I've been playing Dust since August on a 20" CRT TV, and I think I'm pretty decent skill wise. I just recently bought a 42" LED TV and my gameplay is atrocious when I'm playing on it. But if I go back to my 20", I'm back playing good again. I don't know why its affecting me.
Anyone else run into this, and if so any solutions? Could it be the size of the TV affecting my play, meaning I should go for maybe a 22-24" LCD monitor? |

Ha ha, I remember this problem when I switched. Here's what I was told (might be true, might not). Because many TV's use things like "true motion" to generate smoother playback, it has processing time. So when playing a game, you experience visual lag. Meaning what you're seeing has already happened.
Solution 1, play on a CRT.
Solution 2, Some companies have a video mode called "video games" that turns off all graphic buffs, stripping the TV's processing time down to allow quicker response.
To test, try moving your control stick, and wait to see how long it takes for you to see a response. On many HD TV's there's significant lag. Now plug it into the CRT, and you'll see a difference.
You can also check to see if there's newer firmware for the TV, sometimes it improves the performance.
EDIT: As mentioned above, use an HDMI, if you're using component, the TV has to also upres the image SIGNIFICANTLY delaying what you see. |

Yeah, I'm running it w/ HDMI...the problem is the game seems a lot more "jerkier" when playing on the HDTV. When I'm playing, the TV is in Game mode to make it as lagless as possible, and I've tried different resolutions but no dice. |

Now u upgraded to a 250cc motobike but ur uneasy and out of place. The bike is heavyer has more power and leaves u feeling like ur riding a camel backwards.

Damn, I was going to say to set it to game mode, but it looks like you're having some other difficulties or idk, maybe its just the TV itself.
I went from a "brain TV" to a 42" LCD TV. I'm not good with tvs at all, but maybe the LED has something to do with it? I don't even really know the difference but when i was looking for a gaming TV, they said LCD over LED. I also remember it having to be 1080p and not 720p
Sorry, I'm not sure if this helps you at all or if I'm just looking dumb. just trying to help |

Check in your PS3's settings to make sure everything is fine for your TV. Mess around a bit. Also, does the same thing happen with other games? If yes, just get used to it.
I strongly suggest changing a few video settings and seeing if it helps. HDMI might even be a problem. |

Was the tv cheap(ish)?
what is the on-screen-delay (or whatever that's called)?
If it's over 5ms the tv is poor for fps games.
5ms or under is what you want. My monitors are 2ms. |

I haven't notice any difference in any other games I play. I play a lot of fighters which, those of you know, are frame-specific games. And there's no drop off in my play with those games. But yeah, I'll continue to mess around with the settings, and may try using composite instead of the hdmi. |

Try using a smaller hdmi computer monitor for comparison I agree with nova anything larger may seem better but you're straining your eyes going from corner to corner. I much more prefer to play on my Sony 24 in 3d monitor than my 42 in tv I use in the living room. |

I don't know, 32-42" are generally fine with FPS games. They're not the best, but with an HDMI it should be fine. |

i could be wrong but i seem to remember plasma actually have the best response times but are prone to burn in so have to really be careful using those for gaming |

I was told to reduce the sharpness, and it does seem a little bit better.
Edit: Actually after looking at the Game mode, a lot of the advanced stuff was still set to on. I've turned those off as well and there is an improvement. I played a game, still not as good as I was on the CRT, but a helluva lot better than my previous games on the HDTV.
I think I may just try to find a LCD monitor like I had back in the day. I believe it had a 2ms response time. |

ouch ya the standard for gaming is really 5ms or better, the response time plus your ping plus the time it takes you to actually react are all a huge factor
[EDIT] somehow missed your replay when i asked for the brand, ya my friend has an Insignia and they are a bit rough for gaming, someone told me that are actually made by Samsung but i really dont know |

Just adjust
Beware: this period of adjustment can lead to temporarily sucking. Also try to avoid playing dust on any TVs other than your gaming TV of choice, or else people will assume you've always sucked. |

It may be your viewing distance. With your monitor you sit so that you see everything on the screen. With a TV you usually sit so that it is immersive. You sit so that the TV is bigger then your vision, so your peripheral vision is parts of the screen not the wall. So its like you're in the scene. That's doesn't work for fps games you don't want to turn your head to see the guy on the far sides of the tv. You want to be able to scan the entire screen with your eyes and not your neck. As you can imagine, your eyes move significantly faster then your neck.
Tldr maybe sit further away a little. Or closer if you're squinting. Try that.

6.5ms response time is nothing. I have a 6 year old Samsung 32" LCD with 8ms response time and it works just fine for FPS online games. It may not have the smoothest movement in terms of looks, but the miniscule delay is a non-factor. I don't even think the human eye can detect any difference between 1ms and 10ms.
The amount of lag you have via your network connection trumps anything the TV has, likely by at least 10 fold.
Just think about how fast a millisecond is, it is one-thousandth of a second. A human eye blink is about 300-400ms on average. Heck, the amount of time it takes for the wireless signal from my computer to reach my router is between 1-2ms, but for all intents and purposes... it is instant.
As others have said, not only is the TV bigger but the technology is different as well (pretty big difference between how a CRT looks vs a LCD). It's just something you have to get used to. Try sitting further away (or closer), and search the net for picture calibration settings for your specific model (AVS forum is a good start).
EDIT: Also yes, any picture enhancements, such as 120hz smooth-picture-soap-opera stuff, turn off. |

HDTV's have a long response time while CRTV's have 0.
For shooters it's not really a huge issue issue as it's to get used to the more you play on it.
Fighting games is where an Issue like this really comes into play. I still play on a CRHDTV aka. A big fat box for this sole reason. |

IMO and experience, Screen Size / Resolution affects Controller / Mouse sensitivity.
I've switched between 20" and 32-40" regularly and I had to keep adjusting my sensitivity until my jerk response is the way I like it. |

I think Plasma's have 0ms response time as well, but burn in potential on a video game (with HUD stuff always in one spot) is a concern. |

Get use to what...lag?
Like what has already been said turn on game mode if your TV has it. Otherwise welcome to the new world order. You could also hook your PS3 up to a monitor like others have stated. They generally have much better response times than HDTV s
As an FYI...the 2ms 5ms 6.5ms quoted times are usually total BS. I have seen plenty of real world testing of this and although they give a general guide on what is better and what is worse there is a huge amount of variability so a TV that says its 2ms could actually be slower than one that is 6.5ms. HDTVs on the high end usually introduce a frame of lag roughly 15ms(real world) or a bit more ones that don't do processing quickly can be much worse at 3 or 4 frames of lag. |
