has either defaulted to an inverted axis, or had the option to toggle it. Not talking rare occurences here either. There is a long history of games supporting this option, back into the days of the PS, Sega...heck all the way back into the era of Descent, Doom, and Quake if I remember right. More recent lines (not just a single game, but entire series) providing the option include Uncharted, Infamous, Borderlands, and I think even Assassin's Creed had the option (only played the first one so far, but it's been a while), as well as MMO's across other genres (like the Online Final Fantasy's, games that people play for YEARS). I just spent a couple months farting around in BL2 in fact, and may be a big reason why I'm having trouble adapting to not having fully inverted camera control like I had in that game (which uses Unreal also).
Think that may have been the disconnect with the OP in this thread. There are players who have played a variety of game genres that gave us options for camera control (some times multiple views, 1st, 3rd, chase views). These people didn't "grow up" in the FPS generation of games. We're talking 20-30+ years of gaming, which has some of our brains "hardwired" into this as a natural way of control. So... it's not exactly easy retraining yourself, especially if you are going back to the 1980's with this feature.
TLDR: Considering how long it has been available across multiple genres (including other games with first person perspectives), this could very well be a make-or-break issue for a lot of players. Don't see any harm in adding it as a toggle in the config menu. |
