Just wanted to open a Mass Driver discussion to the beta players and see what everyone is running with, how they are using them and what skills are being used to give additional boosts.
Since the new update to Dust 514, I have been running almost exclusively the Mass Driver. As an Ex-Team Fortress 2 Demoman I find the weapon to be fun and brutal all at the same time. Every once in a while I do Remote Explosive with my MD to give it the Demoman final touch.
I got 4 emails yesterday after playing asking for MD loadouts and tips, so here you guys go.
Current Loadouts (10 Versions of MD loadouts)
Primary - Assault B Series suit -Cyclone Exo Mass Driver - Toxin or Assault SMG - 2 High Shield Extenders - 1 10% damage mod-Militia armor repair and CPU module. - Nanohive (almost a must have with MD) Flux or AV grenades (depends on map and amount of LAV's on the field) - Sharpshooter lvl 5 Sharpshooter Prof lvl 3- Mass Driver lvl 5 and Prof lvl 2
I have run with 2 Damage mods in the past but with current amount of players in Proto the 2nd damage mod is having little success vs running with 2 Shield Extenders to stay alive longer.
Flux grenades are your BEST Friend. Large group of enemies Flux into group followed up by 1-2 MD shots in middle for splash damage. See a Proto Suit on the field, Flux grenade and all of those lovely shields are gone and 1 maybe two shots will kill target.
Tips for Mass Driver Players - (will add to section if suggested) Find high ground - Shots are easier and give better splash from higher vantage point. The Higher you go up, the more you adjust your ballistics for longer shots. This takes into effect the curve going down to the target. 1 Flux grenade on LAVS followed up by 1-2 MD shots kills all LAV's. Don't work solo, work in tandem with other type of weapons. MD and Laser are great, so is AR/MD or MD/MHG. Splash Damage off objects to get kills. You can fire against a wall and still get splash damage, this helps when targets are hiding to recover EHP.
What is everyone else running? What suggestions would you add?
Please keep this thread about the topic and nothing about nerfing or tweaking the Mass Driver. |

Hey Forlorn! Just opening up a new discussion thread to see different MD loadouts and ideas.
I believe you and Zion Shad have both had a taste of my MD grenades :) |

Great stuff, I think flux grenades and high ground are the most important tips.
I used to run all the damage mods and expensive shield extenders but I die to much lol. The tsunami does a pretty good job at half the cost of the cyclone. I don't personally find the cyclone to be worth the extra isk. |

Im using the AUR bought version vs the ISK and I find its working out pretty good.
The Cyclone Exo-5 AUR bought vs Proto MD's is kinda lame. No real change in stats, the Core is ok to use but you have to be spot on the target and not work with splash damage.
I want different types of MD, maybe ones that fire Flux grenades or fires 3 grenades, show some variation in styles of MD.
Whats your thoughts on Proto MD and different types? |

I'm pretty fond of the Assault Mass Driver for smaller maps. Flux grenades are much more important but the larger splash radius throws of the aim of enemies enough that you can dump a lot of shells and run. |

All the standard ones suck. The first really useful MD is the tsunami, then moved up to the cyclone. So I've really only used the AUR MDs
I think a cool idea for a proto would be one that can fire either flux or standard rounds. Give it a 6 round mag that fires 3 flux and 3 standard grenades. Give it the same reload time but give it a 2 second switch over time from grenade types. |

I like that idea, heck any variation of what we have now would be cool.
How far have you taken your skills in MD? Do you use the Light Sharpshooter Skill, what other skills are you going into?

