Don't forget to give Terranigma a shot. You might have played the other two games in the series without knowing this one was out there. ActRaiser and Soul Blazer, this is the 3d game in the series.

... But then they came out with the second one with new character models and revamped battle system and it got bad. Still trying to clear it *It has areas where if you make a mistake - START OVER FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE GAME*
Still - even with the crappier models and worse battle system the story is still there. So I trudge on!

I'd say the little touches old ps1 rpgs had made them more fun as well. The mini games in FF7, the beer drinking game in Chorono trigger, Zenogear has those robot battles that layed out like a fighter game instead of turn based combat.
Something about newer rpgs strikes me as less willing to throw in crazy part parts.
Oh yeah, FF7 even had an RTS battle. Just one of them. That kind of stuff is awesome and I miss it : ( |

OH! if anyone is like hardcore into finding other old square enix RPGs they might of missed, try out one of my all time favorite snes rpgs. Roboterk.
It starts slow, up untill the robot crab boss the game seems uninteresting polt wise and the game just seems ok. But then, omg, the twist doesn't just intoduce an amazing plot, it introduces brand new gameplay elements over 15 hours into the game. Suddenly the whole game can be reexplored and battles fought differently.
Throw in a crazy fun crafting system and programable robot turn based semi RTS battle system. Oh , omg It's been 6 years but it almost be time for me to play through robotech again. |

You could shoot hundreds of missiles at once just to see it countered by hundreds more - was a good game really.

No love for Drakengard 1 for being overly repetitive. Never played 2 and I hear there's an MMO out for it now.
Phantasy Star would be awesome if it had a console MMO running US side like they supposibly do for asia.

Moving from General Discussion to the Locker Room.
Oh, and the OP is right. The answer is Chrono Trigger with Planescape: Torment coming in as a close second. |

FFX beat out Morrowind by only a month or two short of a year... Daggerfall was really good though.

Ultima VIII - made in 1994. I remember it took about 8 floppy disks to install ahah.
Was fun, with bugs and sometime pretty hard (for the age I was)

I'll make sure to check it out - I spent hundreds of hours fine tuning my teams for FFtactics. Loved it. PSP Version with all the upgrades was garbage with that spell lag. |

Some of these consider old skool are hilarious. . really FF10? Anything post Playstation I wouldnt consider oldskool and if your age deems otherwise then your not old enough to claim anything to have lived to be old skool. SNES should be the newest old skool mentioned (know your roots), especially if your a kb/m player as most claim to be, pc invented the RPG. Consoles just brought you a comforable couch. Now I just sound like an old man.
*See what I get for only reading a handful of posts. I got beat to ZORK* ZORK -this is my first exposure to RPG and came out a couple years after I was born. Google it. I thank my dad for still having it around when I got into games. Pool of Radiance Rogue: So simple, so addictive.
Great mentions: Shadowrun Fallout
JRPG are fantastic. Blow away much of what we get here in the states. -Lunar -Mana Khemia -Ar Tonelico
I could go on. . .Great Thread for people hunting down old greats to play if they are looking for something new. |

I like Ni No Kuni because I love Ghibli Studio :3 I just don't like JRPG because I like to interact a lot with the enviroment, and when I play those games I found in a tunnel with limited amount of doors, more than in a open space. A beatiful tunnel, but still a tunnel. my2ISK |

I guess I fit in with an older crowd. Playstation was next gen for me and on it FF7 redefined the scope of my RPG experience
Final Fantasy 3 (or 6 if you are technical) Phantasy Star 4 Chrono Trigger
The Top three games from a golden age in gaming. I was there for Final Fantasy 1 and I was hooked on RPG's. But those top three showed me how good a game could be. Despite advances in graphics and sound I have yet to be as amazed and taken in by a game as I was with those three (well perhaps Mass Effect did that for me). I'm sure I lend some nostalgic weight to their impact on my gaming life, but there has yet to be another game to surprise me and draw me in as much as they did.
I imagine it had to do with the fact that so much was left up to the imagination as there were only words to read and still images or 8 bit animations to paint the world, create a scene, and transfer the emotion of the situation back to me. Just as books, comic books, and some movies are able to do only a few games are really able to pull off epic stories. These were them for me. |
