Old skool = nothing past ff10 I completely agree 99% of RPG's after FF10 sucks *Besides Tales of series* But this is the proper place for this topic. |

You said old school, so how could anything else win? The battle system is practically text based
Also terranigma is at chrono trigger level, but only europe got it. So sad. If you haven't played it, you've been missing out on one of the best hidden gems ever made.

Oh snap, Crystalis is even more oldschool I'll give you that. And in a lot of ways terranigma took a lot from that game. |

Legend of Dragoon was one of the best RPG's I've played. Also, loved FF Games, all of them including 10 and under. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is also an amazing RPG and I bet it can prove SoTa wrong. |

Earthbound is a classic! The only "oldschool" rpg, that was basically text-based that I could stand to play. Awesome game. |

3! The DNA system in that game was awesome. Also just the whole plot and world was fantasic. I loved how there weren't random battle areas, you fought where you got into a random encounter, no random empty field BS. |

Probably going to re-download FF9 8 7 with Tactics, Suikoden, and a personal favorite - Xenogears.
Oh and Grandia! <3

Don't forget to give Terranigma a shot. You might have played the other two games in the series without knowing this one was out there. ActRaiser and Soul Blazer, this is the 3d game in the series.
Also the lesser known secert of mana 3 is worth every old school RPG fans time as well. |

I got a copy of Star Ocean 2 for the PS1 - it's two disks, fantastic RPG *Better on PSP* Got it for a trade for 2 sports games.
A week later a family brings in some friends when I was gone for a few weeks - I return to it stolen before I could even clear the first disk. FML.

... But then they came out with the second one with new character models and revamped battle system and it got bad. Still trying to clear it *It has areas where if you make a mistake - START OVER FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE GAME*
Still - even with the crappier models and worse battle system the story is still there. So I trudge on!
EDIT: and let's not forget about the Persona series. I want Persona V so badly. |

I'd say the little touches old ps1 rpgs had made them more fun as well. The mini games in FF7, the beer drinking game in Chorono trigger, Zenogear has those robot battles that layed out like a fighter game instead of turn based combat.
Something about newer rpgs strikes me as less willing to throw in crazy part parts.
Oh yeah, FF7 even had an RTS battle. Just one of them. That kind of stuff is awesome and I miss it : ( |