I have the SP for beyond standard, but the straight up Mass Driver is very effective. My suit is Assault Type II, secret modules.
I usually use it on Ashland, where there is lots of cover, lots of CQC, lots of mob battles. I manage to clean out a lot of clocks. |

You're going to have a hard time getting kills with it due to low damage but you're going to get tons of assists. I use it a lot with a full squad of corpmates. My KDR might not go up much but I'll keep them alive and an orbital is almost a given. But if you can hit a big group with a flux grenade those 8 shells in the clip are going to kill a lot of red dots that will have a hard time shooting back at you. |

How is Logi suit with MD, what are the benefits to running a B series Assault vs a B series Logi suit. Do you get more armor, shields, PG/CPU, equipment slots? What do you lose compared to an Assault suit?

Exo 5 MD ISK version tier III
Two enhanced shield extenders, 2 armor plates
Flux nades, rep tool, hive, and injector is my std set, however lately been using RE's but that creates issues not having both inj and rep tool for my squad since forgoing hive is a nonstarter. Im thinking about testing PE's so i can set and forget and then get to a supply depot and switch to my hive/inj/rep suit and still have objectives protected without having to set off the RE.
Now at range i try to find elevation to push people into cover so my teammates can "cleanup"
When i want to do the killing i try to use to get into alleys and corridors where people cant escape easily and surprise them with a flux nade and then come out of cover and start dropping MD fire on them, the key to success however is knowing how to hit the floor behind them or hitting shots off objects behind them to protect you from damage
I also find bunny hopping in close quarters keeps me from getting hurt too much by splash damage, its also a good way to avoid or at least mitigate the splash damage you incur from MD fire similar to nades.
Also the key is to learn the distance and how to lead your shots, in CQC i will often strafe one direction but place my shots in the opposite direction since most ppl instinctively strage away from you to try to create distance, one shot in that direction almost guarantees they change the direction so i try to anticipate that so i can setup a direct hit. but with flux and that setup above its enough to kill in 2 well placed shots 4-5 if your just spraying. |

+1 for the reply, Good info.
So Logi suit question, how much total Shields and armor are you running with on what type of suit do you have? I may have to go Logi next time just for the added equipment slots. Ill do some more research on the subject, but I think you changed my mind on what suit to get next time we reset.

It has a base 125 shieid that i have increased to 137 from 2 levels of shield control with shield boost at 4 which is a prereq for shield control it regen fast. Now with two enhanced mods that takes it to 180ish, two basic armor takes my armor to 305 with a few levels of field mech.
Since i use the logi bpo it has 2 high power 2 low power, and 3 equipment slots, all logi suits have one L weapon slot. I havent speced into higher logi suits since the next tier gives you a 2 equipment suit that is faster in movement speed and stamina.
Logis are very squishy but if you have good FPS skills you can survive most 1v1 encounters, i use MD and AR. The logi is automatically specced into SMG to start but i stopped speccing into them because its not worth it compared to AR and MD. LR is nice but not really suited for the kind of close range support a logi needs to provide(rep, inj, hive) The SMG when really built is worthwhile but for best results focus on MD and AR for the first month and then move into SMG because it wont be worthwhile until you get weaponry up, sidearm SS up(SMG are sidearms) and SMG op/pro up, but you can get immediate results with ARs and MDs at a much lower level of SP allocation in those skills.
There are a lot of good bost here on building a logi,
https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=43208&find=unread
this is a good one to start with, though i disagree with some of the skills or would optimize other things first before going all out in some of those skills, but taking all of them to at least 3 and gradually going to 4 and 5 for them over the next few months is much better way to go.
Also i recommend everyone buy AUR and get at least all the BPO equipment and BPO suit so that you dont have to worry about ISK in the beginning and use that ISK for the skill books you will need to buy. ALL in all it shouldnt cost more than 7000-7500 AUR with 6800 of that going to the BPO suit. |

