I wonder if they'll do an engine update some time in a future. I mean they did it with trinity and that brought several versions of enjoyable aesthetics and gripping graphics. And I'm sure carbon would bring in similar things. Unreal is nice but its getting dated. |

They went with carbon originally when they started it for PC, however decided to use Unreal and go to consoles instead. Unreal 4 is coming out so they may update it to that if it's possible. |

From what I've been told, the merc quarters uses carbon. My suspicion /hope is that when they get time to finish walking in stations we'll be able to meet capsuleers "face" to face. |

pretty sure they wouldnt run two different engines in one game... and judging by how long it takes sometimes to get the "shine" on the characters in the merc quarters and the pregame ship i'd say its all running on Unreal 3

You should read what Chris Roberts talked about as far as the limitations of that engine and large player counts. Hell, part of the reason Crysis 3 only supports 16 players is because they went so hardcore for detail that the engine can't handle too many players at once. It's scalability is also somewhat questionable. |

Also, cost and ease of use. Cry Engine 3 is pretty expensive to license for one. If it were blizzard or some other game company that can crap out millions of dollars with no issues then fine. CCP is pretty independent for one, and two their assets involve two things right now, a board game and EVE. Unlike a lot of companies they can't plop out several hundred mil. And the ease of use, Unreal is easy to use, it doesn't take super long pain in the noggin to get working. Plus from what I've seen it's stable. |

Then why not do it all in carbon when incarna is finished? It would keep stuff in house and not keep purchasing licenses. It would be great to pew pew inside the station with dust bunnies. Plus i think carbon looked really awesome for dust back in 09'. |

Carbon is more than just the 3D engine (which DUST doesn't seem to be using), it also includes stuff like networking, data structures, persistance, python script, and all the other stuff needed to build a game. |

Carbon run's like a pig when it has too much to do, look at the captains quarters in EVE or the character builder, most PC's **** themselves when if comes to making a new character if it's using similar specs to the PS3.
They moved away from Carbon because of its limitations, asking them to go back when they clearly chose Unreal over their own engine would be silly. |

Agreed, getting it to run the CQ is enough of an issue. It's a nice engine, and using it originally for PC use seemed to work out not too badly. But, the PCs they were testing it on were pretty beefy rigs. Most people will not buy the kind of rig that would have required. And using it for the PS3 would never have worked. Any PS3 trying to do with would fry. |

trinity was developed over some time. carbon can still evolve into such a state just more time is needed. I'm not saying switch back to carbon now but when its done properly. Call it another trinity expansion |

It's possible that will happen, but the thread suggestion was to move over right away. |

Chances are small, and even if they are professional game devs I doubt they'd be whining in this thread. |

As i understand it, carbon wasn't ready and would take to long to make it work.
The world of darkness team in Atlanta is still working on carbon, I think. Once the world of darkness game is out and has carbon working they may move dust to it. But that could be 5+ years, world of darkness is on back burner till dust is out, and look how long dust is taking.
PS5 dust version will probably be carbon based. |

I remember when the Carbon engine was first utilized for the Eve-side CQ. People reported seeing their graphics cards literally melt inside their computers on the first day. That and the increased hardware requirements practically rendered older hardware obsolete overnight.
But overall, Carbon is more than just an engine. It is also its own communications architecture meant to streamline the servers. |

Part of the issue was that some of the stuff they used was NVIDIA tech. In terms of some of the physics and a few other things. And the graphics weren't optimized for that so they used way more RAM built into the graphics cards then they should have which in turn made the graphics card work harder and burnt them out that way. It forced some cards to overclock themselves past what was safe. I was using a laptop at the time with a Radeon in it and that thing ran pretty hot. Didn't cook it though, I made sure to have plenty of air. But, it did make it sound like a jet engine. |
