*This has to have been suggested before so apologies if it's your idea.
Does exactly what it says on the tin, a logi pulls out a small nano-hive like device, he looks in the direction he wants it to be facing (a green transparent active version should appear to say it's a valid place to place the device down, red if the placement is invalid.) He throws it down and after 3 - 5 seconds a hexagonal shielded cover appears, just like the texture when a drop suit shield is hit.
The shield could take heavy fire and grenades and will change from light blue (full health) and then start to change to an amber colour (mid health) to red (low health) and the deactivates like the holograms in star wars where the hologram fans and then closes and then goes back into the device.
This would really benefit players for those maps with open flat areas and can be used as a tactic such as making a perimeter or a barricade or choke point.

Like this idea. I wonder what the 'installations' to call in will be, and if something like barriers and such will be a part of that? This shield idea would be pretty useful though, and not overpowered at all. |

The idea is nice. How much HP shall be with full shield? 1000, 2000, more, less? |

5,000? I like that hahaha. Maybe you could have the choice for it to be permanently there or not. If you chose permanent, then it would have more health. |

Well I was thinking there would be better versions of the deployable shield just like everything else in the game, standard, advanced, prototype etc, each with 2 variants with different characteristics.
For example:
The DX-59 Deployable Shield has more HP, but takes longer to deploy.
The OMFG-320 Deployable Shield has a much faster deployment time but has less shield HP. |

2,000 - 5000 might be a bit excessive. Should it really have the shield strength of a HAV? If it's a small deploy-able device probably not. Maybe the larger installations. But if we're talking equipment size max of 1,000. It would allow you to use it for cover for short time and prevent some at range taking you out instantly, but has limits.
Also BF 2142 has a similar item but I never found it very useful. It was to small and would only cover you if you went prone. Sometimes you could use it as sorta barricade in hallways. |

Some different options:
1) Single item, that projects a simple shield with a given strength, up to 1 meter high - good for blocking a passage, protecting a user 2) Daisy-chain'able items, where 2 or more pieces, no more than e.g. 2 meters apart, will work together to form a shield - allows building a wall or fortify a position 3) Horizontal shield, a variation on #1 - allow crossing pits/trenches, protect against fire from below
Option: When shield is low on HP, allow some shots to pass through, quantity relative to shield-strength. |

This is always a good idea.
I kind of feel like dust lacks defensive capabilities. Everything is focused on attacking. Roaming squads etc. I would love to see more deploy-ables such as shields. |

Things to keep in mind:
Point defense - How many shields would it take for you to get pissed off with them? What prevents people from spamming them as obstacles? How quickly would you get angry at someone throwing em down before hacking a point?
Spawns - Your response if someone put one by a spawn area to farm spawn easier?
Snipers - This makes previous sniper sights on locations voided unless they can take them out.
Flux grenades - Does it make them a requirement on a fit?
Lasers - does this make them required in a group?
Camping - How much less will you like heavies who get a friend to place them to camp areas easier and keep cover (most heavies I've seen die from lack of available cover)
Personally I'd prefer to see a more "mobile cover" option but as an Installation call in style, not tossed, maybe earned in personal WP (this also plays in with support gaining massive WP for doing their job). |

Love this idea, this game already reminds me so much of BF2142 and that's a damn good thing!
Portable shields would be nice, just make them take some damage from explosives and rockets. |

I like the idea also possible that is stops berriers from passing through the shield (use it to create choke points and to defend positions ) obviously explotable as place large amounts of them around the letter to stop hackers but could do what they have done with spawns where only a limited number can be active at once or easier to do in lore perspective (why wud you explain cant place multiple shields) simple have two shields can not be in a set distance of each other and if they are to close the second one to be placed fails. |

Nice Idea. I think HP should be between 1500-3000. All that HP will be able to stop ALOT of Assault Rifle fire. |

I Had a similar idea awhile ago during the early closed beta. My idea is that there would be two types of shields:
Projecting shield barrier- a see-through barrier that covered a area 5 meters wide and 1 meter tall. It has a higher usual damage resistance to explosive damage. Although you couldn't shoot through it on both sides, you can walk through it. Has 1,000-2,000 shield HP.
Delpoyable 160mm armor barrier- a heavy box containing nanites that are programed to, once released from the box, to build a Wall 6 meters wide, and 2 meters tall. It has a higher than usual damage resistance to lasers. Ladders are also but in to climb over it. Has from 2,000-3,000 armor HP.
Also, both has a weakpoint somewhere semi noticeable if you look for it to take them out faster, and they can be locked on by AV weapons.

I don't particularly like the idea of using them as 'barricades' and such. I think the shields should allow any player and vehicle to walk through them but not allow ammunition to pass through them.
Getting stuck behind one would just get annoying (imo) but using them for cover from bullets is great. It would also help against snipers, using it to gain cover from a known sniper while trying to hack an objective, etc. |

This is one of those ideas that I love in theory, but would end up being taken advantage of in practice. As Rynx pointed out there's several things to consider that would make people loathe a deployable shield, and it's very possible that it would be implemented with the best intentions, but would quickly end up being a snipers best friend or make a heavy/logi combo that much harder to beat.
This is something I'd like to see in practice to help squad leaders eye the map and set objectives with some added piece of mind they won't get sniped as soon as they open the map up, or as a last resort that can be thrown down to give the defender a slight advantage against the element of surprise.
It should have limited shields and maybe even a timer, as well as requiring a reasonable skill/isk investment. A timer would help prevent abuse by snipers and campers.
It shouldn't be an impenetrable deployable bunker that someone lays down and it lets them take out an entire squad without a scratch.

+1 to the idea thinking maybe a bubble shield that had a specific number of health would be up to anti vehicle weapons mainly to destroy them flux grenades would be good. like? |