GO to the marketplace and look at the suits yourself in the class you are interested in. It would be way too large a wall of text for me to explain the differences. Actually it isnt
There are no variants like assault class that gives increased shield at the cost of armor, they are all 125 shield and i think 105 armor as a base(not sure about the armor).
The main difference is that the 2 varaints differ in equipments slots Tier I give 3 slots at the cost of movement speed and stamina The other varaints have 2 slots but give you more stamina and speed. So you'll move either like a slightly faster heavy or a slightly slower assualt depending on which way you go. As far as modules they are i believe they are the same from tier to tier b/w assualt class and logi class, 2 and 2 and then 3 and 3 i think.
Like i said check the marketplace and you'll be able to see for sure. Just press triangle and look at the stats to see what they all give.
Oh logi have tons of CPU/PG thats why they can stack some really ridiculous things together like dmg mods at lower levels of dropsuit fittings. Its all about which types of modules you use that can really extend the life out of your low end gear. |

I dont see anything wrong here. At close range the MD is a noob tube that fires off "nades" but if you arent careful and mindful of your surroundings it will kill you like all "noob" tubes.
However where a skilled MD user and a nonskilled MD user is evident is at range. Sure you can do damage but getting kills takes skill even more so than AR since you have to manage both distance and direction and lead your aim to a moving target in a way AR and yes even Snipers don't have to in this game. So if a person is racking up kills at range with an MD on the regular either they are skilled, leeching kills from others, or the reddots are extremely dumb.
Skill with a MD really shines in the hands of ppl who can land DIRECT hits consistently or the ever elusive direct headshot. Also skill in close quarter shines when a player manages their clip properly, too many MD scrubs just fire at will and if they dont get the kill in the first 4 shots those last 2 arent going to help because they will miss those as well. |

A weapon shooting nades (M320) has been called a noobtube for years now, so I don't know what makes you think you're special. You use something shooting nades that explode on impact...sounds awful lot like a M320 but semi auto.
If you feel like a noob then fine, if you don't, then fine. You are what you perceive yourself to be.
Telling me "f*ck" and all... you mad over something sir?
The best part of my day is Headshot from a mile away one shot killing my target. Nothing in this game is like it. |

I run two logi fits with MD(only run the MD unless I am so broke the I go free with Exile).
My first is my real cheap.
Sever BPO
Highs - 1 complex 1 enhanced shield mods Lows - Enhanced armor plate and militia armor rep(not enough basic to go enhanced but militia fits so to save money militia it is). Weapon - Exo 5 MD Equipment -Militia Nanite injector, triage rep gun, and Gauged nanohives Nades - flux nades
Advanced suit - A series( I don't run the B because I am a main logi and need the hives for my own ammo)
Highs - 3 Complex shield mods Low - Enhanced armor plates, Comlex shield restorer faster mod, enhanced armor rep Weapon - Exo 5 Equipment - Kin12 nanite Injector, Triage rep gun, and Gauged nanohives Grenades - Advanced flux nades
My skills are MD LV 5, MD Pro LV 2, Light weapon capacity LV 2, Rapid reload LV 2, Sharpshooter LV 2(did this early and really don't think it is needed for the MD for how close the encounters are right now. I can hit from Bravo to Delta on the 5 point map right now).
The only advise I have is not only fight from the high ground as this is universal for an encounter all around, but almost never fight up hill at least try to gain a level battlefield. I have been using the MD for over 3 months and still have not found the angles that you need to fight up hill really well I am better now with it, but you are at a serious disadvantage that is most of the time not able to be over come. |

Forge Gun to the FaceGäó There's nothing else like it for me. Even sweeter when it's a protobear. |

Yea man sounds good.
I wanted to run something by you. You run an assault right now so you might want to look into the type II or the B series. It is amazing you are faster than an assault type I and have more stamina than both scouts suits. The reason I don't use it is because I need all three of my equipment slots, but if you can get to these suits first it might work better for you. Since all you lose form an assault to a type II is HP and a sidearm(which is over rated anyway lol), but gain speed and stamina and a ton of CPU/PG. Just something I figured you might want to test.
Edit: So I went into this thread because it said MD and that is all I use and it was by DP. I just went and read the actual name and me and my wife died laughing. |
