Earthbound
You said old school, so how could anything else win? The battle system is practically text based
Also terranigma is at chrono trigger level, but only europe got it. So sad. If you haven't played it, you've been missing out on one of the best hidden gems ever made.

Oh snap, Crystalis is even more oldschool I'll give you that. And in a lot of ways terranigma took a lot from that game. |

And yet another excellent RPG series. Especially IV or was it III? The one with the blonde princess with wings and a cat-man bodyguard lol
3! The DNA system in that game was awesome. Also just the whole plot and world was fantasic. I loved how there weren't random battle areas, you fought where you got into a random encounter, no random empty field BS. |

I think I need a break from dust anyways after hitting cap. May just re-download Breath of Fire III and re-play that beauty of a game. Mixing spells mid-battle to get more powerful spells was awesome Probably going to re-download FF9 8 7 with Tactics, Suikoden, and a personal favorite - Xenogears. Oh and Grandia! <3 Thank you PSN for selling all these awesome games for under 10 bucks - the hard copies go for the same price as full fledged PS3 games Q.Q
Don't forget to give Terranigma a shot. You might have played the other two games in the series without knowing this one was out there. ActRaiser and Soul Blazer, this is the 3d game in the series.
Also the lesser known secert of mana 3 is worth every old school RPG fans time as well. |

I'd say the little touches old ps1 rpgs had made them more fun as well. The mini games in FF7, the beer drinking game in Chorono trigger, Zenogear has those robot battles that layed out like a fighter game instead of turn based combat.
Something about newer rpgs strikes me as less willing to throw in crazy part parts.
Oh yeah, FF7 even had an RTS battle. Just one of them. That kind of stuff is awesome and I miss it : ( |

OH! if anyone is like hardcore into finding other old square enix RPGs they might of missed, try out one of my all time favorite snes rpgs. Roboterk.
It starts slow, up untill the robot crab boss the game seems uninteresting polt wise and the game just seems ok. But then, omg, the twist doesn't just intoduce an amazing plot, it introduces brand new gameplay elements over 15 hours into the game. Suddenly the whole game can be reexplored and battles fought differently.
Throw in a crazy fun crafting system and programable robot turn based semi RTS battle system. Oh , omg It's been 6 years but it almost be time for me to play through robotech again. |

Wasn't there a Ps2 game based off that? A robot game where you could transform from humanoid - to floater - to airplane. You could shoot hundreds of missiles at once just to see it countered by hundreds more - was a good game really. I'll have to hunt down this suggestion of yours! typo I meant Robotrek
lol also no your thinking of robotech! In fact I think the main downfail of this game was people expecting an rpg about robotech and being disapointed
Still if I keep fining no reviews of some of my favorite games on youtube I 'm goign to have to start making some since at least my ***** videos would be better than nothing. |

How about the Phantasy Star games?
Drakengard games were good too.
No love for Drakengard 1 for being overly repetitive. Never played 2 and I hear there's an MMO out for it now. Phantasy Star would be awesome if it had a console MMO running US side like they supposibly do for asia. And Radiata Stories is +1 I chose monsters - One day I'll go back and pick humans. Drakengard 1 is worth one play through if you have an emulator. Press that ~ key fast forward battles, heh. The game gets really interesting and is fun to slove the crazy puzzles.
Drakengard 2 on the other hand is a master piece for old school rpg fans, love it. |
