EDIT: this was originally formulated back when we had a somewhat annoying weekly cap.
So quite a few of my friends have been incessantly nagging me about posting some of my ideas on the forum. Well, I've finally caved and this post is hopefully the first of at least a few.
So, as we have all come to realise, the skill point (sp) system is just very annoying to anyone who wants to play longer than the typical three days to hit the weekly cap. Certainly it works for people who cannot play all the time and only on specific days of the week; but overall this weekly cap promotes people to stop playing after they hit the wall.
Now way back when, we had a nice daily system that would reset at down time, only issue was people playing day after day for every hour in those days would find themselves unlocking just about everything in the first few weeks. Of course I realize the sp rate of gain was nowhere near the adjusted level it holds now.
So on to my suggestion. I propose a daily system with a cap. This cap should be adjusted so that you don't reach it right away but quick enough to get the most of three to four hours play. Now here's the unique part: if you miss a day, the amount of sp you didn't use up towards the cap is shifted to the next day essentially raising the cap on that day. So for example say the cap was 100 a day, you earn 60 on day 1 so on day 2 your cap would be 140 since you had 40 leftover from day 1. Of course the rate of gain would need to scale along with the moving cap. Final point, the moving cap will only build up to seven days before resetting to day 1. It's a general weekly cap with daily caps that build up to it basically.
I feel it gives people the great feeling of making sp everyday and also the opportunity to catch up during a week. It still offers a good disparity but because it is still basically a weekly cap the general playerbase will stay on par with each other.
EDIT: Further clarification, this idea was based on assuming the 7th day would be the same day every week. However, I realise a great way to make the 7 day adjust to someone's play would be to have cap additions time out after seven days. So on the seventh day the extra cap from day 1 would "subtract" itself. |

A quick thought, perhaps instead of it resetting after the 7th day (since it would be a set day, and the 7th and reset days could be two days someone cannot be on), it could simply cap on the 7th day, so if you do not play for 2 weeks, you still have the single week and no more, but someone who cannot play on the 6-7th day and plays the 8th (reset) day, would not be denied that SP amount. |

Good idea, crappy SP mechanics. They should of just stuck with old EVE styles of gaining Skills, but new bunnies won't understand that concept. Plus the "gained SP" is more of a power play to keep people playing the game (It also allows them to put in those boosters). I'd personally go with with an accelerated passive SP gain than the current system, but hey, call me old school. +1 for not being a scrub and presenting a worthwhile idea.
PS: CCP ALWAYS listens to its playerbase. |

Just have an all-time gradually increasing cap with diminishing returns. That way the hardcore players get to keep their edge, but new players aren't disenfranchised by an irreconcilable sp gulf.
It also means nobody gets penalised just because they weren't able to play one week. |

I like it. 3 to 4 hours a day is a long time for non hardcore players though. If you want to cover that on the weekend it's still 28 hours of gameplay to try and make up. |

This appears to be similar to my idea that I stated in another thread.
- SP gains are distibuted evenly per match so you don't experience a harsh diminishing returns. - SP Rolls over to the next pool period if its not all used. - SP can take a penalty if you don't play enough in a period of time (currently a week)
The thread can be found here. There are some detailed examples of the system and I believe that CCP is actually looking at it. \o/

Sounds like a solid idea, Laz.
Anything to keep the carrot in front of the player while not allowing no lifers to grind to their hearts content. After playing EvE for almost 2 years I've grown rather fond of the passive SP system but certainly understand it would be incredibly frustrating to the average console FPS player. |

the inherent issue with SP is the grand total.
This is a great idea to promote more active gameplay from the active player, but say for example they take the current cap, and simply divide that by 7, even allowing your idea of unacquired rolling over to the next day, it would not solve the problem, just force the player to get on every day for an hour or 2 to get their cap, or even a marathon session toward the end of the week to get it all.
I DO like a daily cap over a weekly cap, however the actual # has to be tweaked. the roughly 500k SP per week we get is simply not enough, and the fact that we can get that in less than 10 hours of actual gameplay makes for a lot of downtime.
It really is just some simple math that the devs could resolve this issue, and make the mob happy
If I had to give a # I would say 100k per day with rollover and the slate is wiped at maintenance on day X. being the same every week |

-1, though this is a well thought plan, this only rewards casual gamers, ignoring the one's that are on to better themselves as well as their corp. This would take away alot of the competitive players from this game as they would quickly move onto other shooters. Without competitiveness in any shooter (including a MMORPG 1st person) the game simply will not last.
I do think gamers that simply do not have the time to play none stop do need something to help catch up a little. In WoW, for example, allows characters that take breaks to receive an exp bonus multiplier for a period of time determined by how long they have not not played (with a built in cap). I think a system like this allows reward for all gamer play styles. The grinders can grind, and those that can't have a little help to catch up. |
